Woodbridge, Suffolk is a beautiful and vibrant market town located on the banks of the River Deben. Woodbridge combines plenty of great shops with restaurants, pubs and several activities both indoors and out. Woodbridge sits on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it the perfect base to explore the Suffolk Coast and its many tourist attractions. The Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is one of Britain’s most beautiful landscapes. The area extends from the Stour Estuary in the south to the eastern fringe of Ipswich and then north into Kessingland. The AONB covers 403 square kilometers, to include ancient heaths, wildlife-rich wetlands, historic towns and villages, and windswept shingle beaches.
The Woodbridge waterfront is a bustling place with an interesting history. From the 1400s to the 1700s the area was the center of the thriving shipbuilding industry. The merchant and naval ships were built for customers to include Edward III and Sir Francis Drake. The quays in the area allowed the town to prosper, with local products such as rope and cloth being traded. To be used as a training center. Market Hill is a lovely collection of old buildings. Shire Hall is at its center, built in the 16th century as a local corn and court exchange. Close by is the imposing 15th century St. Mary’s Church, the church contains memorials to several of the wealthy residents of Woodbridge, to include Thomas Seckford, who died in 1587. Seckford established the Seckford Foundation, which still plays a major role in the town and owns schools and almshouses.
Further down is New Street the Ye Olde Bell and Steelyard Inn. The projection from the first floor housed a device that weighed goods being traded at the market. The Tide Mill is a unique kind of grain mill when the tide rises, the water is trapped in a large pool, which is then released to turn the machinery. There has been a tide mill on this site for more than 800 years. The present mill dates from 1793 and was working until 1957. The mill was saved in 1968 and later restored to working order a few years later. Recently, the mill has undergone further restoration, which allows visitors to learn more about its history and see it in action.
