17-year-old Grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju scripted history by becoming the youngest man to win the prestigious Candidates tournament and earn the right to challenge for the World Championships crown later this year. The teenager from India finished as the sole leader at the end of a gripping 14-round Candidates tournament in Toronto, Canada. Gukesh will face Ding Liren, the reigning world champion, for the world title later in the year.

Gukesh at age of 17 creates history, becomes youngest ever chess player to win FIDE Chess Candidates. Only Indian after Viswanathan Anand to win Candidates tournament. Many experts & players including Magnus Carlsen was expecting Nakamura or Caruana to win, but playing in such a strong field, when the stakes were high and at the highest level in high pressure situation, winning Candidate is really phenomenal. This is a Huge Moment for Indian Chess. Gukesh will now challenge Ding Liren for World Chess Championship Congratulation Gukesh.

I was awake the whole night and was rooting for Gukesh. Ian and Fabi match was a real nail biting one. All of our players perfomed amazingly, Pragg was solid he finished with 7/14 , vidit defeated Nakamura twice in a row and that are the only two games which Naka lost helping Gukesh in the long run. Vaishali winning 5 back to back games is a world record for any major FIDE tournament and Humpy staying solid witj 7.5/14. Our candidates were simply amazing ❤️. In future we mign see both open and female world champion from India.

Your "Mhm", "oh" and "ah" isn't gonna add any value to grandmasters thoughts when it comes to chess. Just let Viswanathan speak, you can talk nonsense later, after he hangs up! For me, this was an expected outcome in the FIDE Candidates 2024, considering GM Fabiano Caruana and maintaining high hopes for GM Praggnanandhaa and GM Gukesh D. Why? Because the 2018 World Chess Championship (WCC) still lingers in my mind, and Caruana deserved to win it, just as he did against GM Nepomniachtchi in the last round, Round 14. Additionally, the other two Indians were exceptionally formidable in classical chess in the past year. The highlight was Gukesh surpassing the legendary six-time Chess Oscar awardee, pentuple World Chess Champion, Padma Vibhushan Super GM Shri Shri Vishwanathan Anand in classical chess rating on August 3, 2023, and becoming the number one Indian chess player. This phenomenon lasted for 35 years, since GM Anand became India's first chess grandmaster in the year 1988. © Sandip Ray Chaudhury 22nd April, 2024.
