Starting out the year right, I can't believe all of this was in this lot of retro goodness! In this video of Retro Deal or Dud, I picked up a Commodore 64, a Commodore 1701 Monitor, and a Commodore 1541 Floppy Drive. It also included two complete games in boxes, Red Storm Rising and Overrun! I still can't believe all of this was in this Commodore lot!

Today I am checking out my latest retro computer.
Thank YOU for joining me on another Floppy Deep Dive. I started the year off right with another Retro pickup. Today I am going to be doing another Retro Deal or Dud! I will show you everything I got in this pickup and test to ensure everything works. Then at the end, I will tell you exactly how much I paid, and you tell me in the comments, was it a Retro Deal or Dud?
First, we will look at the Commodore 1701 Monitor I added to my collection. I have 3 1702 Monitors, but this is my first 1701. What is the difference between 1701 and 1702? They are virtually identical. They have the same specs, tube, inputs, casing, and manufacturer. The only real difference is that 1701 is older (1982 to early '83, 1702 is late '83) and that 1701 shipped with a five-pin composite video cable instead of an eight-pin luma chroma cable in the box. I wish it had a door to cover the knobs, but I can purchase a 3D-printed one online to fix that issue. Let's hook a commodore 64 to this monitor and see if it works. It works perfectly and looks good.
Second I will show you the Commodore 64 I picked up in this lot. It is also filthy and has this permanent keyboard cover attached to it. A nice treat is a reset button on the side of the unit. I can see how that can be useful, so I'll test that out and see if it works. Let's hook it up to 1702 and see if we get a blue screen. It powers on ok; let's test the keyboard and see if everything is working. Uh oh, the keyboard is not working fully. Some keys I can get working again by pushing on them multiple times. This keyboard must be filthy, and cleaning would fix many of my problems. Fortunately, I have another keyboard to test to see if anything else is not working on this unit. Let's go ahead and hook up a different keyboard and give this unit another test. Yep, that fixed the problem, so all the chips are working fine. So this unit is working, and this continues to be an excellent pickup. Next, let us load up a game and see if there are any issues. That loaded up with no problems, so success! I have a working C64 unit.
Third, in this pickup is a 1541 drive. Just like all the other hardware, this drive is filthy too. Let's hook up some power to the device and connect it to the Commodore 64. I will not load up an original floppy because it might damage it. So let me grab a random floppy and give it a test. It did a directory, but it is having trouble reading the disk. I will go ahead and take the cover off and clean the head on the drive to see if that fixes the problem. Yep, the header is filthy and needs a good cleaning. Now that I cleaned it let's try to load something up again and see if it works. Yep, that fixed the problem. The drive is currently reading the floppy with no issues. Excellent, so that completes all the hardware items and works. I call that a success!
I also got two pieces of Software in the pickup. The first one is Red Storm Rising, and this game attracted me to this pickup when I saw it on the marketplace. The box looked terrific, and it had all the materials inside it. I have been working on my Microprose Collection and have not yet added Red Storm Rising.
I also got Overrun by SSI, and it also was in excellent shape and had all the manuals and inserts included in the box.
