Possibly one of the most incredible voices to ever grace us. Her Ingenue album is 🔥, she won a bunch of Grammys for it. This version is otherworldly. Simply the best. She's a Canadian girl who has done a bit of country but an overall incredible singer, and yes, try her catalog.

Leonard Cohen knew what he was talking about. If you close your eyes and listen to it with your heart, it's almost like having suburb sex. She builds you up and teases you along before a crescendo, then calms you down again. That's what I hear and I'm 80+ years old. Brings back one or two memories. ;)

You're bang on in your assessment of KD's immense talent BizMatik. There are so many wonderfully talented singers but KD is a true communicator, she brings so much emotion and interpretation to her songs like the classic chanteuses of old. As you say "the music is coming through her" and she becomes the song. KD is a Canadian and has been prominent since the mid 1980's and has recorded many excellent albums. She's also done some terrific collaborations with other singers as well, most notably Tony Bennett and she has a huge international following with many gold and platinum albums. Cheers from Ontario, Canada!

I think this was the memorial concert after he passed. Previously, kd sang it in front of Leonard when he was inducted into the Canadian Songwriter Hall of Fame. He agreed that was the definitive version of his song. To me, this is a questioning song about our imperfect humanity. And it seemed to me, she understood and interpreted that better than anyone.

Definitely k.d. lang deserves as VERY deep dive. In 1998 she sang at the closing ceremony of the Calgary Olympic games and for the most part, CLEARED the stand of athletes. She was locally known and this performance pushed her to the world stage. Her first four albums were country and western then she changed her genre. She has sang with the great Roy Orbison - Crying as well as Tony Bennett who ranks her with some of greatest singers. She sang this song at the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver Olympic Games in 2010. She has won Grammies and Junos, as well as inducted in the Canadian Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame

KD is a Canadian institution. She’s had several interesting phases to her career. The first time I saw her was at the closing ceremonies for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. She had a kind of a rockabilly cowgirl persona at the time. It was a highly entertaining night! I much prefer her later career, this is an excellent example of why she’s had such a long career.

Leonard Cohen wrote this classic song and released it first. Cohen had a long career and passed away a few years ago. His musical career spanned the late 1960s until just recently. He was a published poet before he started putting his poetry to music. It's hard to pick the 'best' Leonard Cohen version of this song but I suggest the live version sung late in Leonard's career. KD Lang sang this song for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and it has become one of her standards.

KD Lang is one of the best singers of that generation and probably before and after. I think she was highly inspired by Patsy Cline, in fact you should check out her iconic three cigarettes in an ashtray. You will be blown away. I was dating a girlfriend when KD Lang started to explode in that world and so I got to hear a lot of it and she is absolutely amazing. And then just like the Dixie Chicks in country music, she spoke out against the reasons for invading Iraq, and just like the Dixie Chicks she got excoriated. Plus it didn't help that she Champions being a vegetarian which is absolutely not feasible at that time in that world. But he's the real deal. She knows how to sing and knock it out of the park. This is actually a pulled back performance by her.

I saw her live in a small venue shortly after Ingenue was released - I will never forget any detail of that concert. I remain a big fan. Respect. She's done a ton of excellent work. I rarely listen to Hallelujah anymore by anyone other than Leonard Cohen - or K D Lang. Odd factoid - both she and Cohen are Canadian. So much emotion and so much precision in the way she handles her voice. Her voice is so warm and velvety... Leonard recorded this at many different points in his career, with his voice in different condition. He poured so much restrained emotion into his songs that sometimes the newer ones are better, even though his voice was objectively worse. You might consider asking your regular listeners to weigh in with their favorite version before you listen.

Her ballads are beyond lovely, "The Valley" being my favorite along with her version of Hallelujah, but I LOVE some of the songs where she cuts loose and has a little fun with it. "Miss Chatelaine" is a fun song with a very 90s video that plays on her butchness and femininity.

This is the performance of a lifetime for this woman. I've seen a lot, heard a lot of the songs she does, she was one of my late mom's favorite singers. I saw this after I saw the version she did at the Olympics. That one is softer than this one. I caught this one on KZbin one night as I was working on my second novel. The entire performance, from the first piano keys to the end with the long standing ovation reached down into my creative soul and pulled out an entire scene from the book. I write a vampire and angel series and this song, the first time, is in a chapter where the angels are hunting a rogue vampire that they've been trying to catch to take to Hell. One of the angels hears this song starting, Lang's voice, and just...stops. The song is then, through the series of the books, comes in and out, various lines, various situations. Never the entire song (and always with attributions in the credits), but just pieces that put the touch on things. Kd Lang is brilliant, and this version is the one I will always listen to anytime I am working, when I'm remembering my mom, or when I need to just "feel" things. Glad you did the reaction, it was fun to see your face as you also got that deep feeling.

k.d. lang is a true Canadian treasure. The Canadian Olympic Commitee wanted Leonard Cohen to sing his masterpiece at the closing ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Leonard was not able to do it and he insisted that they get k.d.. Roy Orbison had heard her sing and requested her to re-record his hi “ Crying “ as a duet with him. It was fantastic. When Roy died they held a memorial concert for him and asked k.d. to sing it for Roy. People were crying and she got a standing ovation. You should listen to it. It’s listed as k.d. lang sings “ Crying “ at Roy Orbison tribute concert.
