In regards to the small boat at the beginning, in old expeditions in south America they would carry their boats with them across land to the points where they expected to need them again later on. Not sure how well that area was mapped out, but there are a ton of rivers and such in South America.

I don't notice a tiny flashing icon on screen for less than half a second when a game autosaves so when a game doesn't offer manual saves, only autosaves, I never have any idea if I quit now will I lose 20 seconds of progress or will I have to redo the last half hour when I get back. so much anxiety over the years, because devs couldn't be bothered.

The problem I have with ray tracing is the overemphasized shadows. There's no accounting for light scattering, which means that anything not in LOS to a light source is overly dark and looks terrible to my eyes. A tree in direct sunlight doesn't mean you can't see the nooks and crannies that are blocked from the sun by the tree's geometry. It makes the world look more fake, not more realistic.

Great stuff. They have absolutely nailed it. One of the most pleasant surprises of 2024 gaming. Yes, we have reached the point of incremental graphical fidelity as a lopsided tradeoff to major performance hits, even on Jingles strength rigs. I wouldn't be able to play this game as Ray Tracing isn't worth the tradeoff to 30fps with my set up. Shame, but a Jingles playthough comes a close second. Ps: I hope there's an opportunity to return to those University environments. There's always something so damn appealing with them as a game setting, especially with this lighting and detail.

Path Tracing in that game, from what I've seen so far, is one of the better implementations. The second you turned it on, you went from having shadows block the whole character in front of you, to it having different levels of shadow. Always though RT was a bit of snake oil, given how it was 2/3 years ago, but now we're slowly seeing some titles with actual impactful implementations of it. Of course 9/10 gamers will still prefer smoother frames, to super sexy eye candy, but that's another discussion.

if you rely on raytracing alone for you lighting you can skip a whole lot of manual lighting setup in a game, so this is not surprising. If done correctly with raytracing, everything "just works" where when you don't have raytracing available you have to really tweak every scene so it looks "correct" how the light interacts with surfaces, where raytracing needs only attention to texturing and light sources.

the lighting environment in which you tried to showcase/test the difference in full pathtracing and less was not indicative of what full path tracing can achieve. it is more a matter of extra reflections i.e. path of the light. if the path is not influenced much i.e. matt/natural materials there is not much further that the light path goes..... try it again in a bit more urban environment or when there is water or other reflectrive materials and localised lightsources
