Indiana attorney general drops lawsuit over privacy of Ohio girl who traveled for abortion

Just three days after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, an Indiana doctor got a call about a 10 year old girl from Ohio who had been raped and was pregnant. The pregnancy was three days past the six week deadline for abortion in Ohio, so the Indiana doctor agreed to help the girl. The Indiana attorney general fought to suspend her medical license and sued her hospital. The suit has just been dropped. Dr. Bernard joins Chris Hayes to discuss the current state of reproductive rights in the country.

The 6 week abortion ban is NOT active in Ohio. This is still being litigated. The restriction is currently up to 22 weeks (fetal viability). The reason (in part) it is soooo hard for many Americans to get thier head around a pregnant 10 year old is most of the "anti" population hit puberty at 12 (or a sister etc did) because no one ever told them that other demographics actually (with alarming regularity) hit it at 10 years old. Some people I have talked to were horrified that my school started sx-ed at age 8. Why? Because if they started sx-ed at 10 years old (normal for other demographics), 50% of my classmates would already be menstruating and it would be too late for the other 50% because our moms told us at age 8-9.... We need the US population (all genders) to wake up, grow up, and quit being squeamish (and ignorant) about menstruation.

It wasn't even mass enough to get residents of the town impacted to change how they vote. Newtown Ct wasn't mass enough to change views on gun issues either. Wildfires that were mostly small, and definitely infrequently heard-of events are now annual blazes impacting multiple parts of North America for weeks on end, and it isn't mass enough to change views on climate. Alterations in home insurance rates across broad swaths of the US coast doesn't sink in either. Individuals sitting at home, consuming their "information" via the likes of Fox and Truth Social will never experience those mass events. Jon Stewart once did a piece on how Fox spent 2 years talking about Benghazi but then entirely ignored the report with the real facts in spite of that report originating from a Republican-led committee. Fox even had the committee chair for an interview without talking about that. There is no formula for getting through. Every inconvenient piece of reality can be explained away, replaced by a conspiracy, ignored, or shouted down into silence. The left isn't perfect, but it doesn't have such an intricately-connected and self-reinforcing structure for re-interpreting reality. There will never be an event bad enough to change what we have witnessed for over a decade.... arguably for a lot longer. But the metastasis became obvious and undeniable after 2008.

They'd insist the person would change their mind and sue (which did happen) and the person had to wait until they were older or had permission from their spouse, et cetera. There's been a movement to sterilize as a life choice, so its getting easier as the old bigots die off. But yes Project 2025 would take us back even further.

My daughter is 20. She is trying to get a sterilization procedure even now. So is her best friend (same age). Gen Z is opting out of parenthood entirely rather than be forced into it unwilling. This is what their legislation has brought about.

I live in NE Ohio and have for most of my life. I never thought I would see the day when Ohioans are going to Indiana to escape hard-right GOP policies and laws. I am proud that Dems and the women of OH shot down the 6 week ban through a ballot initiative issue, mind you by 2:1. I remember watching the debate in the state senate when Indiana was passing this disaster of a law. An advocate for law was point blanked asked by a Democratic lawmaker if a 10 year old girl should be forced to go through the process of pregnancy, regardless of the fact that the body is not yet mature enough to give birth, and he said yes. It was just unbelievable. He was essentially ok for a child to sacrifice their life for his idiotic ideology.
