Yes, you will see in SHINee's early days Taemin didn't have a whole lot of lines in their songs. People even used to make fun of Taemin's singing and they would say that he was tone deaf and couldn't sing. However, it's sort of a misconception that Taemin "couldn't sing." it wasn't that he couldn't sing, it was just that he debuted when he was so young -- he was only 14 years old -- that his voice hadn't really developed yet and he didn't really have a good grasp of how to use his voice and produce the sounds he wanted with it. So, in the beginning, when he sang he was often flat or his voice cracked or he was off key or out of tune, etc. And because he was being compared to the other members of SHINee who are all 2 to 4 years older than him, and the other members had such phenomenal voices to start out with, it really made Taemin sound like he was lacking. That's why in SHINee's first few songs you will see that he only has a few lines, and most of the time he was just given big solo dance breaks to fill the stage at his parts in the song. However, if he was really tone deaf he never would have become an SM Idol trainee -- SM would have put him on the dance track and probably steered him toward becoming a backup dancer -- and he definitely would have never become the amazing singer that he is today. Someone who is truly tone deaf is physically unable to hear the difference in the notes and is unable to carry a tune. But Taemin really wanted to prove to everyone that he wasn't just a dancer, so he spent a lot of extra time concentrating on vocal lessons and the other SHINee members -- especially Onew and Jonghyun -- spent some serious time coaching and mentoring him until he learned what it took to match their vocal range and to use his voice. (For the first year or more Taemin spent hours in vocal lessons and he would push himself everyday until his nose would bleed because he was so tired and worn out, etc. He practically lived in the training rooms at SM.) If you notice, Taemin's style of singing, especially in SHINee songs, is a lot like Jonghyun -- SHINee's main vocalist, and one of the best vocalists in the industry. And once you watch more of SHINee, you will see that Taemin fills in for Jonghyun whenever Jonghyun was unable to participate in a performance. And even today, Taemin often takes over the high notes and the parts that I think would probably have been Jonghyun's parts in their new songs. Jonghyun was the one that really took Taemin under his wing and helped him to become the singer and performer that he is today. So, many think that Taemin's voice emulates Jonghyun because he is the one that taught Taemin to sing. Jonghyun has always been Taemin's biggest supporter and the one that rooted for him the hardest and loudest out of anyone. It is also a well known fact among long time fans that for most of SHINee's career Taemin struggled with being an introvert and he often never spoke in interviews and on variety shows unless spoken to. He would let the other members carry the conversation.The members often talk about how they would have to prompt him to get him to speak. He is also known for telling a story or answering a question in an interview and half way through the story, he would stop speaking and just go quiet again. The other members often had to fill in the blanks for him and nudge him to get him to focus and keep on talking. It wasn't until around 2014 when Taemin had his solo debut and he had to start doing promotions and interviews by himself that he really forced himself to change and to come out of his shell. This was also part of the reason why Taemin struggled with self-image issues, where he worried about the fact that people always saw him as weak and helpless and often only knew him for his looks. This is the reason why Jonghyun wrote "Pretty Boy" for Taemin because Jonghyun wished the public would be able to see and understand the Taemin, he knew as a strong and masculine guy, and to stop looking at him as just a fragile "pretty boy." (BTW, "Petty Boy" is a B-side track on Taemin's solo debut album Ace and it features Kai as the rapper in the song. Taemin and Kai even performed the song together as part of Taemin's solo debut promotions.) This is part of the duality that is Taemin's personality. When not on stage performing, Taemin is a completely different person, and the Taemin you see when he is just hanging out with his members, isn't necessarily what he shows to the general public. But when Taemin is with the other members of SHINee he often still reverts back to being the baby of the group and just lets the rest of the members take on the responsibility of carrying the conversations in interviews, etc. It is not uncommon to see Taemin off in his own little world during interviews, he even still does it as a member of SuperM. Taemin will always have that maknae mindset no matter who he is with. Which is one of the reasons he turned down the role as the leader of SuperM, because he is much more comfortable as the maknae and didn't feel prepared for the leader role, etc.

5 years later and I still tear up about Jonghyun's passing; such a GREAT ARTIST (not just Kpop) in every aspect of the music industry. I believe he bought the rights to cover the song because it's original singer is Alejandro Sanz (in Spanish) and Jonghyun did this version in Korean. So many things to say. One, I appreciate you and your reactions. Well thought out and spoken. I am drawn to the RNB k-pop and my husband (who is a black man) says the same thing ... These guys were black in another life (same as with GOT7). SHINee coined the phrase "eating CD's". Their live performances are so good that people often think they're recorded. They trained hard, as in running on a treadmill while performing full songs and performances. I know it's still hard for me to see Jonghyun and wrap my head around that he's not here, but I am so grateful for all he shared with us while he was walking here with us. Mental health issues are very real, and sadly his passing has shed a light on the need for help, especially in a country like South Korea that doesn't like to talk about such things. As you can tell, I really respect and love these guys. I think they deserve all the love in the world. You definitely have a new fan on your channel because you're hitting all the music I really love!

I love those glasses, they’re very cool. “I’m convinced that shinee were black dudes in their past life” LMAOOO I love seeing recognition for Key and his incredible stage presence! He truly lives up to his title as an “all-rounder”. He’s a powerful dancer, unique singer, and fluid rapper, all while having an amazing personality and sense of humor. His song Bad Love, released last year, is the perfect embodiment of his artistic vision- it’s a wonderfully strange retro-inspired space breakup anthem with top-tier visuals and fashion. a little about what you said at the end- I got into kpop in 2018, and while I recognized SHINee as a legendary and influential group, I only just started actually following them in 2021. I sometimes felt strange emotions, like it wasn’t “fair” or didn’t seem right for me to feel sadness since I wasn’t actually a fan when they were all together as five. but I’ve been learning to accept those feelings as they come. it’s okay to feel sadness and a connection to someone even after they’re gone. as long as we keep loving Jonghyun and keep remembering him 💎❤️ thank you for the reaction! honestly you can’t go wrong with any SHINee live stage but when you get the chance I’d highly recommend the Stranger and Sherlock (Clue + Note) stages!!

Shinee are just unrivaled when it comes to live performances! Whatever IT is Shinee just have it! They are THE performers! They are all so unique in their style and also their voices but when they come together as a group it just creates magic! UJM was just restreaming their japanese concerts at Tokyo DOME the last few days and I was rewatching so I will recommend some performances from there because even tho I already knew the concerts, my mind was blown away all over again! Thank you so much for your SHINee and Taemin reactions! I love watching people fall in love with SHINee. They are true legends and really do have a lot of timeless songs. Such a multitalented group of men who can shine brightly together and individually as well and they all have hearts of gold. They are such pioneers and trendsetters in kpop. SHINee live performances are top tier. They can dance, run, jump, spin, etc all while singing at the same time and still sound so stable with their vocals. There is a saying that the only thing SHINee can't do is lip sync because they're known for being bad at it when they're forced to do it. 😅 I can't wait for you to dive more into their music and I hope you check out the other members' solo music as well. Key released his 2nd solo album this past September called Bad Love and he was heavily involved in the concept and music and styling for it. Minho just released his second ever solo song a few weeks ago at the end of December. Onew has released like 5 OSTs last year and is about to release his 2nd solo album in a few months. Jonghyun had a successful solo career as well and has 5 albums with tons of the songs that he wrote/composed/produced himself. As you get more into SHINee you'll see they master pretty much any genre of music. I recommend checking out their live performances of Sherlock and Stranger which are upbeat and maybe also a ballad like Sleepless Night, Selene 6.23, or An Ode to You. Their MVs and title tracks are amazinggg but their live performances and B sides are also super incredible. Ah sorry this comment ended up being longer than I anticipated. I just get really excited when it comes to SHINee, they're so special. I love and fully agree with what you said about keeping Jonghyun alive by listening to and appreciating the music. I really appreciated this reaction. It was such a kind and appreciative take, also very accurate (at least to me) on your opinions on each member. Key is so so good in front of the camera and his expressions while performing are something that always captures my attention and keeps it on him. Jonghyun is a beast on stage, his charisma is unparalleled. No one does it or can do it like him, you can really tell he pours his entire soul in his performances. Taemin is another beast on stage but in another way for his dancing. He and jonghyun are born performers. We used to say how taemin’s solo work and preferences are more geared towards large concerts but jonghyun is more indie-driven and he did a lot more shows in small and intimate venues. Minho is attractive on all levels, and so so passionate about SHINee, you can tell from his eyes he is 100% IN THE MOMENT and living it with his brothers and us. Onew is the epitome of understated raw talent, his voice is incredibly unique you don’t hear a second voice like his anywhere. Aside from his obviously killer voice, he is also such a steady and reliable presence in the group, showing up for the rest where needed and letting the others shine. He is just happy to be in the middle supporting the group, rather than the alpha-type leader that leads at the top/front of the pack.

@@infinitelocke For the future, you may just want to go through their discography, and please add Odd Eye, Evil, Prism for their harmonies. Jonghyun said that Taemin was born to perform and was his biggest fan. They have all acted but acting is Minho's passion. Onew's releasing a new album, hopefully soon, and he is singing in a series now. And Key is still promoting his Bad Love album and is a regular in two series. We're still high from Taemin's NGDA and Advice albums.

Yup Taemin was considered tone deaf back then which could mostly be contributed to him going through puberty. Jonghyun was a big help and inspiration for Taemin's vocal training. That's why a lot of people think Taemin sounds similar to Jjong a lot of times.

Taemin wasn’t tone deaf. He was going through voice change due to puberty so he was advices not to sing during that time (for a year or so) as it could damage his voice. However they still wanted him to debut as the main dancer. Once he was cleared to sing, he worked hard to develop as a singer.

Every member is so amazing in their own way and the synergy they create as a group. It blows my mind that they perform at this level and sing live for 3.5 hours. This performance of "Excuse Me Miss" was from SHINee's SHINee World Concert IV (SWC4) in Seoul in 2015. However, I think the song was originally released in 2013. And yep, still timeless. This is the concert where the majority of SHINee's best live performances are from. If you watch this full set or, even the full concert, you will see why Jonghyun goes into that phone booth at the end. (Each of them are going to their own phone booth on stage.) They are about to perform their next song, "One minute back." And you also really need to see their performance of "Close the Door," Which they performed right before "Excuse Me Miss." Fun fact: The live performance is an extended version of the song. If you pay attention, right before Jonghyun, "went off vocally" what he said in English is, "This is a new bridge, listen." As you just saw and heard, SHINee are known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. They are known as CD-quality singers for a reason. :D SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live and always sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography like this. SHINee live is like none other, and their stages are some of the best in the industry. Their concerts last 3 to 4 hours straight and they perform nonstop and never sound out of tune or out of breath. They are also one of the best dancers in Kpop and they have some of the best harmonies you will ever hear. EVERY time SHINee performs a song it will be different than what you have experienced before. That is why SHINee are one of the best performers in the industry. SHINee live is just as good the 100th time you see them perform a song as they are the first time you see it because they always make it unique. You never get tired of their songs because they know how to make it seem like a whole new experience every time. SHINee literally set the standard when it comes to live performances. It is actually known as the SHINee standard and it's what all other groups strive to reach. SHINee are Idol's Idols and legends among legends for a reason. They are one of the groups that pretty much made Kpop what it is today. I gotta be honest, I hardly listen to the studio version coz this, THIS live version is just so so superior. So epic! Everytime I want to listen to it, I watch this stage, like once a week. Jonghyun got me at "Noona" vocally. No one surpassed him in my book. He's a master of emotions in his singing. I don't hv to understand the lyrics, he told stories with his voice. When you said Jonghyun was a "black dude" ... Hahaha... That's exactly what crossed my mind when I review Shinee's first album back in 2008. I was like, "Is he really Korean? How does he get the black singer vibes so strong?" No one, as in the kpop idols I was aware of back then sings or sounds like him. And he's only 18 then. Thank you for appreciating Shinee. They serve quality performances I rarely see in kpop in general.

I’m a very new Shawol too. They are absolutely amazing. You spoke so beautifully about Jonghyun. I only just discovered him too, and I’m feel so fortunate that I have. He lives on as new fans discover him. Please, please watch Jonghyun perform Yi Si Fuera Ella (a remake of a Spanish song) that he makes his own. The first few times I listened (and watched it), I cried. His vocal power and emotion is unparalleled. Thank you again for your reactions to SHINee and Taemin. The thing about Taemin and him not being able to sing as well earlier in their career and how amazing his vocals are now is that he had our lovely Jonghyun by his side helping him and you can def hear similarities between Taem's singing style and Jjong's. SHINee are performing legends, their live vocals are even better than the studio recordings. Key is a whole rude mess and we love it lol. Jonghyun in my opinion is the best vocalist I've heard in kpop, period. Onew is also incredible, his voice sounds so clear like crystal, and it is so beautiful. They all have such distinct sounds that differ from each other but man when they come together and harmonize..... It is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. I would personally love if you checked out Key's solo song 'Bad Love' because damn was it impressive, one of my fav songs to come out of the mess known as 2021.

Jonghyun really was musically inspired by african artists like Michael Jackson, Maxwell, Prince, Jamiroquai, Chris Brown, D’Angelo, etc. He said these artists inspired him. He has very soulful solo songs and even some jazz style songs. He scats in some SHINee songs to give it that jazz feel. You should hear songs like Aurora, Red, Moon.... his whole album She Is so soulful. Moon was inspired by Prince's music. Jonghyun met Maxwell and guested him on his radio show Blue Night. He sang Maxwell's song called This Woman's Work too. Maxwell praised his singing. Taemin was very much inspired by MJ's dancing. You can see his influence in his dancing, but still with Taemin's own interpretation of it.

Thank you again for the great reaction and input^^ and for taking the time to really get to know SHINee it is very much appreciated 🥰 I see a lot of people talking about Jonghyun and Taemin and some about Key but please don't let that distract you from Minho and Onew who are just as talented I'm just saying this because I know that Onew has put himself last when it comes to SHINee he was basically raising them at a really young age and he carried a lot of responsibility so he himself cared more about the other members than about himself. He isn't just a great vocalist hes incredible and he is sadly very very humble about all of his talents. He has a masters in music and is apparently working on a phd too. He even sang opera at a concert. Since a lot of people are recommending the other member's songs I'm gonna recommend you Onew's he has a solo album as well and it's called Voice. It'd be great if you could check out the song "Blue" which is the titletrack. Minho also is incredibly skilled when it comes to song writing he wrote a LOT of the SHINee rap parts since debut. SHINee have said themselves that they dropped the group roles a long time ago because every member is very capable of doing about everything so they take great pride in that. There is a very interesting interview on the SbS channel its like an exclusive and its pretty recent. If you wanna check that out in private or on the chanel. Oh thank you for notcing my Key. He has been underrated for years. I should know I have been a Shawol since 2011. He is my ultimate bias. He has the most musicals in SHINee. He is an excellent dancer. He has such cohesive albums with Face, Bad Love, and Hologram. He provides alot of vocal stability in chorus parts of songs. Anyways the more you hear you will pick up on things. Will definitely check your other SHINee videos.

Really enjoy your reaction/appreciation to SHINee and Taemin. Thank you for your time in getting to know them. Since others members were talked about let me give a shout out to Onew. He’s my favorite singer and that’s hard to say with SHINee as they are all amazing. He’s only had one mini album so he doesn’t have that much songs out but he’s done many covers…mostly sang slower songs til now although he can literally sing any genre. In this latest group album Don’t call me you can really hear his different vocal techniques and range in all the songs. He has an album on the way in the next couple months. You should also do album reviews group and solo because their b-sides are also top tier and title track worthy. Their live performance of b-sides are great too. Some solo work for Onew: Rainy Blue which is his first solo (cover) he did at Tokyo Dome after his throat surgery where he couldn’t speak/sing for months and was unsure if could sing as he did before and had to retrain his voice. Nessun Dorma , yes he did opera lol like what Kpop idol does that 😊, he also supposedly holds the record of longest note 40secs in song Friends. His first solo title track Blue. Has a lot of symbolism that Shawols will explain if you react to it. His covers on the show Sea of Hope he did early last year is amazing. His English covers are so good too he has great pronunciation. Onew and Jonghyun are my favorite singers and duet. Check out Please don’t go (from a concert) and tragedy (visual radio show). Both strong unique vocalist that compliment each other well.

Taemin not singing solo lines on Replay has more to do with his voice still changing coz of puberty. He was 14, so young. But he learned from the best.. SHINee, Onew and Jonghyun esp. were like Taemin’s first vocal teachers.

Actually Jjong and Onew trained Taemin ! Maybe that’s why when I hear Taemin especially when I was at the concert they held in 2018 it feels like I’m hearing Jjong for a slip second as if he had give him a part of his voice sounds crazy I know but I really hear some quirks Jjong had ! And as a funny fact the 5 of them are the worst at lip sync 😂 The reason why they can dance though songs with though choreographies is because when they were still debuted they would run at 5 am and sing at the same time to be more stable with their voices ! And Taemin used danced everywhere so he would get used to any floors they would have to perform on !! I have so many notes like that I mean it’s been 14 years so I like to talk about about them 🥰 Don’t worry you’ll get to know them slowly ! Jjong is an angel protecting us and his loved ones and as Shawols it’s our Jong to keep his legacy alive and still to cheer on Onew Taemin Minho and Key because I love them equally ! Doesn’t matter if I can’t hear Jjong voice in the songs i still thrive when à Shinee comes out for don’t call me I was like damn they got even better ❤️ Yeah im biased 😂 Onew is actually the best leader because like Jjong and Minho said they are charismatic leader and another typer which he defines Onew by it ! Je glue them together instead of being like oh im the leader follow me no he listen to the members work alongside with them even tho he has one of the best voice with Jjong he is very humble ! I met them during a fanmeet in 2015 when the repackage for the album was released and they are truly the kindest people I’ve ever met ! But if you want a good laugh Watch Key and Taemin together in Vlives it’s just too funny !! And another thing I’ve followed « idols » since the end of the 90’s and they by far the BEST group out there ! Can you believe that Onew still live in their dorm ? Minho left not that long ago !!! Jjong left the dorm im not sure when but he went to live with his mom and sis and Key and Taem have their own appartement ! And another thing that makes Jjong so special is that as you South Korea is an old fashioned country so they don’t really accept the LGBTQA+ community from early on which would be maybe 1 or 2 years he showed his support for the community and changed a law im not sure when but it’s after 2008-2010 that made pay housekeeping phone calls they received I haven’t read the whole law so I don’t want to say something wrong and another thing in 2013 on national tv during on appearance on a tv show that talked about serious subjects he point that cyber bullying was becoming a thing ! He was a victim too and also talked about his mental health and such he used his fame to put the spot on important society problems ! And got backlashes for it but he did it anyway ! That’s why I think Jjong should be remembered for his legacy as an idols writer composer and so one but also as a Korean man who used his fame in a good way ! Unlike another idol that I’ve met and I hate and who disgusts me ! Often we forgot that they are human being and they’re private side is not as good as they want to make you think 🤬
