Could You Be Autistic and Never Knew? Well in this first World Autism Awareness Week 2021 video, I put some questions to you which relate to the experiences of autistic people to see if you resonate to them. Often people have stereotyped idea about what autism is so I thought that this video might help those understand autism and to see if you could have undiagnosed autism.

Hi Hannah! It's very common to feel like that way. Even though I've been diagnosed for years now, I get that feeling too. It does come back from time to time but I think it's just about knowing that you're valid and what you feel is valid. That's ultimately is what matters. I hope you get your results soon and hope you're well ☺️

@@IndieAndy Thanks for responding! It's always good to know I'm not the only one who feels this way. I'll use that to shush my autisme imposter syndrome :D I think or hope that the validation of having a diagnosis will help as well. I'm 28, just like you, but only now getting help so I know it's gonna take some time to unlearn a lot of unhelpful thought patterns.

Well I've been obsessed the past few months with finding if I'm autistic, and I really don't wanna stop talking abt it and get really frustrated that no one takes me seriously or understands my obsession, because it really makes sense, so maybe that shows something😅😂

ф The past few weeks I've been obsessed with find how high am I in the spectrum, and the only person that I can talk to (my mother, because quarantine and because just my family knows I have autistic characteristics) when I tried to speak her about it said "Why are you so obssesed in finding that?, That's like trying to find how advanced you're in a chronical patology!, We know you have REALLY low autism, and probably you're just faking it without knowing it!", Well, if I had a chronical patology I will obviously want to know how bad it is, but the point is, Why is bad to want to know that?, Is like she thinks finding out means something to change, nope, not for knowing my level in the spectrum I will magically stop trying to improve my social skills and my control of impulses, and not for not knowing it I will magically stop being sound sensitive. ф

Hi, similar thing now happening with me as I have recently had a huge spike in my anxiety and lots of these traits that I have always had have become very obvious. Now my mum has told me that she had always thought I could be autistic but had never been to a doctor about it because she didn’t want it to hinder my education or lower my chances at things when I have always been highly academic. My closest friend is also studying psychology and has apparently been ‘studying’ me since we met and is convinced that I am autistic. I’m now obsessed with finding out if I am autistic since the Google tests believe it to be highly likely but I hate to imply that I am to anyone around me and feel awkward or rude covering my ears or exiting stressful or loud/noisy/busy situations because it isn’t diagnosed. I never like to ask about it though because one time I did I got completely shut down by a person that only at the time knew me on a surface level to be clever and ‘normal’, but then grew to find my behaviour difficult and a bit strange, so I tend not to get the recharge time I need after busy days that are out of my comfort zones. This leads them to get worried about me when I shut myself in my room all day with headphones on a a sudoku book and I then have to spend my time fending them off and convincing them that I am ok

Feeling manipulated... Jesus, I’ve never actually realised how much I feel like I’ve been through that until you pointed it out! I do feel like I get “used” and “taken advantage of” sometimes, especially by classmates and teachers

It's such a weird thing because I didn't realise it until someone pointed it out to me. I mean there was a time where I had a classmate asking for money in trade for some trendy thing going round the school at the time (can't remember what it was). It's fair to say I didn't get anything from it. Though small in scale, it's something that can be bad consequences 😭

@@IndieAndy I can relate to that a lot. I used to have a “friend” who always asked me to buy lunch for them. I always bought it for them because I didn’t want to seem mean but it just got to the point where I’d had enough and I started staying away form that person. I started to realise they weren’t a proper friend they were just taking advantage of me

I am happy to have been diagnosed at age 23! My mom had apparently tried to have me diagnosed before I started school but my presentation seemed too subtle for professionals back then. I can think of a million autistic traits I had in elementary and high school, but I thought I could make myself more normal when I went to college. So that’s when I started masking. Autism eventually became a special interest since I found it so relatable and felt so much empathy toward autistic people!I finally made connections between everything and got diagnosed when I was starting my master’s degree. I am here to remind everyone that self-diagnosis is valid :)

It sucks how many people can't be diagnosed because they can't cope with the waiting time or afford a private diagnosis. And it sucks these people can't get any kind of help or validation because of the same reason.

Thanks for sharing this. As someone that is very close to self-identifying as autistic (my partner is convinced I am after I showed them the online tests, my behavior map, videos of others with ASD, etc.), these videos do help with this stage of trying to figure things out. Nearly every single item you went over describes me to a 'T'. The only one that doesn't is exploding when I'm upset as I've learned to internalize my feelings quite a bit and I shutdown instead. I have only blown up a handful of times in my life and its been at home alone when I'm not masking. I think the only thing that's stopping me from saying, "Yes, I have ASD" is that I've never seen a therapist (have one scheduled in just a few days time though!) and I know I have trauma. I just need them to rule out that PTSD is the cause of everything (which I've rigorously compared the two and I feel like ASD describes me MUCH better) as the two can overlap as far as symptoms/behaviors.

Of course you will be nervous because you're unsure of how they will react. But maybe starting with someone who you feel will be open to talking about it would be the best thing to do. Acting differently at home vs out in public. I flapped my hands a lot when I was a kid and once the teasing ramped up considerably in middle school I trained myself to not do it in public. I'll stim more at home where I feel more comfortable and relaxed. And I definitely resonate with the gullibility/manipulation as I have had "friends" and acquaintances who would get things out of me and I was none the wiser until it was pointed out to me.

I would consider myself autistic, but I haven’t gotten diagnosed yet. I would try to get diagnosis for ASD, but girls are a lot less likely to get the right diagnosis(the system is racist, sexist and ageist so oftentimes people self-diagnosed). Even if I did consider myself autistic, I have an intense fear that people may harass me for it and if I explain they wouldn’t listen. Ever. I feel really called out by this video because months before I’ve been doing research for autism I struggled to find out what was so different about me. I remember trying to mask it for a really long time until I had some sort of burnout, like, a REALLY depressive state about a couple of years ago(and even tried to fake my own happiness because people didn’t like me for being depresses and my severe anxiety). Someone did suspect that I was autistic before I have myself. So for the past months I’ve showed a lot of interest in researching autism because it is the most likely cause of what is making me different from other people. In conclusion, I will still hesitate to consider myself autistic. I don’t think I should because I don’t mean to be offensive, but I don’t know if I should really.

I never know what to do with this. Most of that fits. My family and friends think I am. I think I probably am. My son is diagnosed. It all seems likely. But I don’t know what the diagnosis would do. My mum worried it might affect like work, health insurance etc. I probably need a bit of support with certain things but a diagnosis won’t help with the feeling of being overwhelmed. I’m trying to type this and my son is talking at me and it’s making my head spin trying to concentrate on both. If a diagnosis could stop things like that happening then I’d go for it guns blazing! I’m very conflicted about it all.

Aww no I get what you mean. I think it just comes down to whether it would be something you could benefit from. Do you have sensory issues?: Yes Do you find it difficult going to social events because of that sensory issues?: Depending, I remember that in the new year party of my family in 2019-2020 my uncle wouldn't stop just putting the music in the highest volume every time I started dancing, talking, or even just eating something, causing to me to run inmediatly to my younger uncle's room (younger than the other uncle, not younger than me) with my cousin and covering my ears, then my uncle will laugh and try to stop me to go thinking it was fake, my mother was really upset and talked to him and I just wanted to punch him in the stomach and then laugh saying his pain was fake (I didn't, but I wanted to) Do you notice the small details?: Yes Have you felt like an alien or an outsider: I am an alien... Just kidding, but, I don't know if it counts, but I joke with my family and friends about being an alien, and I almost every time walking in a group feel like if I was not part of the group because the other people start slowly to walk faster than me and then close with their arms and start not talking to me if they aren't making group decissions Do you have specific interests?: Um, Yes?, Like everyone else? Do people say you speak in a monotone way?: My mother always tell me to stop talking as a robot when I record a voice message or talk to people that I don't know well, but I just can't control it and my mother doesn't understand it. And that "You don't express with your voice the way yo feel" HELL YES, when I try to greeting someone (for a birthday or something that they did for example) I always end thinking it sound like if I was making it for compromise, but I'm not, I truly feel happy for the other person Are you always setting reminders for yourself?: Yes, I do, I sometimes put reminders for little things like talking to someone, but my mother thinks that to set an alarm you need to have the need to do something important, and if I put more that 2 alarms a day she tells me I'm gonna live stressed that way Have you got "Bad habits": Yes?, Like everyone else?, Things like eating my dead skin or (more recent) bringing my Rubik Cube everywhere and just flip one layer compulsively (and resolving it over and over while someone is talking to me) Do you feel overwhelmed by people emotions?: If that means that I feel exactly what the other person feels, then yes Do you act/behave differently at home?: Um, yes?, like everyone else? (3:18 I do that a lot, and since the moment i learned how to finger snapping I do it all the time, and I also do the 3:24) Do you lack skills?: YES Do you have strict routines?: I'm not allowed to set more than 2 alarms a day, good luck stablishing a routine with that! Find it tough to changing tasks?: No Do you find it hard to keep friendships etc? I'm losing my best friends because I almost don't call them because I don't need talking to them every week to continue being friends, but they do You wonder yourself why can't people say what they mean?: Sometimes, bug I also find my self not saying what I mean You have preferred methods to talk?: Yes Do you always feel need to "Fit in"?: Yes Are you filtering what you say, what to do?: Constantly Do you "explode" on people when feeling stressed etc?: Yes, working on that Are you gullible/easy to manipulate?: Yes, I passed a lot of years being manipulated to think that if I let people borrow (Thing that I have) they will be my friends, and if I don't they wouldn't, and a lot of other things Do you relate to this questions?: Yes

Hello. I am informing myself about autism since like 1 week and I don't know if my "feeling different" is coming from me/ naturally or it's just because people always told me I am weird and sent me already to a psychologist with 7 years old. So I don't know If I would like to know "what's wrong with me" if I didn't have these experiences.

I want to know how the hell you're supposed to know if some of these things are 'unusual'. I love routine and like to plan pretty much everything I want to 'do'. Definitely not a spontaneous person.. but I don't have a clue if anyone else would think this is odd because I don't talk to people about my daily plans! Conversations never get that far. I definitely never felt like I fit in, and when I try to, people often find it funny! What did _I_ do wrong that other people get right effortlessly?! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

I actually feel more comfortable to stim in public bc I feel like if I do it at home my parents will judge me :( (except when I see someone stare at me and I force myself to stop)

Does the DSM 5 count as a source that is credible enough? XD

Of course but the only thing with that is that someone's traits might be autism but it also could be something else. But using the DSM and other resources gives someone a well rounded view of things.

@@IndieAndy If my autistic traits are also traits of other mental illnesses, would that make me any less autistic? They are still traits that I live with every day, you know what I mean? And a friend who studies psych has suggested to me that my anxiety and depression likely stemmed from being an autistic child who didn't understand anything that was going on around me and was picked on because of these traits.
