I did Freestyle with my last dog, a Flat-Coated Retriever. She loved it. Now we have a 12 year old Galgo Español. He -will- sit for some cheese -IF- we're on the carpet, but not on the hardwood floors - literally turns his nose up at it. I love a dog with enough personal character to tell me to go f@ck off. We're a pair of cranky, grumpy old men. But he''s still faster than any other dog in a 4 village radius here in Switzerland. And always comes back after a chase game for a chin scratch and lick on the liver-pate-tube.

What a magnificent dog! My husband & I were GIVEN a pure-bred Afghan hound about 20years ago. He was jet black with a white blaze on his chest. He had the lovliest personality-happy & friendly & stunning looking. We wld walk him along the waterfront in Wgtn NZ on a Sunday afternoon. Lots of people wld stop & say what sort of dog is that? Isnt he lovely? Children wld come up & say can I please pat your dog? He was so good with children. One day there was a little African girl sitting on a low wall along the esplanade. She only looked about 6 or 7-her hair was plaited a la corn-row. She saw our dog coming-jumped off the wall, put her arm round his neck & kissed him on the head! Didnt stop to ask-it was love at 1st sight. That dog brought us nothing but pure joy! He lived for 12 years.

That's awesome! Our dog had 3 cream-coloured sisters, 2 black & 1 brindle brother. They were all very nice-natured except for one of the blacks who was really stand-offish, as Afghans are supposed to be apparently. We were told by the breeders that they can't be trained because they're just too intelligent & they decide whether they will obey you or not. We taught our dog to shake hands & our breeders were very surprised about that. He was a total joy! 😢

I would argue that it is not really "hounds" and rather some sighthound breeds that are especially hard to train. I had a pure white Afghan Hound. This is the closest I have ever seen to her colour ever. They say they are the dumbest dogs you can get and they aren’t. They are too smart for their own good. We lived by a walkway beside our house, down the side. She loved to jump on the trampoline to look over our tall fence. One day I heard a little girl scream that we had the biggest dog in the world. Exceptional. I had two afghans, half-brothers. The breed is more cat than dog. The concept of "eager to please" is unknown to the afghan. They may shower you with kisses but never an apology. Some do love to perform. They know when the spotlight is on and they thrive on the energy. Though regal and elegant in appearance they are clowns, extremely clever thieves, and will scream blue murder if they stub a toe. That does not happen often because their grace and agility defies belief. It is uncommon to see an afghan in an obedience competition so Fabio's performance was truly something to see.

Although, unfortunate editing with the wrong score at the end! The dog/trainer Lucrezia (notice the Italian flag also) mentioned was the performance that came AFTER... Coming in 2nd because this dog (Canadian, mentioned at the start) rocketed ahead to take 1st place with a score in the 25s, whereas, up to that point, all other dogs had got 22/23s. I don't know who the final winner was, but this was a really great performance! Also to watch it live in the arena and the reaction from the audience to the camera operator (and then the studio technician choosing that shot to show) filming his wagging tail beneath the blanket was so sweet! ❤

They're NOT dumb, they're just really hard to motivate. They want to do what they want to do, and that's about it.
