Infinity Train Review: S2E5 - The Parasite Car

“The Parasite Car” provided breathing room more than anything (at Alan Dracula’s expense). While Lake and Jesse have developed into good friends, they still both get deceived by Perry the parasite in a manner that thematically reminded me of “The Beach Car” episode from Book 1 of Infinity Train.

I enjoyed this episode because it shows off why Alan Dracula is different then other animal companions. He is not wise or sentient to any degree. He is just a deer, with seemingly random magical powers and he is never revealed to be anything otherwise by the end of the series. That's what makes him so great to me! He isn't antagonistic, but he is very rarely actually helpful, so when MT and Jesse enjoy his company, its purely because they like him for him.

"We don't like him because he listens to us! We like him because he's Alan Dracula!" I think imo THIS was the lesson learned in this episode, Jessie's desire to be liked by everyone causes him to pretend to be something he's not, obeying, submitting, might I even say MIRRORING everyone else. So he learns he can be himself and still be liked by people. This Is also why his number goes down in The Lucky Cat Car, right after he tells Lake not to care about what everyone thinks about her. Edit: that and because he promised to defend Lake, which is what he should have done for Nate

The deer also isn't the most helpful character. Although Alan Dracula does help, he is usually unreliable. So the parasite is very tempting because he directly benefits the heroes, even though it's at Alan Dracula's expense. I've been really enjoying these reviews. Keep up the great work.

Another parallel between this episode and the Beach Car is that the protagonist has to deal feeling like their companion isn't helping them on their journey, leading to Tulip being okay with trading away One One and Lake and Jesse being alright with Perry controlling Alan

"police states" yeah but I mean (1:50) is it everyone in the world [who has a reflection] or just those who pass through that car. Do they [mirror folks] have momories of non-existence (prior characteristics, before assimilated existence) or so, manifest characteristics from their charge via memories, experience etc. That on being formed, feel a trauma when suddenly having to choose reformations vs. annihilation.

I thought about getting into that topic but it ended up being so darn confusing and open-ended. (Might revisit it in the last review for this season? Or maybe I'll just dedicate an entire video to that topic? Not sure yet.) In my videos on Book 1, I talked about how my view is that the train grants retroactive sentience to reflections, and I still hold that view currently. So when passengers boarding the train have their mind read and databased as we saw toward the end of Book 2, that process might also be retrofitted to create "nulls" from reflections, but those "nulls" also have some sort of base personality too (which they have to suppress in order to act out their "job").

@@uncivilizedelk those were my thoughts as well and as you mentioned in the maps car review sentience is retroactive the beings on the car act as/ for their own adjectives. Lake is not the only one who fights the system... In no way though am I giving a pass to the "police states", I wanna make that clear it's on another level fucked all the way up. Seeing a review analyzing the structures and lore of the mirror folks from purpose to function and mechanics sounds really cool. Cool and time consuming but also kinda fun. I hope you do ,do it.

@@pedrokatcradle tulip not having a reflection after she gets back home does have some implications though. freeing her reflection actually changed tulip somehow to messes with the laws of reality. don't know which is more one one brand of comsic horror tho. messing with a parallel reality to help someone through emotional growth, messing with how reality interact with a passenger to fit the trains "illusions", or separating a part of a passenger and making up a personality and history for it.

@@Royvan7 yes absolutely, we can speculate how Lake's renegade affects life outside the train; but who's to say if the patroll guys will even stop chasing her if and when she makes it off the train. + Poor 1/1 the child god, what are his thoughts on all this. His absents also had implications.
