I have friends who are from West Bengal and they tell me that Kolkata is actually quite inexpensive and cheap in compare to any other place in India. And that's a good thing that it's cheaper

Recommendations for you Korbin: 1. Carry a portable spoon more than a fork. You can carry a fork as well but you will need a spoon for all the gravy / soupy stuff and Indian food is full of that. 2. Ignore any comments about eating with your hands. It's ok. To each our own. I am Indian and I have never been ok with eating rice with my hand. I always ask for a spoon and get glared at but it is what it is. 3. You would not need to carry your portable cutlery when you go to resteraunts as they have silverware. 4. There is street food available with filtered water in restaurants. Have that instead to avoid stomach issues. The trouble in street food is the water they use more than the ingredients. 5. You have a Pepto Bismol equivalent named Gelusil in all pharmacies. Keep that handy. 6. Carry hand sanitizer and wet wipes with you.

Come on - it is not exclusive to Mumbai. All Haldiram and Bikanerwala outlets across India maintain good hygienic standards and their pani puris are safe. Not only these chains, there are several local sweet shops that offer pani puri untouched by hands and are using purified if not bottled water.

I still remember when I was in school 4 pani puris would cost 1 Rupee and slowly by the time I reached college the standard pani puri cost was Rs.10 for 8 pani puris. Now, same number of pani puris cost Rs. 20. My reaction to that was "OMG! pani puris have become so expensive nowadays." Compared to what western countries pay for their food, I feel we are doing pretty okay.

In case you read it Rick/Korbin, Don't compare prices of things with Kolkata, things are dirt cheap in Kolkata. I have bought stuff expensive in Tier 3 cities compared to Kolkata. So don't get surprised if you find things on expensive side in other parts of country. Enjoy your trip.
