“Nasi Padang” is a bit of a misnomer, that’s just the way they call this style of food in Malaysia. Padang is the capital of the Indonesian province of West Sumatra, so the actual Nasi Padang has to be of the food traditions of the city. This restaurant here specifically uses the name “Nasi Kapau” on their restaurant, which means they are from Bukittinggi, the second most important city in West Sumatra. Nasi Padang and Nasi Kapau has little differences between them, but yeah, Malaysians wouldn’t understand this. That being said, this restaurant looks legit because they have gulai tunjang (tendon curry) and ayam pop (twice cooked chicken), the latter being difficult to find in Malaysia. You’ve made the right decision with your plate! And the beef skin crackling is what we call karupuak jangek in Minangkabau language. Indonesians like to dip these in curries and gravies that come with Minangkabau (West Sumatran) dishes. Hope you’ll get to visit West Sumatra and the rest of Indonesia for a more authentic experience. Cheers!

wow thank you so much for the information. I would love to visit West Sumatra, in fact. I have never visited Indonesia, so it is something I would love to do

@@hungrytoexplore Please do visit us. The thing with Indonesia is that it’s very regional. So in West Sumatra you should have rendang, in Bali you should try bebek betutu (smoked duck), in Manado ragey (pork skewers) is a must-eat, gohu (local ceviche) is the favorite in Maluku, and so on. Do let me know if you’re visiting. It helps to have a local with you so you wouldn’t go to Jakarta and think that Nasi Padang is a local dish.

@@hungrytoexplore I subscribed by the way, and I hope you get to go to my FAV place JAKARTA INDONESIA!!! Unbelievable food there, gotta try the NASI PADANG where they put about 20 plates on your table and you just pay for whatever you eat. If you and me went we would only pay around $10-$12 dollars American and we'd be STUFFED...
