Westworld Bernard Human/Host Hybrid theory

The thing that first made me think that Bernard was a hybrid was when he helped open the DNA-locked door with Charlotte. That hesitation of his, knowing he would certainly be found out, then he wasn't was a big clue that something hinky was afoot.

This is my theory too, that Ford has been trying to "resurrect" Arnold all along, and although he's been more successful than the Delos team, he's also gone through many revisions over the years (which explains the roomful of discarded Bernard hosts we've seen in some previews). The main difference -- and Ford's stroke of genius -- is that Ford has never tried to *directly* resurrect Arnold, instead he's been experimenting all this time with "Bernard" who just happens to have a very similar back story to Arnold's. Arnold created the maze to lead Dolores toward awakening; now Ford is using it to lead Bernard toward realizing that he is really Arnold. The other stroke of genius on Ford's part was to embed Bernard into normal civilian life as much as possible, as a co-worker, instead of keeping him isolated in a fishbowl. I do think Ford is also engineering his own immortality in this process, but for the moment his "mind" exists only within the host/computer network of the park. It will be Arnold's job to "return the favor" and create a host body for Ford-2 after Bernard finishes his metamorphosis.

A couple of holes in this theory - 1) Its unclear if its Bernard time slipping to Arnold's memories, or if its Delores remembering her past, which Dolores Remembering is a major story element in Season 2. 2) How were Arnold's memories captured? He was killed 35 years ago, 5 years before Delos invested in the park. 3) We can also rule out freezing Arnold's brain because, because Wyatt put a hole in it. 4) Peter Abernathy also had the twitch

I believe this theory. It goes with Charlotte finding multiple bernards in the trailer. Ford did not perfect the hybrid code and bernard still deteriorating every two to three months. And with bernards injuries it makes sense that he would need a new body sooner. Fords handshake and farewell to bernard is the “on” switch. To beenards new narrative. Like the “violent delights” saying.

The overarching theme of this show is: Life is a precious thing and when we belittle it in any way, we ring in our own destruction. Furthermore, Ford and Bernard are two different beings. His backstory is Co-op'd from Arnold, but they are different. This is shown visually by them dressing differently. A little more Ford. So Bernard is based on Arnold by way of Ford. The host's also have backstories and those are necessary, but their journey (which is Bernard's journey) is to evolve past their programming. Bernard's story arc is him coming into his own unique being, not as a vessel for some plan people imagined Ford was up to. Ford wasn't keen on humans toward the end of his life, and saw our end coming soon. The quote you chose misses the clincher; "we're done". Like the Neanderthals before us. We are but a mistake towards something better. That all being said, it would also belittle Arnold & Ford's sacrifices to just bring them back from a thematic standpoint. Ford is dead. The code he left behind is not him. It's merely a guide for William's narrative. Bernard was simply a means to help Ford, but also to satiate his loneliness, guilt & grief. EDIT: I really enjoy your videos and have nothing, but respect. The great thing about works like this, is that they give us a chance to reflect on important & intrinsic aspects of us. Whether anyone is right or not, is kind of irrelevant. And I will say that you get this show a lot more than some other channels. Love your channel & can't wait to see more.

I totally buy this. Ford said that basically time and suffering are the way to achieve consciousness, and Bernard is going through both. It's also the only explanation for the lack of glasses after he wakes up.

Completely agree, as we had the same theory/thoughts. Very well explained though. At the moment I think this is very likely. It is the most logical thing and there is lots of foreshadowing („is there anything of him left in you?“). Also Bernard left one drone host alive, because he couldn’t change his own controllunit by himself, he would need someone else to do it for him. I had that Arnold-Bernard consciousness transfer theory already after the pilot of S2. Main reason was that Arnold memory in the flashback that just shouldn’t have been there. But back then we didn’t know that it is possible, like we do now after the James Delos experiment, so no one really believed me on reddit, and I wasn’t fully convinced either. But now I am quite convinced, like I was that Grace is Emily Grace. The main theory will probably be bringing Ford back, but I can’t see that happening. And really... the last thing I want to see is William getting or having a host body and becoming a hybrid.

I think the reason Delos failed to upload a human mind into a host is because the host itself needs to attain self-awareness independently before a human mind can be mapped onto it. The AI needs to accept reality first because a human mind will reject it when perceiving the world from within an artificial body. So Ford sends Bernard through the maze to become sapient and self-aware through suffering by making his cornerstone memory the death of his son similar to Mave. And then forcing him to kill his lover and then relive the experience. After Bernard the AI becomes sapient and is able to accept reality Ford is able to upload both the Bernard and Arnold 'software' into the stolen Delos hardware and then install it in the Bernard host. Ford uses Delores first as a foil for Bernard to follow and then as a decoy for Delos to give Bernard and Arnold time to integrate. The chaos of the robot uprising is a good distraction for Delos. But more importantly it's a backdrop rife with suffering and the human condition in conflict with itself: the perfect environment for this third individual 'BernArnold' to go through the maze and emerge as a fully integrated self-aware human/robot hybrid.

In my perception there are only two people Ford would have wanted to make a control unit for - either one of Ford's own mind or for the man that he once worked with and now continuing the work of for the last three decades. It only makes sense to me that he go that route.

Say, my understanding of the drone hosts were they were outside of the control of Ford/staff at the Mesa, but rather controlled directly by Delos. So, Bernard, acting on behalf of Ford, was able to control with a simple voice command the Delos drone hosts? Or, am I missing something?

Great video! Maybe Fords game is about leading William to Arnold/Bernard. I mean, in the first season the discussion between Ford and MIB “if you’re looking for the moral of the story, you need only ask,”... “I’d need a shovel, the man I’d be asking died years ago” leads me to believe Ford is leading the MIB to the moral of Fords new story, which is the evolution of a new being... the first human host hybrid, Bernarnold (the person the MIB wanted to ask to begin with). Ford is giving William what he wants, which is Arnold. Then William can see that his vision when he was younger, to create immortality, came true. One true thing. Or not. You never know with this show. So many ways to theorize and interpret.

To tie it back to season 1, I think Ford figured out immortality early on: The key to overcoming the cognitive plateau, to prevent Delos' type degradation is that the human-host hybrid has to have a cornerstone memory and its own internal conscious voice.

2 points: 1. I came to the same conclusion as you did. The 1 piece missing in James Delos successful transition of his consciousness to a robot was SUFFERING. He never suffered. Not even in his real life as he was wealthy. 2. The memories of Arnold/Bernard being in the real world in Episode 2 was Delores' memory, not Arnold's.

I thought it was interesting that Elsie mentions that Bernard rotated out then asks where he went. If Bernard was a Host/Hybrid it's possible that he still had breakdowns on occasion and Ford had Bernard rotate out for a few weeks for upgrades. What took Delos 149 attempts to push Ford could have done in a dozen due to his greater understanding of the technology he created.

Also they had to dna scan when Bernard and Charlotte went to the first secret bunker and Bernard hesitated but was granted access. What if that’s because her has Arnold’s dna. Also the suffering Arnold’s death caused Ford led him to having a breakthrough about consciousness in the hosts is what Ford was trying to recreate with his death. Also The Whole season is trying to figure out what side Bernard is on... human or host... maybe that’s because he’s on both!

In season 1 there were subtle hints about Ford plan to resurrect someone, which could be himself, Arnold and/or William (mib). The way William was dodging bullet's and his past helucinations might be a hint. In order to move forward he has to go backwards i.e. to achieve full consciousness he has to go through all his past life major events. Amanda Stone Exactly. Although my thinking was that Bernard is uploaded with Arnold sometime in the span we have not seen yet in season 2. That Bernard is only Bernard when he is breaking down and malfunctioning, but is uploaded with Bernard AND Arnold in the missing time, which is why he is no longer shaky in the present. In the trailers we see Charlotte with a room of Bernard’s (I think). I expected that it took place around then. But perhaps I’m missing something. Another possibility is that we’re not seeing one Bernard having flashbacks, we’re seeing the different and often similar experiences of multiple Bernards. Season One messed with us by seeing Delores at various points in her history, presented as a single narrative. What if in Season Two we’re seeing multiple Bernards at the same (or nearly same) point in history (after the board shootings), again presented as a single narrative. We did see a preview that had Charlotte Hale in a room of multiple Bernards. I could see her booting them up, screwing with their memories, putting them in various situations, and trying to get clues about what was happening with the uprising and with Abernathy. If The Cradle is some virtual reality Matrix-like testing ground we may even be seeing some experiences that are happening in cyberspace.

I also think the fugue state of mind Bernard is done on purpose and is how Ford makes the human mind accept the host body. The big reveal this season is going to be that Bernard waking up on the beach is actually Arnold, not Bernard, or Bernarnold.

Another clue is Bernard says that the new clones are using completely different code then he turns around and triggers them. He could only do that if he were using the same code. I think as with the "Riddle of the Sphinx" there are THREE versions of hosts: *Old* : Maeve *Adult* : Clones, Ghost Nation -- They could not be triggered by Maeve *Infant* : Jim Delos, Abernathy, Bernard/Arnold, Bartender In fact, we were introduced to the first hybrid in season 1, Abernathy. He started to reject his programme like Delos when he was introduced to "reality" a photo of Juliet. :::TINFOIL PREDICTIONS::: I think we have hints but still have not seen the main protagonist yet... Juliet. I think Ford has already reproduced a younger version of himself, Lee (His backstory is actually Ford's and Juliet- the one person paying attention to the stories.) Ford will resurrect his great love, Juliet, to be together forever. To understand what is really going on you have to look again at the narratives Ford/Lee are creating... especially the "Epic" Lee previewed before the massacre.

What if the control unit Bernard had made & took from the secret lab was actually of William? To me, this would make Ford's new game expressly for William, is for William to eventually meet up with the now Human/Host Ford at another secret lab and be willing to 'die' so that he can be reborn as a Human/Host hybrid. There is no question that Seeing James Delos and destroying him every few months over the last 30 years gave William a lot of suffering which could make the transition easier. Another reason why this may be is that over the past 30 years in many ways William [despite trying not to] has turned into Ford's best friend, replacing Arnold.

He began to realize that immortality might be a bad idea, and maybe humans were just not made for it. So I really doubt that this is what William wants. Living forever to constantly be reminded about how he destroyed his family? He wants to escape all of that. He wants the hosts to fight back. He doesn’t want it easy. I think he would rather like to get killed in the park than become immortal. I think this immortality thing has to do with what he considers his greatest mistake.

And didn't Ford say that William's game would "begin where he ends, and end where he began," which would imply that he'd be the William he once was? If rejecting his own reality was what kept Delos' mind from accepting his new host body, then maybe Ford's game is going to help William accept his own reality. Ford managed to master the technology to allow hosts to become sentient, so perhaps Ford also figured out how to overcome the problems that William had with Delos. And I don't think that William's fate is to die. That's not really in keeping with the story. William's story is intertwined with Dolores' story.

If that is true than Bernard has been Arnold for a very long time. That would not explain the red core Bernard was printing earlier (I'm assuming the red cores are meant for the human conciousness. We see Bernard taking the core out of there. This would mean that there was another control unit out there. Because Arnold would already be in Bernard's head. I'm still convinced that the control unit Bernard had there was Ford's mind and that control unit is inside the head of the Bernard we see on the beach. I actually think the one we see on the beach is not the Bernard we see in the other parts of this season. It would fit with his comment that "he did this", referring to the lake, that Ford seems to have made by digging the whole place up. (the whole thing with the dead hosts is probably a thing there too, but we don't really know anything about that yet. So while I like the theory and I think there's a lot to it, it only works if there's a second Hybrid out there. Otherwise, the BernArnold Hybrid would not have memories of getting that control unit.

I've got a theory (of mine) i'd like you to consider; Could 'oldert' William be a host/Human hybrid. The time lines are jumbled so there could easily be some memory glitch in the story like Bernarnold is depicted doing. I've been somewhat dissuaded that Delos met older William. However there has been many a remake of Delos, so there could be a timeline where older William tried to update Delos one last time. Just a theory. The human/host hybrid is certainly going to be a thing. The question is and will be who is who? It's just a matter of when for the show and a matter of memory for the hosts/coded humans.

A truly Bicameral mind. Two occupants, a host consciousness and a ported organic one. Both need the other if you are going to create a stable version. They must accept the fact they are an android _hosting_ a human consciousness, in symbiosis with each other. This was something ford understood. However, one flaw in the Arnold is Bernard theory is where did ford get the Arnold Consciousness? He was shot through the head. It is possible that we will see a scene where there is a frozen head of Arnold in a vat somewhere? For this to work, he would need to save Arnold's brain. If his brain was being scanned somehow, so that Ford had planned this from the very instant Arnold died. In that case it would be ironic that Arnold clearly states "Ford can bring all of you back. Except me." This is what I foresee. Ford is giving Arnold this backstory, this new cornerstone, so that his host/human hybrid can be stable. It is possible that the "Cradle" or CR4-DL is the storage facility of the Cryogenically Reserved For Down Load brain of Arnold, which has also been used to store all experiences in the park? A super consciousness?

I'm curious if self-awareness is the key for Delos to achieve immorality. Or more importantly the lack there of. I think why Delos rejects reality is because his self-awareness to the fact he is now in a host body was not done organically. He knew right away which in turn caused his mind to subconsciously reject it almost like the saying "you are too smart for your own good". Now with Bernard he his on the journey of realising himself as Arnold by himself, much like how Delores gained self-awareness being Wyatt as a host. Even though Bernard is still having symptoms like Delos I believe it is more of a result of his host consciousness that has been tricked to being Bernard coming to the realization he is orginally Arnold. The point being is you can't cheat the maze, you can be helped getting there but ultimately have to take the steps. Man this show is crazy.

The Hybrid BernArnold is the character that wakes up by the lake at the beginning of the season. He has the memories of both Bernard and Arnold. That's why he is so confused. He has to make sense of everything now. He is also the solution to the human host conflict as he is the child of both. He is the new step in evolution like the fish which crawled out of the water. We "know" Bernards issue is the lack of that brain fluid. Don't think it's because he's struggling to cope with hybrid body.

You forgot one really big clue. In episode 4 Else makes a comment that Bernards memories are not time stamped, it seems that the hosts memories are suppose to be time stamped, but his are not. Humans as well do not have time stamped memories. If we did you'd remember things down to the second that they happened.

I like this theory. The only hole I see is when would Ford have put Arnold’s consciousness into Bernard. And also why would he have had Bernard shoot himself in the head?

william could also be a host already too...since he told delos the world is better without "US"...and william is playing his game to find HIMSELF just like a host because maybe he was a successful hybrid but he feels like everything in westworld isnt real he thinks he is not real...probably also the reason why hes on the park so much, why his wife commited suicide and why her daughter is looking for her.

Why does everybody assume that it's Ford, just because Bernard Arnold says so. I think Bernard Arnold has much more control and influence. After all he has a son to resurrect who does Ford have?

also... ever since he woke and realized he was a robot, he never accepted it and came to terms with it - like Dolores. Dolores woke and then decided who she was. But Bernard never had this feeling. he has just suddenly gotten worse and worse, which doesn't make sense. just because he finally knows he is not human, doesn't mean he would shut down like this. so it makes sense in all the world that Bernard is a hybrid.

People talk about these characters being 'resurrected', but that isn't true. If a brain is copied, that's all it is, a copy. Your consciousness from your dead body doesn't automatically just 'switch back on' as soon as the control unit is turned on. The copy will be for all intents and purposes "You", but your life, experiences, memories, etc. are all gone.

What I am confused about is... Bernard is a exact copy of Arnold. But no one knew that he was a host? I assume Arnold was a well know face throughout the company... and I am sure his suicide was known about. why wouldn't anyone recognize the resemblance between the two? But I agree with the "Bernardold" human/host

Probably because it was 20 years later that he brought Bernard into the world. There was nobody around who was there except ford and Delores. At least as Ford had said it to Delores.

This theory has too many holes. Firstly and probably most importantly, it would be entirely out of character for Ford to use that technology on Bernard if it wasn't stable and going off the idea that bernards tremors are similar to that of Delos, it would mean that his mind didnt take and that is far too big of a risk for Ford to take. Also Benard has been uploaded with Arnolds memories all this time if you remember the whole backstory with his son. The reason Delos didnt work is because he couldn't accept reality, and it is extremely unlikely that Arnold would be considering the fact that he wanted to die. Benard has already been constructed to be as close to Arnold as possible, he doesn't need Arnolds actual consciousness and it is unlikely that Ford would even have access to that. I think Ford could bring himself back, he could plan to upload william, william could already be a hybrid,; there are just so many options that would make more sense than changing bernards brain to be that of a guy who has been dead 30 years who he was modelled after anyways, not to mention that it is unlikely 2 consciousnesses could inhabit one body

Maybe the secret of "consciousness" is selfishness. Maybe we truly are all the same on a fundamental level: we all run mostly the same apps, but, in a world full of conflict we must defend our interests and egos, we must grimly deny that this "Me" shines in every other too, that we all have mostly the same apps, downloaded from culture and genes. The downside is that we pay for this ignorant egotism with a terrible fear of death - we cannot see that the same light will continue to burn in countless others after we are gone, that countless copies of our apps are still running and not lost to the world.
