Individual Speaker Calibration Vs Combined Average Response

I wanted to make a video explaining the differences between Individual Speaker Calibration vs. Combined Average Response with 2 speakers. It makes speakers sound smooth with no brittle harshness or overbrightness. I haven't really used a single speaker calibration since Audyssey added it to MultEQ-X, but it's made me realize that it's essential to get the best sound. I appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos. However, I've noticed that they tend to be a bit lengthy and sometimes veer off-topic. It would be great if you could maintain more consistency between your different videos and provide clearer outlines, especially when detailing settings in REW. Hey, today i decided to try your method, because you are so inthusiastic about it🙂 But in the first step i didn't reach your results in the 'Trace arithmetic'-thing (Target over speaker) at all and i was very dissapointed and wanted to give up; but then i remembered one thing from one of the OCA-videos where he was also is using 'Target divided by each speaker'; but MAGNITUDE-Division (absolute value divison; this one with the []; it‘s a new REW feature!) After using this 'absolute division', i got the similars results like you in your video(s), and it looks really good; and tomorrow i will check if it also 'sounds' good! I just want let you know this, because you always say: 'We are all learning'; although i don't know what i'm doing and what really happens, but now i'm happy it works!

Hi, it really sounds great; so thank you very much for your advices and your vidoes🙂 But there is one thing i don't understand and i also don't know what it means: My system is 1 subwoofer, Front- and Front Heightspeakers, Surround- and Surround Heightspeakers (all from nubert [germany]; i don't have any Back-Surround speakers) and a AVC-X4800H Denon-Receiver, i use MultEQ-X and i wanted Auro3D to work. BUT whenever i measure in REW (OCA-Sweeps) the measured level of the 4 surround-speakers is about 10 to 12dB less than the front-speakers; and this is the case after sending the 'NO-calibration.mqx' ('Reset-Configuration') to the AVR and also after your method is applied and sended to the AVR!! Any idea what's going wrong or is there any setting that's not okay, because when i measure with MultEQ-X and import these measurements into REW, they are all at the same level!!??

I would try and check to see if any dynamic range control settings are turned on when Atmos is active. Need to check the audio setting in the surround parameters and Audyssey on the receiver. I would make sure everything is turned off. My sweeps are at normal volume. Make sure the volume to all channels is zero when you calibrate with everything turned off and see if that fixes it. That seems strange to me.

100%. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out why you chose to average the results of two speakers but I see now ‘you have seen the light!”. Just kidding but seriously I do think EQing each speaker separately is absolutely the preferred approach (different speakers have different placement and are subject to different room modes). Incidentally, did you have a chance to read my reply to your response to my initial comment regarding your video pertaining to the LFE channel?

So this weekend I took a stab at trying this method. Just did my mains and the results were really good. Thank you. Curious what method you use post cal to level match everything? I used the SACT disc and SPL meter. Hoping to get all the other speakers done during the holidays(7.2.4)....then the SUB which will be most time consuming.

are you still using the sound files off the spatial audio disk with the RTA function in REW or are you using the other guys sweep's and if so how are you handling the atmos speakers?

Right now I'm currently not, but they are the same as the disc I've found. The biggest thing is making sure the sub channel is correct and I don't think the RTA provided enough accuracy when measuring the sub that way, but I may test it, Matthew.

Would be curious to see your acoustical measurements in addition to the frequency response. Stuff like RT60 Decay (not RT60) and Wavelet (an option under spectrogram). Perhaps some acoustical treatments would reduce the amount of EQ necessary and thus power and improve sound as well. Likely a bigger difference than a new receiver cuz you’ve already got enough power with your current

All their Anthony Grimani interviews are a gold mine as well for learning about treatments (see their room acoustics playlist). They have some detailed rew tutorials too

@@hdmoviesource 280 is quite good as far as I know. For comparison, my room is untreated with hard floors and my RT60 Decay is about 600. There’s a noticeable liveness to the sound which can be fatiguing at louder volumes. I’d be thrilled if I could get mine down to the 300s. Going too far below 300 can make the room sound too dry and anechoic though

I already have the calibrated microphone from Audyssey and am still waiting for the Audyssey software to become cheaper on Black Friday. You need REW and a Microphone like a UMIK1 to measure everything and do it yourself. Then you need MultEQ-X app. REW is free software, so you just need a decent Mic.

I dont think it will work as well but "OCA" channel he has a video about using the audessey mic with REW and provided a calibration file. But I havent tried it. Just get the umik1, easier and better, but if your feeling adventurous you can try it lol@@danmaier2077

Measured with the UMIK2 today. I'm shocked at how much better it EQd vs the UMIK1. The sound its absolutely amazing now Adam.

Thank you. What was helpful with the spreadsheet is knowing to set column A to numbers with 6 decimal places. From that it’s easy to take our own exports, find/replace in notepad, copy to csv, zero out column b values, then copy back into the main text file. Easy to setup a zero point where you want to drop EQ.
