That was incredible! Thank you for the ATC too. I lived in Venice back in the early 1990's and saw a couple of go-arounds, and it always looked weird to see a plane that low having to bank and accelerate quickly like that. The pilot here seemed very calm and collected and the ATC seemed to handle this very professionally as well. Great video!

+Fred Herrman Thank you so much! Wow very lucky, nice to be so close to the sea and the airport :) Did you see the recent go around video at Lukla, Nepal? That looked scary!
@TheFredismShow8 жыл бұрын
No I didn't. I will definitely look for it now. What amazed me too about your video is how quickly the pilot had to react. I would imagine that after a five hour plus flight from New York, everyone, the crew, the passengers, and certainly the pilots, are ready to set the jet down and de-board. And though I know the pilots have to always be very alert, there must be a feeling of, "Okay, let's complete this final approach and hit the head" kind of feeling inside them. So to have to quickly pull up and turn north with such little space left must feel like taking on a whole new cycle of flight that one would rather not have to execute.
@noelphilips8 жыл бұрын
+Fred Herrman Yep absolutely - at one point you can hear the stress in the pilot's voice as he is dealing with ATC on the go around. Very professional too in that he ensures that TOGA is set and calls that before responding to ATC.

At this time, runway 24R was closed for construction. You can see it on the go around. There are two sets of parallel runways. 24R and 24L on the north side, 25R and 25L on the south side. Normally the outboards, 24R and 25L are used for landings, and the inboards, 24L and 25R are used for takeoffs. Since they were down one runway on the north complex, they were trying to fit aircraft in with minimum separation to move the traffic normally, and they just got too close. An A-321 close to maximum landing weight using flaps 3 can have an approach speed of around 150 knots. The tower asked him to slow, but they very well may have been at their final, or slowest speed already. Most other Boeings and Airbus narrow body aircraft can slow down towards 130 knots using full flaps.
@noelphilips8 жыл бұрын
+joetocayo Thank you so much for your detailed explanation! I kind of thought it was due to the runway being closed, interesting to hear about why we couldn't slow down enough though. We ended up having a long wait on the ground as everyone was taxying in the same way, we had a 20 minute queue to the stand :(

7:20 What is that little bright white thing like flying low to the water in opposite direction of the plane when the plane is in a right turn. It is too small for a little plane but it isn't absolutely not 'a Balloon' because it has a lot more speed than a typical ballon would have moving trough wind. Strange, already an old video so maybe it's already in the comments somewhere. But if someone knows or thinks what it is I would like it very much to hear it!

Yep non-ETOPs. AA have only 16 ETOPs at this time (N118xx to N133xx); this was N103NN :)
@fnordranger9 жыл бұрын
+pbateson Are they rare? I inadvertently caused one the other day, a Southwest 737 was behind me for landing, and my approach speed was just too slow. ATC had them go around, when they caught up to me as I tried to clear the runway as quickly as possible (which wasn't fast enough). I kinda wondered how the pilot explained that to the passengers. Kind of a trip having a 737 right overhead, too, in a little Cherokee.
@dominiquestephenson1957 жыл бұрын
inflight Video -nice video & ATC! I subscribe. For those like myself who were wondering what ETOPs is I looked it up. Its kinda like what we used to call "blue water ops" in Naval Aviation. Its for aircraft flying routes where the nearest suitable emergency airport is at least 60 minutes away. (For the Nav it was either the boat or the water, no other bingo options in range). ETOPS means "Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Standards" and type certification as such requires about a dozen systems to meet more stringent endurance requirements to ensure sufficient diversion safety on these routes. Examples are (for the A321), extra fuel tanks, 3 electrical systems, tougher APU, Airframe & Engine combinations proven capable of meeting these requirements, Good OEI (one engine inactive) flight characteristics, etc. The AA A321S sent to Honolulu was non ETOPs, (A321H designates ETOPs certified). AA stated that although non-ETOPs, that airframe was exactly the same configuration as their A321H's except for the required extra medical oxygen and the extra fire retardant requirements of ETOP. AA stated the range and fuel was the same as an A321H so they must have installed the extra fuel tanks already. The return flight was cancelled so my question is did AA have to certify that A321S to a A321H before they could fly back to LAX?

The funny thing is that his routing from the go around and the right turn straight over KSMO at 5,000 is extremely close to the Special Flight Rules Area that goes from KSMO over LAX midfield at 3500-4500 (and in fact to the bottom of Class B which is 5,000 right there). In the SFR area you have GA aircraft that are not talking to ATC threading the needle. LAX tower must have been pretty certain there was no one coming through or into the corridor.

+drfaustus72 Yep we actually flew over the top of a light aircraft over the bay area - ATC mention it and then you see it passing way below us :)

@johnfowler16273 жыл бұрын
You can't really get annoyed. As a controller in the Los Angeles Arrivals area of SoCal TRACON, I probably saw, on average, 2 or 3 go-arounds during my work week. It just happens at a busy airport. The alternative is to waste a mile on every single arrival, which would result in far more delays.
@Robbie10753 жыл бұрын
Did ATC order the go around? And was it due to traffic on the runway? I thought that's what I heard but I am not exactly fluent in pilot-atc chatter so lost who was who.

Whoa! By the time ATC cleared the aircraft to takeoff on 24L you were just over a mile out from landing. Got a question though; when I compare what the flaps settings look like on the A321 in Flight Simulator X to the flap settings in your video, it looks like the flaps are set to 3 in your video instead of 4. Setting the flaps to 4 would have let the aircraft slow down further and maybe prevented the go-around. Thoughts?

What happened to Runway 24R & Runway 25L, the two runways at the airport actually used for landings?
@noelphilips9 жыл бұрын
+MegaAirplanelover They were doing runway work that closed them, so they had to operate all flights on the two runways. This is what caused the go-around as they were doing takeoff and landing on the same runways, and the departing aircraft ahead didn't get off the ground quick enough!

Who the hell cleared that departing a/c to 24L? WTF?

They had a runway down for maintenance so were squeezing everyone in, I was surprised to hear they cleared the aircraft to depart while we were so close!

Hearing the pilot say "minimum fuel" at 15:08 isn't a good sign... Cheers

KCAE 80s..We had a C150 doing t and gs and a Eastern 727 "yeah I'm a old fart" was on a mod base to final. He was told of the trainer on final and replied he was "draggin his feet" as it was. Well the 150 took his sweet time and the tower told the 727 to go around rather than blow the 150 off. All hell broke loose. Capt told tower " That just cost us more fuel than he will burn in a year!!" Tower gave him a # to call but Capt said he wanted to talk to him face to face. AND HE DID. Walked across the ramp and they exchanged words.

What does ATC mean by telling diff aircraft to taxi full length, respective to the situation/circumstance in this specific video/airport?
@joetocayo8 жыл бұрын
+KuostA At LAX there is a requirement to hold short of taxi way F until receiving clearance from the tower when going to runway 25R. This is the taxiway just a few hundred feet from the end of the runway. When they did land, the third aircraft you saw waiting was at taxiway F.
