The loss of Rickard and Brandon together has possibly led to the North TRULY forgetting what the North is meant ‘to remember.’ Ned was raised away from home; a practice not uncommon in the South, but possibly un-heard-of in the North, thus missing out on the family catechism on what the North is to remember. Could the clan secrets include facts about their relationship to the White Walkers, and the Stark role in dealing with or placating them? We know Ned’s children have very little knowledge of ‘what lies beneath’ the Crypts of Winterfell. Perhaps they should have known more, and would have, had the circle not been broken for four Lords in a row. How about if the Starks are to somehow side with the Night King? When their dead rise for battle, will they be on the Other Side?? (Hey! What if this is where ‘waking dragons from stone’ comes in?) “The Trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised, incorruptible…” (from First Corinthians and Handel’s Messiah)

I've often wondered what it is the "The North Remembers" a saying used by all the Northern Lord's/nobility and small folk but for whatever reason it seems that they actually don't. Maybe Eddard's father actually remembered and his execution as a "traitor" was a ruse. "Burn them all!" ramblings of a mad man? Or was there something deeper and darker behind the statement? I hope the books will tie up a lot of the lose ends. I just don't feel the show will have enough time to fill the ever increasing number of plot holes.

"Who thinks Davos isnt Davos" , Sorry for the seemingly random question but the chat had moved to him and White Harbor. It comes from a re read of Dance where in Mel's chapter she mentions that finger bones in a bag would be good as a basis for a glamour. It is barely half a sentence and she is just thinking it to herself, but it is a strange Checkovs Gun to be left hanging if there is no purpose. A few people in the chat had noticed the detail as well and I was just seeing if anyone had a thought. Honestly, I cant think of who would/ or why would anyone need to be/replace Davos but its worth a thought or two. If he had been replaced it would have had to have been after the Battle of the Blackwater and before his rescue when he "lost " his good luck necklace. So I dont know thank you much
@fuzzydunlop79285 жыл бұрын
It's purpose is as a red herring to distract you from other parts of her statement during that scene. You're mean to think of Davos so you don't think of what GRRM wants you to not think about. Ole' Grimmy does this often - when a reference seems so utterly blatant but without context, it's a red herring meant to distract from something else. I.e. in one of Barristan's chapters during Dance he blatantly says that Dany strikes him as the 'daughter of Ashara Dayne...' complete with the uncertain ellipses, it's mean to distract from the other stuff he says. Same with the Ned + Ashara Dayne rumors.

What has the north forgotten? 1. Teach your children the offering rites to the Old Gods 2. Kings 1st night wedding rights to provide a bastard child with kings blood 3. Starks must be Kings of Winter 4. Teach about Warging and Greensight 5. Provide bastard children to the wall. If these children show warging ability, they would be given to the Others via the weirwood gate The importance of kings blood lies in the Pact made to provide a son with warging ability to the Others. When the Starks defeated and slaughtered the Warg kings, it brought on the first long night. Then the Starks had to take on that responsibility with helps of the CotF, via sacrificing their "bastard" royal children from the remaining Warg queens.

I know by the time I’ve heard this it’s already a yr old but regards Roberts mention of the lack of repair across Winterfell I wondered if that could just be George giving illustration as to why the Planetos universe hasn’t ‘modernised’? Surely real world progression comes from fixing the old and broken and improving as you go. Planetos ppl seem not to be troubled by improvements and just accept when things are gone, they’re just gone! Poss also foreshadowing the lack of urgency to deal with the white walkers, their fatal acceptance could be why Jon Snow struggles to raise a large enough army? Cercei attitude in the show pretty much reflects this temperament.... although I’m def NOT happy about mentioning the show as a true reflection of Georges intentions. :0)

Yes, it definitely seems that Westeros in general, and Winterfell particularly, will just build on top of the rubble as it forms. I'm not sure which POV thinks the following about the First Keep, but somebody definitely remarks on the fact that it's simply the oldest current keep and that it may likely have once been the newest and best in an unrecognizably ancient collection of buildings. But when it's in ruinous disrepair, and with no available expertise on restoration, and no interest in investing like you said, it's so much cheaper and simpler for the lord of a castle to hire the same old masons practising the same old craft to throw up a "new" structure.
@carlrood44574 жыл бұрын
Now that I think of it, it's actually odd that it would be planned for Arya to be buried in Winterfell. Under normal circumstances, she'd be married into another family and would presumable be expected to be buried with her husband. Buryinf Lyanna there was part of the cover up. It was Ned saying she was still a Stark (i.e. unmarried).
@LusiaEyre3 жыл бұрын
It probably has to do with child mortality rates. With Westeros being late-medival /Tudor based I would assume they are rather high. So it makes sense for Arya to have a plot in the family crypt ready for her just in case. Unused can be gifted to someone else.

Hey dude. It's been a while since I annoyed you with a crazy theory. But I have one for you and you are going to either go nuts or you're going to think I've completely lost it. I've shared it with LML on on of his. I honestly believe I've found the Rosetta stone to this story. Prepare to have your mind blown. This will be very hard for you to accept right at first. It overturns some of the most widely accepted beliefs about history. But once you look at the story afterward you are going to be so surprised. Let's get the big pill out of the way. The Targaryans are escaped slaves. The Daynes are Ghiscari, so are the Hightowers and the Targaryans. The people of Lys and very likely the Milk Men of Qaarth are related. And the Martells are Valyrian. Let's begin with the legend of the empire of the Dawne. The amethyst empress was thrown down by the bloodstone emperor. Now, consider what I said. If pale purple eyed people are the Ghis, and the darker skinned people like the Martells are Valyrian, now the legend makes sense. The Dawne Empire that formed when the long night ended was ruled by pale purple eyed people, and the fire and blood Valyrians were a dark skinned people who defeated them and took over. The legend now makes perfect sense. The slave religion. All the slaves keep calling Dany mother. Think about how you'd react to being freed. They are conflating Dany with their God for freeing them. The mother is an aspect of the seven. Coincidence you say. But wait, there's more. The largest church is in Old Town where I say the Hightowers are Ghis. The second largest is in Kingslanding, where I say the Targaryans are Ghis. The faith of the seven holds power south of the neck and north of Dorne. Everywhere the Targaryans hold power. Within Dorne there are Red Temples and in the North Trees, none to small Targaryan influence. Even on Dragonstone they had huge idols to the seven. The Targaryans outlawed slavery. Dany fights slavery with an almost holy passion. Do these people fit the image of the children of escaped slaves or of escaped slavers? I can go on with actually textual evidence. But I don't want to waste your time if you think the entire thing is without merit. Let me know.

Graphix by Kathy The first big hint in the books. Dany sees extremely old tapestries in Meereen. Without using the names, Dany sees her people being enslaved. Which means that she sees pale purple eyed people. The doom happened only 300 years ago. So they have to be older than the doom. Maybe they were made before the empire? Well in that case the empire is supposed to have been there for a couple thousand years. Tapestries that old would be falling apart and the colours would have faded. So the most likely time to have made them would have been sure the rule of dragons. I believe Aerion Brightflame and Viserys showed us how they feel about that sort of thing. Valyrians would never have accepts tapestries reminding them of Valyrians ever being slaves. So those tapestries should logically be telling the story of the Valyrians defeating the Ghis and enslaving them. Too old and politically bad to have been made by the Ghis, and in too degraded a condition to have been made by the people currently ruling. As for the slave religions. The faith of the 7 exists in Braavos. Outside of that it has no representation. The biggest cities attributed to the Valyrians all have huge Red Temples. There are of course almost any number of possibilities. But why include the Dayne sorry, I mean. The Dawne Empire if it has so little to add to the story. Let's look at the pieces. First the Amethyst Empress. I'm am certainly not the first to connect the Targaryan appearance to her. Quite a number other people have wondered about it. But what's never made sense is how Valyrians who supposedly all died in the doom so recently could share the description. So the elements we have are, pale amethyst overthrown by Bloodstone, and bloodstone was a horrible emperor because of the ruthless enslavement and disgusting magic. But what if it's telling the story of the transition between Ghis empire and Valyrian? Consider my assumptions, Ghis are pale/purple, and the Valyrians are dark. Do the massive enslavement by the Valyrians sound like the Bloodstone Emperor? It didn't make sense before, but if I'm right and we flip the descriptions, doesn't it all start to fit?
@amberantk16 жыл бұрын
Good possibility. Now, where do the Faceless Men fit in??
@seanmayory6 жыл бұрын
Graphix by Kathy The faceless men, oh my. The problem I have with my theory on the faceless men is that it get ridiculously big without giving enough info to actually convince you it isn't all tinfoil. To begin take off the names (or as GRRM might say, I file off the numbers) and try sorting details and similar themes and images. A few things start to fall into the same pile. But before I dig too deep into that, let's address a possible connection in the story. The Alchemist in the Citadel. Why. Well let's see what he does. He hires a young man who takes care of Walgrave, and then replaces the young man. Interesting. What's up with Walgrave? Well, this Maester seems to be loosing his mind to old age. The position he holds if that he teaches about the Ravens. There is so much to unpack here. If there was a conspiracy in the Citadel, the Maester of ravens would have to be a part of it. That Maester would be reading all the messages and teaching everyone about how to send messages. If there was a secret code to those messages he'd be the one to teach it. If you wanted to take over or insert your own conspiracy who would be the best person? Pate. There are certainly any number of things to learn there. But not only did he get Walgraves key, he took over the job of Pate which allows him to send and receive ravens without anyone seeing his messages, plus he gets to read all the other messages. But doesn't Walgrave seem a little off some how? Let's look at a few citadel/maester stories, some mysteries. Yandel was found in the stables. The former maester of Winterfell was revealed by Barbary Dustin to be the son of a maester and a member of the Hightower family. The Red Viper had a child with some one in Old Town that no one can find. There was an Umber sent to the citadel who was rumoured to have hit a male whore. Within the lockbox we see silver coins, a lock of yellow hair, a gauntlet, and a female figure with facial hair identical to Walgrave. Melisandre, known for her illusions tells us they need totems. What if Walgrave is a woman? What if Walgrave was the one his by the Umber? The mother of Yandel and all the other kids. And it isn't a woman of the Hightower that was having an affair with a maester, it was a son of the Hightower. How does all this tie together. Well on the one hand we have a person using an illusion to look like some one else, and on the other we have a person loosing their mind that may in fact be using an illusion to appear different. What if Walgrave is also a faceless person? Now we have Jaqan replacing the person taking care of Walgrave who may be a faceless person who is no longer able to properly cope reality. Once you see this first connection it gets interesting. Maester's wear masks and loose their family names. Faceless become no one. Maester's where grey robes. Faceless where robes half white and half black. If there isn't a solid current connection, there is at least the hint of a past one. It's at this point the Iron keys the maesters hold that becomes the target of my suspicions. We have the deep vaults of the Citadel controlled by iron key holders. Members of high Lord families are routinely sent to become maesters. All these keys, lords, and vaults start making me think very heavily of the Iron Bank. The other connection we have in the story is the Shadowmen of the East with their red masks. Again it's really hard to keep this tinfoil wrapped in a tight ball. And while I haven't nailed down everything, most recently I've been looking into the name the House of Black and White. Most people first think of this as house means building. But I believe this may actually mean FAMILY of Black and White. This is an attempt to tie all the loose threads together. First, the Onyx emperor had at least two children. Amethyst and Bloodstone. Now my belief is that this legend may simply be allegory and that what are said to be single emperors just means empires. The Pearl Emperor was probably intended to refer to the Empire of the Fisher Queens. The Onyx empire may have split in two or it just makes for a cool way to tell it. If there is any chance I'm correct about the Ghis being pale and the Valyrians being black or dark like summer islanders, then the truth may be hidden in this. Because the Legend refers to a brother and sister it actually suggests that the Family was either half white and half black. Or it suggests a new family created by joining the blood of both houses. And the last one I think may be the most likely. I think the truth of the group may be that they literally are run by a merged family or that they are dedicated to creating a merged family. If Viserys was a Ghis, and the Martells are Valyrian, then the their children would have been part of a merged line. The reason he sent Quentin may have been to attempt to try again. Remember the contract was signed in Braavos. However I have a weird feeling that it's not the whole story. The Dragon has three heads. I think the Targaryans may potentially have been a bloodline containing three families with the combined name. The families of Tar, Gar, and Yan. Gar is probably short for Garth. So. My favourite theory is probably the one most people would simply laugh at. But the hints for the faceless men may have been dropped in the first chapter. Bran notes that his father was wearing a different face when he went to judge the man who ran from the wall. We are later introduced to the idea of skinchangers. The idea that weirwoods are essentially faceless until they are give one. And lastly, the concept of the children of the forest. Could you argue that a skinchangers is essentially faceless? Bran wears the face of Summer, the face of Hodor, and the faces of Ravens. The preserved faces used by them actually contain the memories of those people. But are they physically transforming or is the face a Totem for an illusion? Arya sees her own masked face through her own eyes. Because she doesn't understand and knows the truth, she probably can't see the illusion everyone else sees. If Arya was looking through the eyes of some one else at herself, would she recognize herself or would she see an ugly girl and think it was some one else? I also don't think most people understand the true nature of payment to the faceless men. The story of the faceless men I believe holds the answer to the true price. What was the price of the prayer of the second man who actually wanted some one else killed? He had to become a faceless man. That's the high price for that wish. Fundamentally I think that again everyone reads "all men must die, all men must serve" in the wrong way. The faceless men are talking about themselves, they are all dead and they all serve. I believe the faceless men are dead. They are wights. Remember the face of the kindly man? Was the skull like face with the worm actually his true face, with no illusion? What is dead may never die. That is not to say they haven't gone off the deep end. Because they believe all gods are faces of the many faced god they may have decided that all religious people must die because that how they follow their God. It is also possible that all men were sold to the many faced god. The faceless men may have been contracted by the slaves in the mines to kill the Valyrians and their dragons. If I'm right and the price of their serves is that you must become a faceless man, the slaves may have in fact sold themselves as payment. The faceless men may be collecting on that payment, and they may view all people to be part of that payment for some reason. The other idea is that it was the Lannisters or all the people of Westeros that made that contract. The wall may be functionally holding back either the method of payment or the full implementation of the contract. The Martells are the farthest from the wall. If either the Targaryans or the Martells are Valyrian the monsters on the other side of the wall may be waiting to finally attack and finish the contracted job of killing every last Valyrian. They don't kill wildlings right? As I said, too many ideas that make a certain level of sense. I've never managed to find a rosetta for the faceless men. So far...
@amberantk16 жыл бұрын
Arya sees her own masked face through her own eyes. Because she doesn't understand and knows the truth, she probably can't see the illusion everyone else sees. If Arya was looking through the eyes of some one else at herself, would she recognize herself or would she see an ugly girl and think it was some one else? I don’t have a book handy. When Arya ‘saw’ through h the cat, she saw truly. Serio Forel taught her to look. Remember the face of the kindly man? Was the skull like face with the worm actually his true face, with no illusion? What is dead may never die. The worm-eyed face was added ringer for Blood Raven, whiter than white. Aria tried to pluck the worm and eat it, so she ‘saw’ the desired illusion, though with perhaps unanticipated results. I see some basis for your claim, but will have to study theater. So Robert, is this discussion wasting your allotted bandwidth/space? ;-)
