Fun Fact: According to producer/co-writer Dean Devlin, the U.S. military had agreed to support the film by allowing the crew to film at military bases, consulting the actors who have military roles, etc. However, after learning of the Area 51 references in the script, they withdrew their support.

For me ID4 will forever be the biggest film event ever. I was 19 working at a movie theater when this thing released. They ran a decoration contest and I built a 20 foot diameter saucer flying out of the back wall of our theater shooting a skybeam into a building. We ran it on 8 of the 10 screens our theater had on 6 prints (two interlocked rooms). We had a concession cart that had never been used before and as concessions crew chief I was walking up and down the ilse before the movie started selling popcorn, sodas, and candy. We had never had all box office and concession stands open until this flick.

I am absolutely flabbergasted that you didn't talk about the score. I may not watch the movie every year, but I listen to that main theme at least every month or two. It's just absolutely beautiful while also being action packed and exciting. It's doing a lot of the heavy lifting in making this film iconic, and that score is MVP just behind Roland Emmerich.

One thing I love about the computer virus being what saves the day is how it's a modern twist to War of the Worlds. I'd never seen it but decided to watch it in preparation for this podcast and the moment they mentioned a "cold" I thought they were going to use a bioweapon and was surprised at the "twist" of it being a computer one

@@greggartdeptIt’s obviously unrealistic that one guy could do it so quickly, but there’s nothing impossible about it. That’s like saying if a software engineer were used to developing Linux, it’d be _IMPOSSIBLE_ for them to develop any code for Microsoft. No, they would just need time to get familiar with Windows’ architecture. Like I said, it’s probably unrealistic for someone to do it as quickly as he did in the movie, but it’s not impossible.

We're at the point in film now where you can actually go back 100 years and pick a film from each year to represent a list like this, some years might get two, maybe three, depending on the quality of films that year. Trainspotting, Fargo, and From Dusk till Dawn all came out in 96 alongside Independence Day.

They didn't really emphasize the back stories of smith and goldblum and their respective motives in the theatrical cut and I thought that ended up being one of the more impactful parts of the movie.

I love idea and a weekly show a lot - but wow the run time is out of hand. A podcast that takes over an hour is just excessive. I know this is new but there was a lot of talking over each other where points were lost - particularly Micheal talking over Alex - at one point she says, "There are 2 scenes I ..." and he cut her off and we didn't get the second scene she wanted to highlight. Also I know this is #1 - but - I was much less interested in office chatter about Dan and how the list works and much more interested in the film and why it got on the list. If you cut out needless chatter about internal stuff and had just a touch more organization this could have been 45 minutes easy and we wouldn't have missed any points about the movie. The great thing about Cinefix movie lists is it just gets to the movies and stays on topic - not goes off on how the top 10 was selected. Great idea, but needs some more polish on the execution.

Excellent analysis but calling it a masterpiece is pushing it. It’s riddled with errors, cliches and improbabilities. Destruction is one of my favorite things to see and the countdown scene was superb. Explosion of the White House was ICONIC. The Boomer section in the tunnel was ridiculously executed. Age differences in movies are sometimes glaring. Glenn Close who played Robin Williams mother in The World according to Garp was only 5 years older. Anne Bancroft was only 5 years older than Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate, playing his parents good friends😎

It’s probably not, but I like the idea that this top 100 list is a parody, where increasingly bad/flawed movies are going to be named, and all of the cast will try to be polite about the movie because they think their coworkers genuinely loved the movie, but actually these are movies in nobodies top 100. Unlikely, but Independence Day is a movie I’ve heard talked about much more negatively than positively recently.
