I'm totally for being a proactive shopper. By all means, do pay attention to the food you eat and the ingredients used to make it, but I think it's reckless and oversimplifiying to assert that less ingredients = safer. The majority of hard to pronounce ingredients manufacturers put in food products are things like stablizers and preservatives. Those are generally unnecessary in freshly made food, but they help the average busy adult put tasty food on the table in the middle of a hectic work week. "Just buy fresh vegetables" isn't practical advice for a lot of people. In a perfect world, we'd all have plenty of time to select the nicest items from the farmers market before heading home and making all our food from scratch, but in our imperfect world, there's no shame in pulling the old reliable box of instant mashed potatos out of the pantry. The loaded potato soup will taste just as good with a little anticaking agent. Those preservatives are what makes it possible to have a fluffy slice of bread days after opening the bag.
@samijett8527Ай бұрын
@@TheBluestflamingos fr. I used to really like Pam’s content but it’s starting to become class shaming and fear mongering 😒
@catherinegarmon3027Ай бұрын
But sometimes there are equivalents that have fewer ingredients. Bob's Red Mill makes potato flakes that are only dehydrated russet potatoes. They are still easy and shelf stable, instead of fresh potatoes. Same with popcorn, just pop plain corn. You can sometimes do without the stabilizers and preservatives just by a simple switch.
@samijett8527Ай бұрын
@@catherinegarmon3027 easy, shelf stable, and prohibitively expensive for some people.
@theknittinkitten2954Ай бұрын
@@samijett8527I mean, I definitely think most shelf stable foods are very expensive for the average person. But I do think people should be allowed to buy whatever they want. I ain't judging anyone. If you're comfortable spending a couple bucks on some cheap dehydrated mashed potatoes, by all means. But in terms of cost, it's much cheaper to just put a potato in the microwave for 4-5 min and mash it in a bowl with some butter and salt. Especially if you get those potatoes on sale
@samijett8527Ай бұрын
@@theknittinkitten2954 in terms of monetary cost it’s cheaper, but in terms of labor when you’re already exhausted, tearing a top off the bag, dumping it in a bowl of hot water, and stirring, is a lot cheaper than washing the potatoes, poking them so they don’t explode, putting them in the microwave, making sure you have something sturdy enough to take them out without burning yourself, transferring them to a new dish because the one you used in the microwave is too hot to deal with, then mashing them and adding butter, milk, and salt to get the same results. Some people have the luxury of time and energy, some people rely on processed and prepackaged meal solutions and I feel like Pam has been doing a huge disservice to those people in the more recent months with her scare tactics. The economy is already exhausting enough, I don’t think she needs to add one more thing to the plates of people just trying to survive.

I wish I could cook from scratch all the time because man does it taste so much better. Ever since I started cooking from scratch there are certain things that I will never eat processed again. One of which is red sauce or spaghetti sauce whatever you want to call it. I make a sauce in the crock pot which is awesome and it only has in it what I put in it. Thank you for this info. I'm a type 2 diabetic and I'm making changes to lose weight too be healthy and come off the medications I'm on. I'm in the healthcare field and I've known about not looking at calories, fat sugar, etc. but sometimes u need someone to remind u to slow down, take time to look for the right foods that won't do as much harm. I'm learning to take my time and plan out my grocery list into meals. ❤

Maltodextrine is in a lot of the sugar-free stuff like things that say sugar-free or stevia etc We quit buying that stuff because we were told that sugar-free stuff like stevia was better for you than regular sugar but we found out that it's actually worse for you than actual sugar So we're like okay and we threw everything out that was sugar-free and started looking at the ingredient label and if it had maltodextrine, We didn't buy it. But yeah it's like the worst ingredient in sugar-free stuff and aspartame is another one that you want to stay away from. I actually found this spray oil at Walmart for cooking It's by Great value I believe and it only has I think one ingredient in it it doesn't have all those other silicone ingredients like the other spray oils do and I looked up that silicone name on the oil sprays And it said it was used for non-food items and I was like oh okay not buying that ever again and went to this spray oil that only has one ingredient that is natural it's not like anything bad. So yeah I'm so serious and it's the only brand I can think of that's one ingredient for spray oil. To cook with. I told my family about it and they switched to it.

I love that you are educating others. 🥰🙏🏻👏🏻 Sadly, for the most part, the items with better or less ingredients, are most often more expensive. It breaks my heart to feed my family the things I do, but with inflation, my grocery budget is the same, but it gets me LESS THAN HALF of what it use to. 😢 So I rely on very cheap foods and food pantries. And food pantries often get the cheap stuff donated. I am praying hard for some relief.

2 years ago, I kept having kidney and bladder problems. I didn't have a weight problem but I was borderline diabetic. The doctor put me on a STRICT diet of fresh fruits and vegetables (cooked or raw) and very little meat. NO processed foods, homemade bread, and absolutely NO SUGAR, NO artificial sweaters, NO sugary syrup, very little milk, or milk products. In 9 months, my blood sugar was where it should be, I lost 25 lbs. without trying. I have cut the number of migraines I have in half. Most importantly, my kidneys and bladder seem to have healed. Think of food as your body's medicine.

Buy what you like, and you can afford.. these foods are perfectly safe to eat.. there's a reason that all the grocery store.Food mongers are getting so much hate for. These foods are fine.You shouldn't be eating popcorn everyday anyway... buy would you like and can afford and try to get most of your nutrition through whole foods. I'm going to keep eating my pre packaged popcorn. I've ate it since I was little and my doctor's visits are perfect. I just don't eat them very often. It's a treat food.And it's cheap, especially going through college these foods that are inexpensive getting me through and because I eat mostly nutritious whole foods.I haven't gained the freshman fifteen.
@randomoneforstuff3696Ай бұрын
If you make popcorn yourself, it's no different than eating corn on the cob because the only two ingredients are corn and salt. Then, it doesn't have to be a "treat" because it's a relatively healthy whole grain.
@moringsdaughterАй бұрын
@@randomoneforstuff3696 Prepackaged popcorn is also a whole grain and does not have any less nutritional value than "diy" popcorn. It's the same whole kernels of corn in each product, with the same vitamins and nutrients.
@randomoneforstuff3696Ай бұрын
@@moringsdaughter It is true that all popcorn consists of whole grains, but not all prepackaged popcorn has the same nutritional value. Some have hydrogenated oil added, which include cancer-causing trans fats. Others have artificial yellow food coloring (banned in the EU for their negative developmental effects). That being said, I personally buy Lesser Evil brand popcorn (the Himalayan Gold variety from Costco) because it tastes great and has good ingredients. To elaborate on trans fats - yes there are trans fats, but just to the point that there is less than 0.5g per specified serving size so that it shows up as 0g on the nutrition label. However, the serving size is oftentimes listed as 1/4 or 1/5 of a bag (for brown bag microwave popcorn), so if you eat a whole bag you might be ingesting ~2g trans fats.
