Have you heard of index fund investing before? It's one of the best ways to get started with investing for beginners and everyone else putting money into the stock market.
One of the best companies offering index funds is Vanguard. They lead the industry in the lowest-cost investment options and continue to get cheaper as time goes on.
In this video, I break down everything you need to know about index fund investing for beginners and even experienced investors.
Index funds are the simplest way to invest your money. All of the stocks held within them are based on a specific index so the decisions of what to invest your money into are already taken care of for you.
Index funds are fairly safe. Investing in individual stocks by themselves is very risky since you're putting all of your eggs in one basket. But if you invest in an index fund then you're putting your money into a large group of stocks that are pre-determined based on a particular index and goal. This gives you a chance to spread your risk among hundreds or even thousands of different companies.
Based on history and many financial studies, index funds turn out to be more profitable than actively managed funds. Over a longer period of time, we've found that it's very difficult for a fund manager (handling a mutual fund) to successfully pick investments that will beat a standard S&P 500 index.
Watch the rest of the video to find out additional advantages of investing in index funds.

Hey Jarrad, Thanks for another great video! I've been watching you for some time now (through another KZbin Account) and you're tenacity and consistency honestly inspired me to walk in a similar path here on KZbin. So I decided to create this personal channel where I'm going to try and discuss issues regarding education & personal finance for the young generations. Although most of the information (ETF, Index Fund, Passive Investing) I garner myself came from people like you, Nate O'brien, & Graham Stephan, I hope to grow this channel and have a similar voice power to the general public. So I just wanna say thank you so much for putting these useful information out there at a regular basis. I hope you read this so you can see that what you're doing is affecting younger adults like myself. Cheers!

Great video Jarrad! I am glad i found your channel and subscribed. I love index funds, up until 2019 i was over diversified in my 401k and can you believe i only made 800-900 usd in 5 years??? During a bull market. Thats when i decided to only invest in S&p500 100% of my 401k. I am up 24k in gains since 01/01/2019. I personally can take risk since i have a long horizon and some people have told me not to put all my eggs in one basket, but i see the S&p 500 as a well diversified fund.... i feel that if the S&P500 were to crash to $0... then pretty much everyone would be screw as well. Also i applied this to my personal roth, where i invest 100% in a large growth index fund. I know it has some overlap with S&p500, but the way that i see it is that i get a large exposure to large growth with both index and some exposure to value stock with the S&p 500.

Very insightful Jarrad! Thank you! Question for you - I’m learning from members of the FIRE movement, if you retire early (before 62) and begin pulling money from your ETFs then how much would you pay on taxes each time? I’m married and am in the 12% taxable bracket. Thank you!
@JarradMorrow
@JarradMorrow 3 жыл бұрын
I can't really tell you an exact number because I don't know what your tax bracket will be at that point in time. It would be impossible for me to give you an accurate answer. The tax bracket you're in today might not be the same one you're in when you start pulling money from the account. It's all going to depend on how much you plan to live off of at that time and what the brackets look like at that time as well. If you're going through the planning process then just assume the brackets won't change from today (even though they most likely will) to get an idea. Then as you move closer to the date you plan on retiring early you can adjust to something closer to what they are at that point in time. Think of it like a moving target, but at least you're going to be headed in the right direction.

No, I think that's great. Leaving it alone to let it grow (and continuing to invest money into it) is the way to go. I'd start with investing in your Roth IRA before a taxable investment account. Keep in mind though that VTI already holds Real Estate in it so you could technically just invest in VTI, VXUS, and BND.

Say I put down my minimum investment right? The next month comes around and now I’m ready to put in my monthly contribution. Do I have to put down a minimum investment each and every time? For example if the Vanguard S&P 500 requires a $3,000 minimum investment and I want to contribute monthly. Is it $3,000 monthly or can I invest less after I put down that initial minimal investment?
@JarradMorrow
@JarradMorrow 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. No you don't. If you're investing in VFIAX which has a minimum investment of $3k then once you reach that threshold you can invest any amount you want. But there's an ETF version of VFIAX which is VOO that doesn't have an initial minimum investment of $3k. VOO holds the exact same stocks as VFIAX, but it can be traded while the market is open. VFIAX is only traded at the end of every day the market is open. If you're going to invest in the ETF then I'd recommend using an investing platform like M1 Finance so you're able to purchase fractional shares. Let me know if you have any more questions.

@@anfone701 You generally want to contribute to your tax advantaged accounts [401(k) and IRA] before starting a taxable account. So assuming your 401(k) has good investment options and low fees (including low expense ratios) you should max out your 401(k) @ $19,500 and your IRA @ $6,000 each year if salary and budget allows. 75% --- Vanguard 500 Index Fund Admiral Shares (VFIAX) 7.5% --- Vanguard Mid-Cap Growth Index Fund Admiral Shares (VMGMX) 7.5% --- Vanguard Real Estate Index Fund Admiral Shares (VGSLX) 10% --- Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Admiral Shares (VBTLX) . You investment portfolio should be viewed as a whole [401(k) + IRA] so it's tough to suggest without knowing your investments in your 401(k) & IRA but what you list is satisfactory. Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares (VTSAX) is generally preferred over S&P 500 + Mid Cap but you are hedging a Mid Cap Growth bias which can be okay. You do *not* want REITs VGSLX in a *taxable* account.

I'm surprised you're not able to invest in the ETF though. I didn't have any issues with this when I was using the Vanguard platform to purchase their ETF's. Either way, don't let that hold you up with getting your money into the Admiral Shares at least.

@ *ML* If buying directly from Vanguard you can only buy Vanguard ETFs by the whole share not factions of a share. Are you contributing to your 2019 or 2020 Roth IRA?

So how to make a million invest into a fund that returns 9.9% deposit in 300 a month and in 35 years $1,003,920.92 will be in the pot. Simples maybe S&P 500🤔

Hi Jarrad, I opened up and funded a brokerage account with Ameritrade and now that I logged in, it seems to me like I’m reading a totally different language, how can everyone say that investing is so easy? I have no idea how or what to choose 😕

The layout of each brokerage is going to be different. Which type of account did you open (taxable account, IRA, etc)? And what types of investments are you looking for?

Well that is the thing, I have not selected anything, just opened up an “investment account” with a few hundreds. I have some CDs and high yield savings accounts and don’t have to worry about those, so I guess I wanted something I don’t have to continuously monitor kinda.

I would suggest starting with investing in an IRA account. Index funds are an easy way to passively invest. Did you see the video I put out where I show you my IRA account. If not then you can watch it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/noGldqmMaamAqbc

He keeps referring to Vanguard ETF’S as index funds. This is very misleading. Vanguard offers the etf equivalent to an index fund; such as VTI being the ETF equivalent of VTSAX, but they are two different things. This is driving me insane, please clarify to the viewers.
@JarradMorrow
@JarradMorrow 3 жыл бұрын
VTI is the ETF version of an index fund. You can split hairs however you want, but at the end of the day VTI is technically an index fund. There's no reason for me to confuse the average investor and waste their time by trying to break this down.

If someone made that much in 4 months then they're either lying, started with a large initial investment amount, or invested in something highly speculative. I don't have any advice for someone who is trying to get rich quick other than that's the wrong way to approach investing.
