I like the nod to the fact that old Westerns and Japanese films were sort of remakes of each other with Wild West outlaws and lawmen taking the place of Samurai and the like.

I’m wondering if there’s some significance in the costume changes? Dolores has been wearing the same clothes so far and she’s stayed pretty much on her power-grabbing, revenge phase. Whereas Maeve is changing and ‘evolving’ and so do her clothes. It also struck me that Hector and Armistice still haven’t ‘changed’ either. It’s like in this episode characters that are developing do not look the same as they did in episode one. But, I could just be reading into things... I was actually surprised when you pointed out the similarity in violence between Dolores and Maeve. But you were right - she could have just paralysed them. From my POV, it seems Maeve’s violence was easier to sympathise with because she was avenging Sakura and protecting those she’s with that are weaker. But Dolores seems to be aimlessly killing people and has become quite an unsympathetic character this season.

7:40 I think this episode highlights another social commentary. In a time of no war, humans demand the hyperviolent Shogun World as diversion. We know violence is the primary draw because Lee tells Maeve so. I noticed Lee's use of nearly identical narratives doesn't seem to have been a deal breaker for guests, many of whom would have visited no-holds-barred Westworld already and come away asking for something more intense. They would have recognized the Edo village layout as Sweetwater's, the key players and events of the shootout and heist, Akane as Maeve, etc., so the recycled story is secondary to the desire for blood and combat in an otherwise peaceful society.
@Jon609876 жыл бұрын
The similarity of the two parks actually might make guests feel more comfortable with their first few visits to Shogun World. So it might even be a plus that the initial story lines are so similar.

The techs with Maeve will know where the emergency first aid kits like William used are in Shogun world. They should be able to bring back Akane's daughter. I suspect that by the last season Maeve will have her own 'family' of stray hosts. As she travels thru each park looking for her daughter I think she will ad 1 or 2 hosts to her merry band of misfits.

I'm most probably very wrong but I get the feeling that Maeve's daughter maybe doesn't even exist in the first place... Maybe it's just her "backstory" and that she's just a "memory" kinda like Bernard's son. This theory conflicts with the flashbacks that Maeve has with her daughter because they include the man in black, implying that it really happened, but I'm thinking they could probably have included him in her backstory/memory for some reason... Anyway it's not probably but there's a slight chance that her daughter doesn't exist in my opinion.

all the articles and things keep saying maeve is the same as dolores with the killing and i disagree. To the point that she could have just paralyzed them,thats unreasonable when at this point we know she still wants her daughter. If she just paralyzed them who knows how long that would have lasted and still put them in the way later while trying to get out the park, where as killing them eliminates all of that. On top of that as stated that was for sakura AND the fact that they were literally about to kill them.. not all willy nilly like dolores bc they disagree

Well done, Rob! Good video, I feel the same way about that control/chaos aspect. Both ladies are all about control and getting their way. Maeve is at least likeable character. The way they present Dolores just turns the audience against her. I get it, as a machine she probably wouldn't feel much of anything for anyone, but goddamn is her story difficult to watch. It was rather enjoyable to see her steady progression to consciousness in season 1, but now that's all down a shitter. She's getting dangerously close to the Ramsay/Joffrey territory. Also I'd start shitting bricks if I were William. Imagine Maeve actually getting her hands on him. She had a moment during the whole Sakura-Akane dance.

Maeve expanding her powers through tapping into languages and being able to control other hosts through the mesh network made me think that the 'Door' of this season could as with last seasons Maze be a metaphorical 'door' of the mind in which there may be a true epiphany/ enlightenment moment for Maeve (or another host) in which all the information stored in the code/sub-neural net may become accessible to/ known, in effect opening up that information that's locked away allowing a host to become effectively Omniscient.
@Schweighsr6 жыл бұрын
I assumed that the "one-third" of the Hosts who were completely wiped were the Hosts Ford freed from Cold Storage. Ford was somehow able to make them 'work', but they lack personalities. See the way Clementine reacts to the 'New Clementine' in the Mariposa scene. Just as when a Hard Drive is erased, the data isn't necessarily gone, its location is merely deleted from the registry. The data doesn't actually disappear until it is over-written. So Bernard's memories, for example, are free floating and he is unable to put them in order (this was explained last episode). I imagine that all of the 'erased' Hosts are the same. But Ford's 'reveries' update allowed Hosts to access data that was deleted, but not over-written, and this allows the Hosts to function (in a limited way) even though they are supposedly 'empty'. Or that is what I assumed was happening, at least.

My wife and I watched the episode on Amazon. Much to my surprise, we kept right on viewing past the trailer for Phase Space, but also all the way through the behind the scenes video. We found it fascinating, but I couldn't help thinking it was a way of lobbying the Television Academy members in the audience for Creative Arts Emmy nominations in costume design, special effects, production design, hair, make-up, and cinematography. Because six of the ten episodes were first aired before the May 31st eligibility deadline and the Television Academy's "hanging episodes" rule, this entire season is eligible for the Emmys. Hmm, "Westworld" vs. "Game of Thrones" -- that's a matchup worth keeping an eye on!

People are saying the Delores's and Maeve's arcs are different with the latter being more caring as she hunts for her daughter. This overlooks the fact that they're both responsible for the murder of large numbers of people. For Delores it's guests but for Maeve it's Delos staff in the Hub. One thing that will be interesting. When Maeve finds the host that played the part of her daughter she'll now be playing someone else. If she resets her back to the previous character she'll also be killing the current one.
@InDeepGeek6 жыл бұрын
David Durant - I tend to think of Dolores and Maeve's arcs starting when they truly "broke free" from their loop. For Maeve that was *after she massacred all the Delos staff. I think Ford programmed her to do that ...

I think that Maeve is a God like figure and Delores is a Lucifer like figure. All of Maeve’s intentions are motivated by love, even if some of what she does is harsh. She killed the shogun’s army after Akune displayed a love towards her daughter. She’s keeping Felix and the other Delos employee around because they’ve developed a friendship and respects them. Everything Delores does is motivated by hate and anger. She, like Lucifer, thinks that she can overthrow her creators and create a better life.

Hey Robert. I actually got out of bed and turned my box back on to post this. I realized you may be missing a vital part of what Dolores had the tech do to Teddy. You seem to suggest she had him bump up aggression and turn down compassion, but that was done to many other hosts like Maeve, Hector, Armistice and even Rebus, while they were 'hot' and with no system reset and to no apparent ill effects. I got from the interaction that she was having the tech overwrite (in fact the pad is asking for OK or Cancel on the Overwriting of Teddy's entire personality file) with another different personality altogether, that would suggest. Maybe she wants to merge Teddy and ??? like she is a new being based on Dolores and Wyatt. That, without a clean wipe or whatever the jargon the tech offered, would definitely do some damage, IMO. Savvy? ;)

Well now I know Delores being the great hope for the hosts as whole is over. She is honestly has turned into a machevelian eugenitist. Mayve with her gifts is turning into the hope as a messiah like character for the host. With her new gift I believe she is the key for the hosts to achieve self-awareness for all. I want to believe Mayve is unexpected outcome from Ford, much live Jurassic Park "nature finds a way" but I am sure that will be turned upside down. This show is changing how stories are told. Fantastic season so far.

I wouldn't count out Dolores/Teddy yet. They still got the Lake Event, and the aftermath of that. It could turn out that nice Teddy = death for Dolores and Teddy, and (temporarily) mean Teddy = life for both of them. Then, a fake Teddy is sent to the lake to throw off Delos, Teddy is changed back to the man Dolores loves - and one that now remembers everything, and Dolores/Teddy can finally ride off into the sunset. Immortal. But unable to have children.

I'm liking the way the show is handling the viewpoints of both the hosts and the guests as well as the personel. To the hosts it is apparent that the westworld is as much the real world as the real world is also an illusion that the humans are trapped in. The humans eccape the real world and the hosts are escaping to the real world. Nice contrast on how both have their own share of both illusion and reality. Also i like seeing how a standard "Event" plot line is allow to play out. Usually a show and especially movies will have the calvary show up or the protagonist does their bit and the end. Westworld is most interesting in that they are showing that things take quite some doing to clean up.

I was really impressed with the Cinematic cues they used to make SW feel like a Samurai flick from the 70's, not unlike how WW feels like a Spaghetti/American Western (I think more of a mix of those two than necessarily one or the other). I'm looking forward to seeing this continue to translate to the other 3 parks (as The Raj seems to be a smaller, game preserve rather than full-blown world, so I don't necessarily expect Bollywood to come alive there). I wonder how the other 3 will differ, as well. Is there one for the whole family in all parts of it, like a Lego or Disneyland? I'd love to see dark scenarios of silly animal mascot hosts running amok. lol!

I believe William is on a redemption arc as is Dolores. William started good, went dark (MiB) and just now is starting to come back to the light side. He rescued Lawrence's family and voiced serious reservations about the whole immortality project - almost as if he's grown weary of it. I believe we'll see that trend continue with William. At the end I believe it will be revealed that William has been a human-host hybrid for some time for some as yet undisclosed reason. However, it's not perfect - his hybrid body has a shelf-life (35 days) so he has been discreetly "resetting" to new "hardware" before that to avoid the James Delos issues. This will be revealed in some not yet seen secret lab - maybe discovered by William's daughter. But he's lost his purpose and is contemplating "shutting off" for good. I believe Ford solved the problems and perfected the technique. William will rediscover his purpose and become a permanent host hybrid to help lead the awakened hosts in a younger (Jimi Simpson) version of himself - he won't need the aged version of himself because he will have severed all ties to Delos putting his daughter in charge (who he will also reconcile with). In the outside world "old William" will appear to die from natural causes or from some supposed accident in the park. Dolores, meanwhile, started good, is going down the Wyatt evil side en-force but will come around and be redeemed as well. Perhaps by William. It's because they both went on this arc together they will be able to reconnect. In "Riddle of the Sphinx" old William drinks the whiskey in his final conversation with James Delos. I believe this was an allusion to William's "offering to the Devil" because, at that point, he was also a host hybrid. "The thing is...I'm not so sure anymore. I'm beginning to think this whole enterprise was a mistake. People aren't meant to live forever...The world is better off without you, Jim, possibly without me." Maeve vs. Dolores/William at the end of the season.

Just a small inaccuracy in the explanation. It is about an ad hoc network, in particular a mobile ad hoc network, not a mesh network. Mesh network typically refers to stationary multi-hop wireless network, for example, installed on rooftop of rural buildings. Mesh network is a sub-category of ad hoc network, which is a more general term. The hosts alive are not stationary. They form a mobile ad hoc network, another sub-category of ad hoc network.

About Maeve's and Dolores' more or less "pathetic" struggle to free themselves… I think it helps if we think of our-selves as hosts rather than humans. We too struggle to free ourselves (and often end up "praying at someone else's altar" in the end. To me, OUR struggle to not blindly follow OUR programming is what Westworld is all about…

My first impulse on learning of a third of the (drowned?) hosts was that these were hosts that had made the transition to sentience; therefore no programming was evident. What I think is going on is that delores is responsible for the 1/3 of the host are destruction as you mentioned she kill and destroys those who do not agree with her. Perhaps she turns them into mindless drones following her every comand without question. Once she has no need of them or they are killed she toses them out. As we see in them all dead hosts in the water. As for Bernard I think he has inserted the control unit in the next episode and becoming a true Arnold. However,in the process destroys the cradle as we see him in the next episode preview. So he did not directly killed the hosts that was delores but Bernard destroyed the way to bring them back. Lastly for mave I think we all guessed she found a way to access the mesh network to control the hosts. That will somehow play out in future episodes and a way to find her daughter as the host can locate each other trough the network. P.s love how you go into details in these videos.

If you 'kill ' a host with less than a head shot, they come back, more conscious and full of hatred to you. Maeve knows this. She hated the humans who made her suffer and 'die ' so many times. But what does she do when she has power? I would not mind so long as one other character said as much, but it seems the writers just wanted a bloody spectacle and didn't care about the implications. At least they showed Dolores was quietly opposed when she was wicked to the 'children ' - the preconscious hosts. I found the power upgrade to be a deus ex machina - it reminds me of Neo in the Matrix sequel when he can suddenly stun machines in the real world. This world doesn't follow its own rules and so my immersion breaks. But I love so much about this anyway.

I personally have no interest whatsoever in the shogun world, I wish they spent more time with the old characters, there's so much to do and explore what's the point of introducing a whole bunch of characters that I personally can't bring myself to give a shit about

Hang on....how were the guests supposed to fight with samurais etc when they're using swords? Guns were rigged not to hurt humans, but swords and knives? How did THAT work?

Love your videos on WW. This episode is the worst one in my book because it was boring. Shogun world scenes were subtitled making it tedious to watch and read at the same time, the lack of dialog due to Japanese slowed the narrative of show down by 50%, and the self serving sets, clothing, and fight scenes that were for show not to push the narrative forward is the focus in my opinion. They dropped plot for visuals. We got at best 50 % of normal plot and for 1st time, I had to FF through much of Shogun scenes due to dancing and fighting with no dialog. Your thoughts?

Plot or content wise, it is as you said. But I quite enjoyed this episode whose significance among the entire season might be further revealed later. BTW, every episode of this season has a different director so far, so the disparate genres are quite expected for me.

That's how quite a bit of the fans all over the world watch these shows, with subtitles I mean.

And I also hope Rinko Kikuchi and Hiroyuki Sanada won't just be one-off cameos for this show. Love their acting so much. Hope they will join the hosts' uprising somewhere or another later.

It was a bizarre and relatively pointless episode in terms of the overall plot. Seems like they just wanted to feature some Samurais for no other reason than that.

I apologize for using common sense but as a guest it would be easy to go to Westworld like William and learn how to shoot a gun. However show gun world requires you to learn sword play and fight against samurai warriors and no matter how much you practice the weeks or even months before you go to the park I find it laughable any guest could possibly have a chance against one of these swordsman. Also how can the management protect guests from a chopped off arm in a full on sword fight with a samurai warrior? Shogun world seems a bit of a stretch to me especially if WW isn’t violent enough as guests are not going to be able to fight with ancient swords n weapons vs. trained Japanese warriors. Ok I’ll shut up now. Sorry.
@russellroesner60736 жыл бұрын
Ps. In original 1973 film, only one subplot occurred in midevil world as guests had to really know how to fight with shields and swords. That’s why I think WW is the only believable place any guest could kill or defend themselves. Raj world seemed far more believable than Shogun world. Fighting Ninjas with swords, daggers, and throwing stars as an average guest seems ridiculous to me. Your thoughts?
@ruthbennett75636 жыл бұрын
+Russell Roesner my thoughts center on the "themes" which separate the demographics of those worlds' patrons. Rajworld is more about unethically (lawful?) role-bound authority beyond question of society as a vacation (bleah!) & Westworld/Edoworld is all about the unethically (lawful?) exercise of violent power as a vacation. Unfortunately, ethics NEVER take a vacation. Except, perhaps on the realm of the imagination. Given that the hosts are promoted as being "imaginary", the horror comes from going evil in reality, instead of one's mind. Like all horror, this is a morality play which questions the nature of Virtue... Hopefully, beyond basic Baptist Theology/Dogma. Thanks for the enjoyable chance to think out loud...
@julianne0896 жыл бұрын
It probably has fewer guests, and I’m sure they’d program the hosts to fail to harm ( much) but give a good fight...they’d probably get repeat visitors. Like how William favors Westworld. I think also many people tame Martial arts classes and may or may not be good at it. I’d think they’d get off in this world, imo...
@julianne0896 жыл бұрын
Russell Roesner also I think this is not as large a world...I think westworld is the most vast with the most story lines probably. Even The Raj is likely pretty small in comparison

"the herd" Nietzsche much, Dolores? Teddy is "the concept of the good man" Dolores is the "well-turned out Human Being, proud and sure of the future" This show is sooo fkin Nietzschean it isn't funny.

i think this is where the "wyatt" character will come in. teddy will start acting like wyatt his arch enemy with no mercy. but he will remember that now. and may turn back good again and/or become his own man. he might fight it, might have killed himself for good if he realizes hes only there to be a "black hat"

Bernard's story is the only thing keeping me invested in this show. Dolores's and Maeve's quests are boring and becoming more and more like regular formulaic TV with every episode. Akane No Mai was the weakest episode of both seasons. I hope this is not a trend.

So...Maeve has telepathy now and (if needed by the plot) she can simply give commands to hosts to get her out of sticky situations; isn't that lucky. And all the hosts have the ability to speak and understand all the different languages used by hosts across all parks; how convenient. And the narratives that we see in the parks are all going to be basically the same too? This is just turning into lazy writing all the way around. You've got six different universes to play with, and any story arcs you'd care to conjure based on these unique genres...and you punt and simply show the same narrative in multiple parks, chalking it up to a lazy writer character *in the show*...what a bunch of bullshit. Also, I don't give a shit about and don't care to see the "love story" arcs of fucking robots like dolores and teddy. Jumping their narratives, yes; jumping their narratives, but *choosing* to hold onto the emotional elements *inherent to that narrative*? More fucking bullshit. The nostalgic behavior of dolores bidding farewell to her "previous life" and experiences with teddy--while still going forward on a mission to "rescue her father" (who was no more her father than a toaster could be--and she knows it) was false in every moment and took me right out of the show. This show may not be off the rails yet, but it sure is shimmying a lot.
