There is a distinction to be made that LOTS of people who make MBTI videos or videos on "type" seem completely unaware of. Its this: Yes, I'm generalizing but still...everybody-and-their-dog is harping/instructing about FUNCTIONS, and they call it MBTI but it isnt. Pick YOUR personal FIVE favorite online KZbin MBTI "content-creators" and I'll bet there isnt one who doesnt talk about FUNCTIONS. But--- Take yer TOP 5 favorite Type people online. Have ANY of them read "Gifts Differing" by Isabel Myers-Briggs? Im betting not one of them has. I'd be quite surprised. Functions are mentioned in that book, but its short, and brief, almost in passing. Noooowhere near the relentless harping and emphasis we see online today. So where did all this function-stuff come from? You also wont find it in the book TYPE TALK by Kroeger and Theussen. You wont find it in LIFE TYPES by Hirsch & Kummerow (another researched and leading MYERS-BRIGGS book. We now have THREE authoritative books on type and very very little on functions....again where did all this function-mania come from?Think of the last TWENTY ttype videos you've listened to. Yes, that many. Has even ONE of them listed/mentioned/Named even one of the three books I've mentioned? I'm betting not any of them have. Go back to 2010 on KZbin and an ENTJ video by Mike Adams. Here's the link: @ Do you hear him going on and on and on about "introverted sensing, extroverted intuition, etc? Nope. He talks about "the 4 letters" of type. So how did we get to all the stuff we CALL MBTI today, but is really just...Functions. People today talk waaayyy more about functions than Isabel myers-briggs ever did? My own belief is....probably a little after Mike Adams's videos, some guy came along who went by the name of Dave Superpowers. AT THE TIME, there was farrrrr less "competition" on the web, alot of people never read or heard of the 3 books i mentioned and many folks had not discovered Mike Adams's videos, either. So-o...many folks simply weren't more aware...and along comes this Dave Superpowers with a large flurry of videos--POW---and, he also spoke a bit too fast. He was kinda hard to follow, seemed like he had info, but no one really challenged him (hardly anyone was doing mbti videos then, compared to now), so folks just bought into it cuz: A) they didnt know any better B) they hadnt read the books C) "dave" had very little competition and made alot of videos so he sorta dominated --and people didnt know otherwise. His videos likely were seen by many (not a whole lot else out there on youtube at the time), so people believed it, and from (approximately) 2014 to today, people likely came across his videos, didnt read the books and THEY started making videos about Functions, then some of their followers made youtube videos and repeated what they were taught and so on...and sure enough--- everybody-and-his-dog is talking about functions these days. But it isnt really MBTI. Its just....Functions. Myers-Briggs was the 4 letters (I refer you back to the ENTJ Mike Adams video which was in 2010. We weren't all strung-out on "Function-itis" then. I haven't heard Frank James mention even one of the three books on Type. Who taught him? Function-mania likely "lasted" til now, because people can always be politically-correct, hold their head up high and say with functions they are "going deeper". It sounds more "beyond beginner level" doesn't it? But they didnt get it from the books. The are "parroting" a guy who got lucky in the beginning and didnt have alot of competition. My opinion. Anyone is welcome to prove me wrong. I can take it. I just wish people would call it what it is and be honest. And bother to look. And trace some history. ---"Rock ON!"
@dabbler1166
@dabbler1166 3 жыл бұрын
@INFJ 4w5 It matters. Because Honesty matters. And I'm Calm just fine. Maybe you should wake up and smell the coffee. The results are not the same, because the function-people and the 4-letters people wont be talking about the same things. Obviously people will follow whichever method they want. But the 4 letters are Myers-Briggs. Functions are just...functions. It may be popular --but its a different system. Just like people used to call David Kiersey's books Myers-Briggs, but it was really just his own system. None of the folks who favor Functions and make videos about them, ever say what book they learned it from! Chances are they haven't read even one of the 3 books I mentioned, above. Seems like LOTS of folks are just "parroting" someone else who made a video on functions. I'll bet no more than 2 out of 10 of these "function video creators" have any Certification at all. I will simply let the audience read my 1st post, above. I think it can stand on its own.

Interesting read. Fundamentally, I don’t agree with it at all, but I think it’s an interesting read nonetheless. Out of curiosity, what is your type? Even when you study “real psychology” there’s always going to be branches in theory and deviations from the original. It’s an evolving science and if we didn’t have people like Skinner (who maybe went too far in the other direction) we’d all still be treating things like Freud did. No one can “prove” you wrong because there’s almost nothing testable to be proven wrong. It just is. Either way, my take: Functions are every bit MBTI as the letters themselves. And while yes, it is a good idea to look at where things came from, there’s no need to treat it as the end-all-be-all. Could you imagine any other field completely and blindly sticking to stats and theories that are decades old at this point? You’d think it absurd. Why should MBTI be any different? Anyway, that’s just my Ni-Fe-Ti-Se (😉) opinion on the matter.
@dabbler1166
@dabbler1166 3 жыл бұрын
@@sunchips18 No one is saying that things shouldn't advance. But too many folks try to sound authoritative and like they have the "Real" interpretation of things when they've really branched-off and are promoting their own system.
@sunchips18
@sunchips18 3 жыл бұрын
@@dabbler1166 I suppose I can see the idea, but I just don’t see the point in even getting tied up in it. Whether it’s the “definitive” idea or not, there’s no questioning that the function types lend to an overall more nuanced and better understanding of the MBTI types. Also, interestingly enough, I ran into a forum thread from 2010 discussing the MBTI type of a Star Wars character today. And wouldn’t you know? They mentioned functions in that thread from back in 2010. So, it’s hardly a new generation of KZbin phenomenon either.
@dabbler1166
@dabbler1166 3 жыл бұрын
@@sunchips18 It's not a matter of "getting tied up in it at all", it's a matter of simple Honesty. While yes, you can find somene, somewhere, even back in 2010 that happened to also mention Functions, that does nothing to disprove my original post. You can say Functions is a "overall more nuanced and better understanding of the MBTI types." Better, is highly debatable. Functions, is a different system. Notice that the people on KZbin today go on and on and on in their own videos about the functions but typically DONT talk about "the 4 letters" except to say in the beginning which "type" they are discussing. Then its all Function-mania. But they (almost never) talk about, for example, Sensing VS. Intuition. No. They ramble on about which KIND of sensing, or which kind of intuition. The books I mentioned (which are researched) talk about sensing AS OPPOSED TO intuition, or Judging VS Perceiving. The point is: They are different systems. Some folks flatter themselves over the increased complextiy and hair-splitting with Functions, that they have "a deeper look", but they dont tell the viewers that they have strayed further from the Founders --and the most widely-read books about Type which were widely available in any Barnes-n-Noble bookstore! They may even say it doesn't matter. But then, they are just being Arbitrary and snobbish. If it turns-your-crank and you like it, fine. But be honest and don't mislead the viewers as if you've got "the real deal" (Myers-Briggs) when you've clearly, already strayed, from what the Founders created and what well-researched books have said! Too funny, how soooo many folks making "functions" videos almost never cite any Book on the 16 Types, or any authority, or research. They just blabber their own view as if its the ultimate truth with nothing to back them up. So much for "critical thinking". And with that, you can keep going on if you want. I am confident I have proven myself clearly. I have cited sources. I have been specific. Honesty matters. I would simply invite anyone reading this to re-read my original post.
