The Vanguard Investment Group currently has around $7 trillion dollars in assets under management. Some of their investment options are index funds, ETFs, actively managed funds, and a whole lot more. Vanguard is currently the largest provider of mutual funds and the second-largest provider of exchange traded funds (ETFs) in the world behind Blackrock.
The reason why Vanguard is so unique in its investment approach isn't so obvious to the average investor so I wanted to call a few of those reasons out.
In this video, we'll go through some of the more unknown and eye-opening facts about the Vanguard investment group that might change how you view their investment options.

Always remember that incentives determine the type of advice they give you so one that charges an hourly fee is less likely to be problematic.

I had a $14,000 IRA with them way back in 2008 when the crash happened and it dropped to less than $8000. I was new to investing and SO pissed I never put in another dime. I checked it last year and it was at $54,000.

I'm thankful Vanguard went into ETFs. Foreigners like me who cannot invest in their mutual funds and have the lowest cost index fund in the country hovering at .5%, ETFs are a lifesaver

Can you buy an index fund on an online brokerage or do you only buy ETFs that mirror index funds? If so, how do you buy actual index funds? Thanks

Etfs regardless of the company which issues them are the best way to create and grow generatioanal wealth. I am 21 I live in Romania and I already invest on Interactive Brokers platform in ETFs (S&P 500 and others). One very important thing is avoiding taxes on capital gains by moving to a country whith 0 taxes on capital gains. The best example is Switzerland. As Warren Buffet said about Jack Bogle: "If a statue is ever errected to honor the person who has done more for (American) investors, the hands down choice should be Jack Bogle." May Jack Bogle rest in peace in Heaven.

I have to give JB credit. Because of what he has done with Index mutual funds, all other brokers followed suite. Including Schwab, Fidelity, T.Row Price, ...etc. Now us common retail investors get free to extremely low costing index mutual funds. Also the threshold to begin are now down to $1 with index mutual funds.

Great video! A bit of clarification, Vanguard was created with a mutual structure which serves the needs of the fund shareholders first. However, the other asset managers with publicly traded stock like BlackRock, State Street, or T. Rowe Price - it's not so much that they don't have their fund shareholder's backs or best interest at heart, it's that they have two masters to serve: their public shareholders AND their fund shareholders and those interests can run counter to the other. That being said, I personally wouldn't have my money invested anywhere else other than Vanguard - I know their interests are aligned with mine.

got my boys(20 and 24 now) into the Vanguard VFIAX fund 2 years ago and they each have $200 a month direct deposit going into the fund each month. The greatest gift I've given them is the knowledge that its the slow, steady, consistent investor that wins in the long run. To see their faces after the first year's return was amazing. I could actually see the light bulb moment when they realized their money was growing with the compound interest. They will be all set by the time they are 50.

I love and use Vanguard for my taxable investments. I use Fidelity for my Roth IRA. Both companies are great!

Good content. I liked Vanguard's philosophy right from the start and I have been using Vanguard Funds consistently for decades. While I have done very well, over the last few years I have noticed that their service has fallen off and is no where near "best in class." Everything from the website to call center response time has deteriorated. Performance is still good and costs are still low, so maybe the declining service is merely a function of the fact tens of millions of other investors have now found them.

It is also a very interesting and much more nuanced story behind the creation of the Vanguard Group. Bogle had just been fired from Wellington and it's a good question whether Vanguard would have ever been created at all had Bogle not been fired. In the early 60's, Bogle famously supported active management, under the pen name of a John B. Armstrong in the Financial Analyst Journal, he went on about the benefits of active management and shunned the idea that an unmanaged portfolio of stocks would do better than active management. It wasn't until later, perhaps originally out of necessity, when he famously converted to the larger than life father of indexing we know today. It's also very telling that no other asset manager since Vanguard has ever mutualized or copied their structure and I don't expect we'll ever see another company like Vanguard again. However there is no doubt that Jack Bogle has done more for the average investor than any other person hands down. Keep up the great content!
