Indian Deities Worshipped in Japan

There is a very important bridge of culture joining the countries of India and Japan. In the words of HE Mr. Yasukuni Enoki, Former Ambassador of Japan, “It is very important for the Japanese to know that in the bottom of Japanese culture, Indian culture is very firmly imprinted”.
Buddhist and Hindu deities of India are worshiped by the people of Japan. The 5th century Sanskrit script is revered in Japan and its letters denoting different deities, are considered sacred by the Japanese.

am Japanese . Even in my small neighborhood, we have a small statue of hayagrīva at a corner of a road and cherish it as a goddes who keeps horses in good condition since hundreds years ago when we had no car and horses are only transport . I heared that even in India hayagriva is related to horses. I am Japanese but feel connected to India somewhat.

Very enlightening and in indeed inspiring documentary, although I knew about Japan's large population practices Buddhism, but never knew they also valued inheritance of Hinduism too, along with in the Sanskrit language and still up hold very dear to their day-to-days practice, in the religious trait which astonished. Luckily I born in the India hence Sanskrit and Vedas, and Pali languages and large part of Indus civilisation I learnt during my Primary and Secondary School, although Saraswati River NO longer exists but its trail can been seen from the Space, and proud to say that the Indus Civilisation goes back to 12,000 years as recent Ocean excavation near Gujraat (drawn city of Mathura) and East cost of Madurai, under the auspicious of Ocean Archaeology experts from England and US which clearly tells our forefathers; an inhabitant of Indus has seen and witnessed the very Ice Age and journeyed through the passage of very very long an Ancient time of the History of this Nation. The language of Vedas remain a Sanskrit or language of Gods (Mahabharata is concrete proof). I try to find an explanation in regard to spread of Indian culture and its value, and religion far flung more towards the direction of East side of Globe, perhaps; its is Vedas religious urge and practice to worship a rising Sun, hence many monks travelled towards direction of an East instead of West, but these just guess work.So in all senses Japan seems to be remain very ardent and lamenting friend to the Age old Indian Civilisation, great 'Saio-Nara'.

Bodhi Sena was a Tamil Budhist monk and was born in Madurai, Champaa kingdom was established by a Pandiya King Sri Maran, Tamil kings introduced Sanskrit in the Temples they built in the far east during their trade by sea. I heard that the name and version of "Vaishravana" evoluted into "Vishavana" in Thailand and "Bhishamon" all the way to Japan. But most of them don't know they worship Saraswati, and when most people in Japan do pray to Benzaiten (Saraswati, but they don't know it), they're just doing it out of habit. They have no concept of her. It's just ritualistic, like brushing your teeth. The average Japanese doesn't think much about God, religion, or spirituality at all. It's all just ritualistic. The visit shrines, without knowing anything about Shintoism. They get married in Christian ceremonies, with no knowledge of Christianity, and they have Buddhist funerals, knowing very little about Buddha or his words.

Every Shiva's or Shivan temple in Tamilnadu has Navagrahas shrine within and we write ✍️ Akshara or aksharam on copper papper mostly. we use Sanskrit mantras to write ✍️ and bring to our home , we do pujaas , we also belive that Akshara is also equal to gods. God Saraswati is lord of education, arts. God Lakshmi is lord of wealth. God Parvathi is god of braveness, war equipments here. God with peacock is god murugan . God Yema or yeman is lord of dead , hell. Edit: And still now we people's in Southern India do pujas , homam in Every temples or homes in Sanskrit . This rules are sets by our ancestors, king's before 1000 of years ago and still we practice.

I'm from a Brahmin family from India. I remember from the time I spent with my great grandmother, who would tell us stories from a purely Dharmic point of view. She would say that roughly the Kailasa mountain in the Tibetan Himalaya was the centre of the world and that the native people from its west were warlike, uncivilised, materialistic and barbarian, but the people from the East are internally civilised, humble and biologically spiritual. idea of moksha, reincarnation, karma a come from one land India. Countless sages thought and made these points. Buddha was great man(god) who built on those points and created something out of it. He rejected 2 forms of workship but still followed the remaining form of workship in hinduism. So all in all he just discontinued some customs he thought should not be part of society
