Yep. Having a sister who keeps going from one horrible relationship to the next, I have no idea why she still puts so much faith in men and wants to get married, especially having grown up witnessing parental dysfunction. (Although it's our mother who's the aggressor but it still affected how my sister and I see relationships. I avoid relationships like the plague and I'm also sure I'm asexual, too. I'm not one bit interested. I definitely never, ever want kids, either. Our parents, by their example, taught us what NOT to do. I don't want to chance ending up with an abuser. What if I meet someone very kind, only for them to flip a switch and become abusive after we say "I do" and I'm stuck living with that? Nope. Not worth the risk).

@kofoblue3172 because it isn't just the dowery, it's the fact that this culture does not value women. There has to be a cultural change and sadly it won't be the women that get this change, it will have to come from the men. Until the men change how the value women it will always be like that.

I am from Canada. An Indian woman went to her parents for shelter from the domestic abuse. She was returned back to her husband 4 times. To a lot of Indian men, being chaste means a woman is respectable. But what about the discrimination , stalking, hatred, ab*se, harrassment that "chaste" men cause to our daughters? Purity lies in the heart not in our bodies. Please understand consent and respect of basic human dignity

Patriarchy truly is schizophrenic. It punishes women for not meeting the demands of men, that those men themselves made impossible in the first place. They call women and girls whose virginity was taken via a rape ‘damaged goods’, ‘impure’, ‘soiled’, they overwork and underappreciate their wives and then are surprised when she’s too stressed to play the role of the happy spouse. Such men are the literal cause of everything they don’t like about women. It’s truly sinister.

Very well said! Thank you for the sentence "purity lies in the heart, not in our bodies" - as the survivor of extreme sexual violence, I have always been seen as "filth" and have never found a husband. But I never felt dirty because what was done to me, was not my choice! Why should I feel dirty for something that another being forced on me? Sadly men think differently and so I have always been single. I'm not Indian but men all around the world think abuse survivors are "damaged goods".

When his parents came over from India they joined i beating the wife as did the daughters. She just took it, crying quietly. It was neighbours who called police and the guy was arrested. The police urged his wife to leave him but she refused and said she would never leave him no matter what. In the end he was planning on taking the family back to India where he could beat his wife and kids to his hearts content.

I'm Australian and the only reason I have ever objected to migration is the chauvinism and misogyny many continue to bring to my country... the damaging contact my unsuspecting daughters have had with these disgusting ideas and assumptions perpetuated by both men & women from other countries has changed the way that girls grow up... they were not allowed to grow-up as care-free as I was. Please do not impose these ideas onto me or my fellow Australians: we have fought and work too hard for too long to be exposed to archaic ideas. Damage to the local female community of Australians needs to be bought into the light when it comes to migration... most people don't discriminate because of skin colour... its these attitudes they dislike.
@mssiggypiggy

@user-uq9yo7if5g Actually, that just sounds racist. The vast majority of domestic abuse, violence against women, deaths and homelessness in Australia is driven by white Australian men - not by migrants. It's also unnervingly common in the Aboriginal community - and the underlying reasons for this come from white colonisation and mistreatment. Please don't pretend that you have no chauvinism or misogyny issues in the white community - your daughters are most likely to be exposed to it from white men, not migrants. There are so many issues with what you've written and the blame you're placing squarely on migrants. I'm not denying there are issues with refugees from certain countries - but I live in a predominantly white area and the issues and attitudes I see here are just as insane. There are absolutely issues to be addressed across the board, but they exist here with or without migrants.

Lots of them. So many, in fact, that the United Nations has recently deemed this unacceptable practice a newly-emerged form of violence against women and children. The Judges, as well as Child Protection Workers and other Court-Appointed Professionals, lie to squelch evidence of abuse, even when there are criminal convictions, and they get away with endangering children with abusers because they have immunity. They would do this because they wanted to abort the baby if it was a girl. Now this was happening in New York, and these ladies who would try to do that were educated Indian lady living in a free country. Doctor was Indian too and she wouldn't order the ultrasound before time and she would always say these people Find a way and they do ultrasound and then go for abortion. Even with financial independence, single women living alone are relatively vulnerable- it's just not the social norm in India. It's not just husbands the women are taken advantage of by, but the inlaws. After work, the wife has the house and the mother in law to take care of and be dictated to by. Single person households are less than 4% in India; perhaps at least 2 incomes are required to pay the rent and bills? What standard of education do people have access to in the rural areas? Are women discriminated against when they apply for graudate level jobs? I have no idea.

Documentaries like this are very important. They show how people are forced to live in barbarity while not necessarily being barbaric themselves. Its a system that is setup that traps them, and pretending it doesn't exist just to be accepting is so dangerous. It is especially inspiring to hear about how her husband supported her in a place where it was difficult. It shows how there are decent people everywhere, they just need the chance to be decent... and the indecent cannot be allowed to hide behind them. Im frankly amazed that this didnt get taken down.

This is worst in all religions of india all are of same mindset. The guys who think women are inferior shouldn't he think about his mother, is she not a woman. My mothers sister tried killing me when I was 9. I spent a week in the hospital. It got covered up. My mother cheated on my dad. She killed my sister as a baby. Tried to kill me like my sister, but my dad protected me. My brother doesnt know my dad is not his dad.

The anti-female mentality in India is an age-old issue. I’m a female, who had a 32 yo Indian guy as a Housemate recently. I’d rent to an Indian female, but NEVER to an Indian male again. He was Very insecure, w/ big ego, & His level of disrespect for me was shocking. He lied compulsively, has a defiance disorder, & couldn’t follow simple instructions, even when I went above & beyond for him. He keyed my car & more. India allows the extreme abuse of women, by not putting men in jail for their crimes & an Indian wife may be treated horribly by the in-laws. India also has the discriminatory caste system. The dowry tradition, which encourages crimes against women is illegal, but that is ignored.

@@JhilmilBasu And that in a nutshell is called culture. It is the same thing. Culture evolves over time. It is the Indian culture to feel that females are inferior to males. It is taught in the home, at school and in the streets. It is not judgemental to speak the truth. It is better in the cities where you have educated young men and women. In the city slums it is bad. In the rural areas in the millions of little villages it is bad.

The comments ( however 'in good faith ' made, reflect deep seated misogyny. A womans worth, tied to how useful she is. Another comment saying 'Indian women are beautiful and so, must be respected' - again, what a woman brings or is valued for. Women are human beings, with inherent value. Not relational, or because they are 'someones daughter' but, simply by virtue of our humanity. Not what she can provide, sexually, but simply because she is human. Not how 'pure ' she is or whatever creepy, social value she brings. Simply because she is a human being. Until such time as this viewpoint is espoused, nothing will change.
