My bunnies live outdoors in a big shed, and they have an outdoor area of 10 square meters. It’s safely built with sturdy walls and roofs both outside and inside. I tried to keep them free range in my room one winter and they hated it. They got bored and depressed, I could literally see the life disappear from them as the weeks went on. They obviously had lots of space, hides, tunnels, forage, hay, toys, dig boxes, etc. They would spend most of their time just sleeping curled up and hiding, and almost never played. Outdoors they run, jump around, dig, forage, and sleep stretched out. They got much happier and feel safer outdoors. I would never want to give them a humanized environment unless they genuinely preferred it. :)

Haha I had the opposite experience with my very first bunny - my mom wanted him outside (too many chewed wires and she hated having a litter box inside) but when we finally had made him a home outside, he broke out of it and was staring into the living room at the glass door, begging to come back in 😂😢 my brother was watching tv when suddenly he noticed my rabbit watching him longingly from the backyard and let him back in cuz it looked like that's what he wanted ❤ he didn't even run away, which was shocking to me 🤯 he then lived indoors for the rest of his life with us 😊 I loved him so much

My bunny, max, has some severe behavioral problems that prevent him from having a bunny partner. We tried bonding him through the SPCA, but he was extremely territorial, aggressive, and upset. He is a rescue, and was (most likely) bred on a meat farm (himalayan/californian we think), so we aren't sure if something happened but according to the rescue, he's never done well with other rabbits. I completely agree that if you are going to get a bunny, get a pair, because usually they tend to be much happier

You do realize you answered your own question right lol y'all are so cute. A rabbit adapts to its own habitats surounding, and makes its own way of life it's the life mind and body of the rabbit you can continue to guess what makes the rabbit do or feel anything but honestly you don't know and that is ok but if you really want to learn about that get a book a vet a specialist and put all of that hard time spent actually understanding some of the factual information you wanted to really know and wondered about and then you can say my rabbit feels...... I put my bunny on harness when we go outside. I live in ireland so we do not have raccoons or anything like that and bonbon has all vaccinations. So even after I watched your video I still thought harnesses were ok... until I brought my bun to socialize at my bffs house. He was not in a harness bc he hates them, thank Source.. that saved his spine. My BFF has a 30 lb dog who was locked upstairs with her parents. Things were going well in her dining room. We were playing w my bun taking pics etc. until suddenly her mom called out, "Tofu needs to use the bathroom!" & immediately after, her mom let the dog out. 💀 Tofu is a really sweet dog but hyperactive and ran up to my bun, which totally FREAKED him out. Hoppy leaped high in the air to get away, knocking off one of the leaves of my friend's poinsettia..... We left shortly after that. I promised my bun never again. 💀 The only dogs he'll meet will be my service dog, unless he's safe in his stroller. But also I decided against harnesses in that moment. If my bun had been in his harness, his back would have broken if I'd been holding onto it. The whole thing happened so fast that I wouldn't have let go of the harness in time. Harnesses are a DEFINITE NO. Rabbits are not dogs with strong bones. They're more akin to birds when it comes to fragility.

I found your opinion on covered litter boxes very interesting. I agree they should never be used with cats. However, typically cats have a much dustier litter that would totally cause respiratory issues in such a confined space. Rabbits on the other hand, have litters that are not as dusty (if at all). Unless you're using an unsafe or majorly dusty litter, my opinion is that your bun would be fine with a covered litter box.

I would like to point out not every rabbit *wants* a companion. My rabbit is older, around 8, and we tried pairing him up at the shelter eith numerous different options and every time he was just aggressive. He's never been around other rabbits besides for bonding either. It is better for him to now to just be a single rabbit (where he gets groomed occasionally by my cats 😂) and not put that stress on him that bonding was causing. So yes, in most cases it is better to have a companion but sometimes it just never works out. I view it kinda like getting married- not every person wants a partner, but a lot of people still do. And that doenst mean they never want to have social interactions with anyone else and be happy.

@@sheawyatt5556 I completely agree with you. I thought my rabbit would actually be aggressive towards other rabbits since he’s been alone for a year, but he actually is the submissive one believe it or not. Definitely agree with almost everything you said. I will never take my buns outside and it's so hard to try and explain that to people. Also, with harnesses, why take the risk? I feel like it is a selfish risk because there is no benefit to the rabbit, I feel like the owners want to show off in some way.

SORRY BUT THAT IS NOT BODY LANGUAGE ITS JUST THE THINGS A RABBIT DOES BS THEY ARE A RABBIT. NOW YOU SPECIFICALLY ASKED FOR STRESS SIGNALS..... THE MAIN ONE TO LOOK FOR WHEN A RABBIT IS SCARED OR STRESSED WOULD BE TO LOOK AT THEIR BREATHING PATTERN. WRONG! YOU ARE LOOKING AT THEIR EYES!!!!!!!! A RABBIT THAT IS STRESSED HAS A VERY RAPID HEART RATE, WHEN THEY ARE SCARED THEY BECOME VERY STILL, EARS OR UP AND ALERT AND THEIR EYES ARE BOTH POINTED FORWARD AS IF THEY ARE IN A DAYS AND THEY ARE BULGING OUT OF THEIR HEAD. IF YOU SEE THIS. PICK UP YOUR RABBIT PUT THEM BY YOUR HEART AND PET THEM DO NOT BOUNCE THEM AROUND ON YOUR LAP DO NOT TRY TO FEED THEM HELP THEM GAIN SELF CONTROL BY LOWERING THEIR HEART RATE. AFTER THAT THEN DO YOUR OWN THING FOR YOUR OWN RABBIT, KNOW ONE KNOWS YOUR RABBIT BETTER THAN YOU. IF YOU GET WORRIED ABOUT THEM GO TO YOUR VET. IF YOU HAVE OTHER QUESTIONS BECAUSE YOU BOUGHT A RABBIT AND DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THEM DONT JUMP ONLINE AND ASK GOOGLE OR WATCH THESE VIDEOS THAT DONT SPECIFY WHERE THEY ARE GETTING ALL OF THIS INFORMATION BC THIS 101 RABBIT AT LEAST INFORMS EVERYONE THAT THIS IS JUST HER OPINION NOT BASED OFF OF REASEARCH. A tip for weight gain in rabbits: my bunny also lost weight (a significant amount, actually) and she also was not eating the things that would help her gain weight faster. My vet recommended giving her critical care 4 times a day according to her weight (her normal weight is ~4.5 lbs), and she’s actually gained about half of the weight that she lost back in 10 days. The issue is I can’t really keep giving her critical care 4 times a day for the rest of her life, so I’m not quite sure yet about how to maintain her weight. Once she is back to her normal weight I plan on asking the vet about next steps, and I can post an update when that happens!

Critical care four times a day? What is a four times a day critical care diet plan? My first thought would be getting another opinion or see if your rabbits digestive track is stabilized enough for it to maintain the weight on it's own. Normally that type of diet is only for a short period of time. You should not be continuing this diet for a life long schedule for your rabbit
@ZeroG151
@ZeroG151 3 жыл бұрын
@@umtheelementofconfusion I definitely am not planning on keeping my bunny on critical care for the rest of her life, which is why I said I would update my comment about how I will be weaning her off of it and back to a normal, healthy diet once I speak to my vet again. I know it’s not a common approach for putting weight on a rabbit, but my vet is an exotics specialist and is familiar with my rabbit’s situation. Her gut was not the reason for her weight loss, so her gut is healthy. I’d rather not get into all of the medical information because it’s a bit complicated, but she was not putting on weight fast enough, even if I gave her unlimited pellets (she also has unlimited hay, ofc). She also became VERY skinny and had severe muscle wasting, so she couldn’t afford to lose any more weight. As I mentioned in my comment, it has only been 10 days (not a long period for critical care at all), and she’s put on half her weight back (~0.5 lbs, she has 0.7 lbs to go). So it has been very effective for her. Not to mention that critical care is much better for a rabbit than unlimited pellets, though it is expensive. I used pellets to put weight on another rabbit before, and it took over a month for him to gain a little over a pound of weight. The diet plan is just dividing the amount of critical care she needs to reach her goal weight into 4 feeding sessions. I will be starting to reduce the amount of critical care she’s getting soon to see if she’ll start eating more hay/ greens and pellets.

@@ZeroG151 sorry, I missed the editing and reposting part you mentioned. I was just mainly curious about what a critical care four times a day plan was and what your vet recommended food wise for that. Seeing if I could have been more help. It seemed very critical and just wanted to give you another option. But you sound like you know exactly what your doing. Good job and it's a great post to show that you went to a vet and didn't take it upon yourself to change your rabbits diet because you found the information online. 👍

I agree with everything but the outside part :/ I know plenty of people who have a massive shed type thing specifically designed for rabbits and they have cameras on them. I don't think human interaction is that important if they have toys, a friend or 2, and plenty of room. Obviously they spend time with them. I also think some rabbits prefer it but that's just my opinion on the matter. Obviously living outside with kids looking after them in the wrong housing is a different story but same goes for inside

well most people want to bond with and be with their rabbits all day everyday their whole life, just like a dog so human interaction would be important there. The reason that cats develop respiratory problems has nothing to do with the hooded litterbox it's the litter and dust that is unhealthy for them and gets in thier lungs. It appears you think that you know everything about bunnies meaning of us can read a bunnies body language. My bunny loved car riding he did not ride I a carrier sat up in my dogs booster seat and either spiralled out flopped or loaded while curiously looking out the window. This was of course a ride to the vet but he has been riding in a car since he was a baby. He passed away a week ago but he was the most chill rabbit in the world even the vet said they had never met another rabbit like my baby. His name was butters. So not all rabbits think like you believe they do. They have different attitudes, dispositions and natures just like we do.

You probably already know this but in case you don’t, some signals for dogs… They can wag their tail when they are both happy and frightened. They stress pant (if they are not hot And didn’t just exercise and they are panting), when tail is up they are alert, tail down scared. If a dogs ears stand straight up (example GSD) and someone is petting your dog and the dog puts their ears down they most likely are uncomfortable. Hei Hailey, I agree with you on your opinions. I have an question tough. I know some people who have bunny’s but don’t know (because education on rabbits isn’t good) or don’t care (they believe they are doing fine with what they are doing) how to properly care for a bun. I saw on fb a friend bought 2 bunny’s as pets for their kids. They live outside in a not so big cage. And a friend of mine got a bunny but isn’t planning on getting another one and isn’t going to let the bun get fixed for some time because of the cost. I told my friend every thing I know and if they need anything or advice I will always be there and sent a link to your channel. I also told them they really should get another bun. And the people on fb are like people I know but I’m not close friends with. And a lot of people don’t like it if you tell them what is better because they find it isn’t your business or they believe they are doing fine because their rabbits are ‘happy’. What is your advice in those situations? Should I just tell them? And what if they don’t care or don’t want to change anything?

Pen or free roam - depends on you flat/house/home, your furniture, your time at home and mostly at your rabbits character. Some Buns are very easy to handle and never start to chew on things they shouldnt, as long they have enough toys and bunny-proof stuff to chew on. But some Buns wont stop fro mchewing everything no matter what. They are differences in the personalities. And not all bunnys are made for Free Roam - if they chew and swallow your sofa-fabrics or filling - it could kill them - cables even with protection can get break and chewed on. BUT - if you will have a pen - give them run time on a big carpet for exercise and give them as much space as you can effort - so they do not suffer from depression or hurt themselves in a rampage because of a way too small cage.

My rabbits are kept indoor throughout most of the day and go outside and it's a totally different personality but, I also know farm rabbits that are so spunky and friendly to people. They're of course vacced, vetted, protected, and well looked after. If you have all the factors to protect them from disease and predators (like a proper fence fit to chicken protecting standards), it is not much different. They still receive proper diet, enrichment, healthcare, etc. The only difference is the ground they walk on when all factors are checked off

I personally feed pellets to my buns there 100 percent hay and grass they love them and are healthy and I only feed veggies every other day one of my rabbits has a sensitive stomach and I also did research and looked into grass only diets but instead of grass hay and they get hay in the morning and pellets at night or veggies and somethings herbs the morning I also grown little things of grass for them and that works for me

Alright 1. My male dwarf loved being outside and I felt better with him being in a harness. He liked exploring everything and if I felt like he was going too far I could grab the harness that's right behind his neck to stop him. And what I mean by that is it'd give me enough time to pick him up to move him closer to me. He was restricted to a petstore cage for 2.5 years, he was very depressed and deserved to explore what he could. He was housed indoors but he still liked being a little lawnmowers from time to time. 2. My female hates anything living and bullied my male up until his passing, she is a lot happier alone.

Hey Hailey, Can i ask you to do an updated version of a baby/young bunny diet? I saw yours from about 9-10 years ago, and I wanted to see if there were any updates or changes that you would make to that. I feel it's so controversial about pellets for baby bunnies. When I was in Japan, my vet said to limit the alfalfa pellets and I don't need to give any alfalfa hay, only 1st cut timothy is fine. When I moved back to the states with my bunny, and I spoke to a vet here, their thoughts were different. Anyway, it is just a suggestion on a new video idea.

Timothy hay is fine for babies, alfalfa is better until 6 months. Don't limit pellets unless you think is necessary

It seems to me that the rabbit community has some of the biggest rates of in-fighting ever. Ohio Holland Lops made a video on rabbit shaming, and it is real. If a rabbit owner even CONSIDERS putting their pet outside, the other side of the community will call them animal abusers and horrible people.
