I've heard a lot of versions of this song and plenty of songs by KD Lang BUT I've never heard her version of this song. Beautiful. Oh course, it's Leonard Cohen's song but she definitely did it justice. This is another reason why I hate autotune so much. Listen to how devastating KD Lang's slides are into those notes. How could you possibly sing a decent version of this song with autotune! What you need is skill and a fabulous voice which is what she has in abundance.

I hold a soft spot in my heart for k.d. lang. She went to high school with a friend of mine. My friend, who I didn’t know at that time, had epilepsy. She had been bullied a lot in her previous school. When she moved to Consort, Alberta, KD Lang, who is considered one of the coolest kids in the high school, took Allison under her wing. Allison said it was the first time she belonged anywhere. ❤️

As others have said, I love the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics version by her, not only is her version beautiful, but so are the visuals. As for KD’s thoughts on the meaning of the song, “To me it’s (about) the struggle between having human desire and searching for spiritual wisdom. It’s being caught between those two places.”

k d lang, who always uses lower case letters in her professional name, is a 🇨🇦 singer from Alberta, who recorded major hits in the 90s, such as Crying, and Constant Craving. This song, Hallelujah, came a decade later, when her star had faded a bit.

This version of Hallelujah was written by Leonard Cohen. kd Lang sings it the best in my humble opinion. She recorded on her Hymns from the 49th Parallel album (the 49th Parallel is the border between the US and Canada). She sang it live at the opening ceremony of the Olympic games in Vancouver Canada in 2010. You must check out that performance. She was AMAZING.

Bob Dylan was among the first to perform Cohen's song in concert with his earliest noted performance being in Montreal on 8 July 1988.[159] Other notable singers who have covered "Hallelujah" include Brandi Carlile, Regina Spektor, Willie Nelson, Susan Boyle, Tim Minchin, Myles Kennedy, and Bono. Different interpretations of the song may include different verses, out of the over 80 verses Cohen originally wrote.

You're going to put on either "Trail of Broken Hearts" or "Pullin' Back the Reins" and K.D. Lang will change your mind about Country. First time I heard both of those as a kid, you knew you were listening to a legendary voice just a couple words into the song. This cover of Leonard Cohen, or her version of Roy Orbison's "Crying" or Joni MItchell's "Help Me" are perfectly wonderful, but you really need to hear the difference when it's her own song flowing through her.

You have certainly thrilled every Canadian with this song. She sang this at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and the audience was captivated. Kathryn Dawn Lang was born in Edmonton, Alberta and raised in Consort, Alberta. One of her early influences was Patsy Cline. Her list of awards includes 4 Grammy's and 6 Juno's, officer of the Order of Canada and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. For more of her try "Constant Craving" and "Miss Chatelaine". Leonard Cohen, multi-talented, singer/songwriter, poet, novelist. Born in Westmount, a suburb of Montreal. Sadly he passed away in 2016, aged 82, buried in Montreal. A long list of awards including Grammy's and Juno's. Canadian Music Hall Of fame, Canadian Songwriter Hall of fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, companion of the Order of Canada and 2 medals from Queen Elizabeth. I am more familiar with his early songs, so I would suggest "Suzanne" and "So Long, Marianne". A later one is "Closing Time".

This piece was written by Leonard Cohen, but not as a religious hymn. You may have heard it in a church but more likely you heard a cover. It has been covered by many dozens of singers. If you want to explore Cohen a bit more listen to "So Long Marianne" or "Suzanne", two of his early pieces. Also Jennifer Warnes does a fantastic version (duet) with Cohen, of "Joan of Arc". (If you are not familiar with Joan of Arc, read about her before you listen to the song. It will mean so much more.)

I came here to talk about Leonard Cohen, the writer and original performer of this song, but James Scully and his commenters have covered that well. It has been covered by many artists over the years. One of the most emotional and popular versions was done by the late Jeff Buckley. The most listened to cover may be Rufus Wainright's version that was featured in the movie "Shrek." K.D.'s cover is up there with those. A lot of folks have reacted to the Pentatonix cover, which in my opinion is too mawkish. I really like Cohen's original a lot, but many don't as his voice is a gravelly baritone and many want the song to have that hymnal quality that it gets when sung in higher registers. Though it contains some biblical references this is most definitely not a religious song about praise, it is about human relationships and several verses refer directly to sexual acts. The repeated "Hallelujah's" are more closely related to shouts of "Oh God!" than to shouts of "Praise God!"

If you would like listen to what I consider to be kd's best live version, checkout the 2010 Logies (sort of Australia's Grammy's). For sheer emotion see the 2010 Olympic Opening it is in a 60,000+ stadium, filled primarily with athletes from around the world, and unfortunately just hours earlier an athlete, Nodar Kumaritashvili, had a fatal crash in a training accident. The lyrics seemed painfully fitting. If you can't find those try Leonard Cohen's 2008 induction into the Canadian Songwriter's Hall of fame, or the 2006 Juno awards, or the 2017 Leonard Cohen Memorial Tribute. Each is a little different, each is worth hearing.

If you want to hear her reach higher ranges on this song , listen & watch her performance at the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, may have to do this on your own, video sometimes gets blocked for reactors

Just a note here -- what you are calling the "Church" version of Hallelujah was written by Handel's Messiah and release in late 1800 (1876?). The version you are listening to was written by Leonard Cohen and released in 1984. Two completely difference and wonderful songs. Many, many, many artiest have cover Leonard's version. By the way -- I agree with others in the comments that the 2010 Olympics Opening Ceremony is, IMHO, the best version.

The version of her doing it live at the Olympics is MUCH better! Totally different.

Always here about the best female voice, Karen Carpenter, Linda Ronstadt, no argument here, but KD Lang is never mentioned in that conversation. She has one of the most beautiful, pure voices, among female singers !!
