Learning from the Giants | A Study into the Personality of Elephants
We caught up with a new study with the Jabulani herd, by South African university student, Chloe Caister who is researching a very special facet of elephant life - personality, for her Masters project. The research looks into the science behind determining whether elephants have personalities. To do so, Chloe has been observing each member of the herd’s behaviour and recording her findings using certain protocols. She has finished creating a profile for each elephant, and has conducted novelty experiments, exposing the individual elephants to novelty stimuli to record their variation. Recording their reactions to different stimuli help determine and confirm our thoughts of each elephant's unique character
Here we watched as the herd reacted to numerous stuffed toys, including bears and elephants, out in the bush while they were foraging for the day. It was fascinating to watch the reactions and gain even deeper insight into the individual elephants' natures.
It was clear that while Somopane may be the peacemaker in the herd, he is still not afraid to take control of potential threats and knock them out if necessary. Limpopo was boldly curious too, kicking her toys, while Klaserie, Timisa, Pisa and Khanyisa took some time to warm up to the dolls, showing an instinctual weariness. But once confident that the animals were not threats, they all took to them with greater curiosity and thorough kicks - Khanyisa throws a few back kicks too!
Tokwe, Lundi, Jabulani and Fishanwere all happy to try a taste of the stuffed elephants and bears, before our carers asked them to stop, for their own benefit. The elephants are used to the carers' voices, as their protcetors, the way the carers are used to elephants' body language. Mambo takes a playful strut with one toy and Zindoga is sure to give a punch here and there too.
Kumbura is weary, which is typical of her sensitive and alert nature, but she doesn't give it trying to suss out the scene and eventually joins in in tossing the toys about.
Sebakwe is not overly interested, but does seem quite feisty on this outing. Bubi and Setombe also stretch out a trunk of curiosity. The carers stood close to make sure all went smoothly, and as soon as it started, it ended as the elephants found better snacks to chew on in the surrounding bush.
Chloe will be compiling a report on her overall findings which we look forward to sharing with you soon.
Chloe says, “My project aims at studying the behaviour of the Jabulani Herd, specifically them due to their unique set-up as rescued elephants. Through various behavioural experiments, we can determine their personality types and how these affect the interpersonal dynamics within the herd. The Jabulani Herd is well known for its acceptance of orphaned elephant calves. This makes them an integral part of elephant conservation in Southern Africa. By understanding their individual personalities and needs we can cater their care to best suit them as individuals and continue to enhance their quality of life and hopefully we can apply this study to other animals striving to provide quality care for rescued animals.”
Knowledge is power! It is part of our ongoing objectives to generate new research into elephants, especially in areas where a lot of scientific research is lacking, for instance in the orphan calves and their integration into a herd, as well as albinism in elephants.
Which of the elephants amazed or surprised you the most in this morning personality study?
Please note: We don’t take research students or interns frequently and also don’t accept volunteers or visitors to the orphanage, for the wellbeing of the elephants. This is also to limit foot traffic, maintain hygiene standards and to prevent orphans from bonding with outsiders.

They sacrifice a lot to help those animals, but they are so passionate about it. Adine knew they needed to raise the orphans next the the herd so she built that orphanage, the older orphans seem to know the little ones will be coming to the herd. It’s lovely to see human helping elephants, and elephants helping the humans to help those orphans. Such a beautiful situation Adine and the carers have made. They are blessed, but they are dedicated to the cause!! When you see the HERD take in a baby, provide comfort and protection, and then greet them the next day with excitement, it’s so beautiful. The wild elephants who have been mothers, are so great. It’s like the elephants are the ones who built the HERD, because they are so dedicated to the cause as well.

This was very interesting to watch. What amazed me the most was the level of trust and communication between the elephants and the humans. Each time the elephants were told to leave it they immediately did so! When taking our puppy to Dog Behavior school those were the 2 words we were taught to use when she would attempt to put something in her mouth she should not have in her mouth! A pill, or something poisonous or harmful. 11 years later it still works! What a wonderful relationship you have with the herd. How blessed you each are to have that as a part of your everyday lives! Much gratitude to you for bringing these wondrous creatures into my life. 🙏

In my NON-expert, humorous, opinion, when you first set the toys out and the elephants were huddled together, the elephants were questioning if this was a joke😂. They thought they may be getting new snacks. What the heck!! It is soft but not at all tasty... 😂❤❤ It is amazing that these large animals know to be cautious, in life and may be stressed by something so small. They don't take much for granted. Brilliant.

The Ellies live in a world where a harmless twig may turn out to be a cruel deadly snare. They're right to be cautious! Frankly the toys made me nervous because they reminded me the Russian army during their disastrous invasion of Afghanistan (1980s) used to put toys by landmines as bait for children.

On the whole, the Herd has reacted according to what best characterized them as invidual Tokwe, Setombe, Lundi after the discovery making the circle around the babies Jambulani, Somopane near Bubi and Fishan after a quick interest it was treated with contempt (on the outside) Limpopo with interest, Kumbura protecting Miss Sunshine, Timisa inquisitive but with caution, Zindoga scornfully "not even scared" So interesting indeed as each and every video !

Some are using the stuffed bears as like a sponge or something to wipe their skin or throw dirt on their skin. The toy has a practical use. Other ellies are using it as a toy to toss around, put on their heads or backs to play and provide amusement while others try to put it in their mouths to taste until Adine sternly calls out a "Leave it." And some kick the toy around as if to say they have no use. Seems like little Khanyisa doesn't care for the toys. She would much rather graze and use her bush time more wisely. In the end, the toy provided some mental, physical, and emotional stimulation depending on how each elephant chose to use it.

Wow ; very interesting experiment . Over all I feel that most or if not all of the elephants ended up trying to eat the stuffed toy and then tossing them aside maybe twice ! I think your right ,each had their own reaction to the new invader and their personalities emerged. Jabulani had me in stitches places the toy several times on his forehead, it was as if he felt comfort or somehow the " material felt good. I say this because my daughter used to put a sock or stuffed toy over her forehead to sleep ,I guess it was her comfort; that is what Jabulani reminded me of. Most of the toys were tossed aside: no purpose, can't eat ,but Timisa, Khanyisa being a little younger showed bravery and still timid about this new thing in their browsing area I was deeply touched by Kumbura almost running to Khanyisa when khanyisa had this stranded invader on her back and was starting to showing signs of stress .Kumbura showed a very protective side ,very sweet! I think the experiment did show their own personalities! overall elephants just felt if I can stomp it ,can't eat it !doesn't hurt us ,eh toss it aside!! Hee hee Well done! On last note ,me being a worry wort I was very worried about them swallowing the toys as many animals do!I do know you had carerers watching but I would have been a nervous wreck 😂 Elephants are to smart notbto put all the way in mouth though ; each feeling yuck ; no purpose , so I'll bjust toss aside, away from me!!😁🥰❤

I like how gently they investigate at first, just to make sure they arent living and accidentally crush them. Then, like children, put the object in their mouth to check texture and see if its edible. Since it didnt taste poisonous the carers instructions to go no further, help them know that it is not safe to eat. Cool to watch.

Fascinating research. This is a different Chloe, master's student, right? It was interesting to see the ellies first gather. It looked as if they were asking: "so, why are we being called in to gather round this morning?"...🙂

I like when "critter cams" places different animal robots for elephants reactions in the name of research. But a big ball is always fun for them. Last night I watched PBS, "When Whales Walked" the family tree of species. Elephants was one of the tracing back to origins story. The prehistoric footprints found showing elephants migration thru euroasia brought me to tears. If you get a chance to watch it you won't be disappointed! 👍👏👏😊

I started laughing when they were tossing n then rubbing the stuffed bear on their body. They are like lil children playing n having fun but soon get tired of it and move on to the next best thing.

I betcha all the loving followers of the herd would buy those bears that have been chewed up, spit out, stepped on and tossed around by the eles! I want one 😊

Always amazes me when the big ellies start trumpeting & forming a circle protecting their youngest. They sensed something different (wild ellies, etc.) and their ‘shielding’ was on!
