Srimati Indira Gandhi will stand as one of the greatest statesman of South Asia. She had been a brave heart who could defy all odds to stand for humankind. Her commitment for secularism and other human values is beyond comparison, so far Indian context is concerned. We Bangladeshis always remember her with deep respect. She not only fed our ten million people in their dire situation, she gave us proper honor for what we had been fighting for centuries. On her thirty ninth death anniversary we again bow our head to this great lady. Dear Leader, Priyodorshini Indira.take may salute and heartfelt love!

IG's gift to INDIA was Emergency, that lead to emergence of so many young politicians (young then) Arun Jaitley,Sushma Swaraj, Nitish, Lalu etc. In any case her grand son & grand daughter will sooner or later realize that taking a nasty left turn on economics has it's costs. One of the reasons UPA lost so badly is because they messed up with economics. Do whatever but messing up on economy is strict no no. People will be really tough on them. Check out states after states wherever people see a mess in economics they throw out the regime. WB & BIHAR is an exception (even that will change). The ill effects of her economic decisions are being paid for even now.

Indicate Gandhi was one of the worst Prime Minister. She doubled down on Nehru’s socialism. It was Indira who incorporated socialism into the the Indian constitution. She nationalized bank. It has taken the Modi govt. to finally set the banking on a sound system. During her time the congress party and Indira illegally transferred large sum of money from the banks. There was a famous incident when this person called a bank and imitating in Indira Gandhi voice ask for a transfer of large sum of money, which the bank promptly delivered. A culture of corruption and nepotism created by Gandhi is still a burden in India. Not to mention so many state govt. elected govt. were overthrown and president rule imposed on her whims. We are still recovering from her bad economic policies. If at all she realized that she had make a change and mice away from socialism late in her reign, it was too little and too late for millions of Indians. The years between Nehru through Indira will go down as the wasted years, and the lost of two generations for Indians. The only positive thing that happened during her rule was the liberation of Bangladeshi Desh.

Yes , in posterity, Mrs Gandhi did commit a lot of wrong political disasters including raising Bhindranwale to neutralise the Akali dal who in turn into a Frankenstein himself and eventually had to pay with the supreme sacrifice . I think its fair to say that without Sardar Patel's vision, India had a real chance of crumbling away later. But it is also fair to say that Nehru's at times naïve idealism and Indira's extreme personification of a queen saved India a lot of damage people like Majumdar, JP and Morarji Desai could've inflicted.

Shekhar is trying to justify Indira's socialism by saying that 1974, she started changing. The issue is this- Bank nationalization was aright decision in 1969 but what was wrong was it continued too far and now new private banks were allowed to come up. Same thing happened with other PSEs and we now have huge investments in PSEs earning hardly any return, if not huge losses. Thankfully, Air India is now out of the Govt ownership but we have so many cobwebs to clear. If it takes 40 years to clear your cobwebs of socialism and continuing, then one must note the strong grip of the socialism on our economic policies. Bottom line is - we can have any economic policy for a while but we must be able to tune it to the emerging scenarios and in the interest of the nation.

Why would the left forever discard the birth anniversary of a great leader to observe the death of another great leader. There are ways to deal with the fact they fall on the same day, the morally superior, more logical and intelligent left should be able to find a way to do both. Why even make it a left vs right issue and play into the hands of BJP. If one cuts the branch on which they sit, there's on one else to blame.

Her initial years on economy were too bad. Remember 98% tax? Later it improved. First reason was that Sanjay Gandhi became the defacto PM. Second was in emergency public sector efficiency went up. So, on the whole her performance on economy was below average. I felt ashamed and let down when Sonia Gandhi championed Food Security Bill in 2014. Gandhi, Nehru, Indira; all said that removing poverty was first priority. But after 67 years of independence we had failed to provide food security. This cannot be forgotten, or forgiven, or left out in assessment.
