In the first high-level joint declaration between India & China since the Ladakh stand-off began, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi issued a 5-point joint declaration after their talks in Moscow. I feel that to start with the Chinese objective was just to grab some territory and give a psychological blow to India. But they did not expect the escalation from Indian side. Now they have taken serious blow on Trade, lost a market to US and European companies and also lost 30 odd soldiers. If they go back now they will look like a fool, and that's why they won't go back a limited conflict is indeed very likely.

First and foremost India and China should not not fall into the trap of 'conflict'. That said, India needs to improve its economy through sheer hard work, create stronger political, diplomatic and economical alliances with like minded countries like Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Australia, USA, etc and ensure a strong military along its border with China. We should not forget that China views India as an adversary just like UK and Germany or USA and Russia or China and USA. We can deal with such situations only through a good match of economy, military and technological might. We have the resources and the intelligence. Do we have a political will? Are our 'babus' ready to work for the country?

Shekhar I have a question for you. What stops the two sides from deciding on a fixed border so that further disputes don't arise? I understand that 50-50 is not possible because some areas have a greater strategic advantage than others but why don't the two sides work on going 50-50 on strategic areas? Are we not able to decide on a fixed border because Pakistan lays claims to some of it?

One of the reasons for the present conflict is the statement by our HM in the parliament about Aksai chin which is under Chinese control for the last 50 years or more thus China wanted to tell India that it should not cross the red line hence the present conflict to prove it's strength because it's GDP is 5 times higher than India's GDP!

My personal view, which might be of no consequence, they are diverting the attention and the focus is on Arunachal. That would now be the next border dispute. India needs to think on a 360 degree border settlement and not look at just binary settlement. Let us wait and watch.

I think Shekhar ji forgot about Kargil war, where our DGMO Lt Gen Nirmal Chander Vij was talking to Pak DGMO regularly. That time fighting waa going on, now only re-adjustment is going on and fighting has not even begun. So it is not peculiar but normal in the context of India-China and India-Pakistan relationship.
