Magnificent moments with Somopane, Lundi, Klaserie and the rest of the herd, as they regroup during their day to once again form a protective wall around little Khanyisa, as they move through the reserve.
Adine joined them in the late afternoon, meeting up with Somopane first who had ventured ahead of the herd. While foraging, he pushed down a tree into the sand road. Foster, an elephant carer, saw it from a distance and asked him to push it out the way - which he did with absolute ease - considering the weight of the tree. Such incredible strength and intelligence.
Lundi approached from some distance away and showed quite expressive behaviour. There can be many reasons for this, and we have to take a lot of factors into consideration to try to understand it properly. We often consult with our highly experienced elephant advisors to get clarity from a 3rd party perspective.
Lundi, Khanyisa's adoptive mom, showed a powerful arrival, with her ears displayed out, secretion from her temporal glands as well as from her ears. She also urinated at the same time. So often elephant behaviour representing highly emotional reactions can be confusing to many - trying to understand if it is anger, frustration or joyful excitement.
Yolanda Pretorius, a trusted elephant advisor to HERD and JABULANI received the videos and asked questions which included:
Did anything significant happen with Lundi and the rest of the herd ahead of joining Adine and Somopane? (No)
How far along was it during their day out in the wild? (Most of the day)
Somopane and Lundi's hormonal cycles would have been a significant consideration, but as is it not part of our objectives to breed with the herd, they are on contraception that inhibits testosterone production in the males and prevents the cows from entering oestrus.
Was Somopane separated for some reason from Lundi earlier in the morning before heading off to the wild? (No)
Was it the first time that Lundi had seen Adine on that day? (Yes)
It was suggested in a high probability that as Adine had just arrived to join the herd, and it was the first time Lundi was seeing her that day, it was a very grand and accepting way of greeting her, and "a privilege" to be greeted like that by an elephant, as it means she was very pleased to see you.
After the rest of the herd joined, they continued with their walk. There is some beautiful lengthy footage of Klaserie walking boldly ahead of the herd, following Adine (who somehow manages to walk backwards effortlessly without falling over, and keeping her iPhone so smooth without any stabilising equipment).
Khanyisa always keeps close to Lundi as they walk, but it was lovely to see the grey wall of protection flanking her every side as they waded gracefully through the reserve.
The herd passed by the dam, some stopping for a quick refreshment before they headed back to their stables which are located in a large protected piece of land.
Khanyisa then joined Lammie in the orphanage to forage on some fresh grass before her 6 PM bottle.

What 😱?! He knows a command “push the tree out of the way”!!! Amazing! I am super impressed. That was really neat to see. It’s like he knows the herd is famous so he wanted to show out a little 😘!! (Edited) I read the description after I watched the video and my eyes started sweating (lol) when I saw that Lundi exhibited her excitement bc it was the first time to see Adine all day 🥰. How wonderful you must feel about that Adine!!!

This might sound corny, but because life in the US is so, so stressful right now, these videos have come to mean so much to me. I love feeling like I'm walking along with you and these beautiful animals. It's wonderful to have the opportunity to get to know the individuals in the herd. I'm so glad you post frequently. Thank you so much.

I love how Khanyisa becomes one of the herd when with them. Meaning that she knows that's where she belongs. That she is not a "pet" to the humans, constantly seeking human attention. A wonderful reflection on the fantastic job HERD does rehabilitating the orphans.❤

Yes! Just saw some Asian orphan elephants in a very different situation. Granted, there were too many in number to foster as Khanyisa has been, but I don't know if these babies will ever know how to negotiate in nature because of the group nursery setting they're in. Still very glad they were rescued, though. ♡♡♡

I love that there's so much elephant psychology in their movements as a herd and their interactions with the caregiver s . Lundi s reaction on seeing Adine shows how much they care too . We really can learn a lot from these gentle giants ❤️ Khanyisa ❤️ of course is keeping close to them ,protected . Maybe we learnt to be humane from them 🥰

While it's perfectly understandable that an animal raised by/around humans for most of its life would be able to understand and follow commands, it still astounds me. Of course they're extremely smart, but it seems to be a step above to tell such a magnificent creature to move the tree out of the road ... and he does it. I used to train service dogs, and it was so gratifying to see them follow commands, but it's something else to see an elephant do it.

What an impressive creature Somopane is. He so graciously pushed the tree out of the road when gently asked by Foster. Amazing how Somopane breaks the tree then moves it out of the way. Wow! He is amazing. He could not reach the leaves so common sense to break it down. He did justice by eating the leaves as it was accessible. All of them touched the stump of the tree and realized it is gone which means they knew that tree well. This video was enlightening how their days trip goes. They do obey the workers. Adine your son is part of your team is so nice. Does your other family members help also?

I'm a life-long student of human and animal behavior and I'm always captivated by the elephant's constant touching of each other with their bodies, especially with their trunks. They are true cuddle bugs -- they love physical contact with each other no matter how often it is or how casual it is. This is probably related to their ability to never step on or accidentally crush the babies in the group -- the slightest touch let's them know where a vulnerable one is. It must also be an outgrowth of elephants not being able to turn their heads around by much -- the only way for them to see what is behind them (or nearly behind them) is to turn their whole bodies around -- knowing exactly where an infant is by touch and not by seeing it with eyes.

Great footage of traveling through the bush! How can you tell them apart? I recognize Lundy by her right ear, Timisa, and Khanyisa.

Klaserie is so beautiful. Her head is so symmetrical. And Limpopo is always so inquisitive. She had to feel and smell every bit of the top of the standing tree.
