MY BOUNDARIES (IMPORTANT)
stop asking me to make videos about ever after high. same with the winx club. no ifs, ands, or buts about it. i have said numerous times i dont care to watch, so quit trying to change my mind.
i make it clear what my niche is. literally say what it is in the beginning of my videos: nostalgia, family, and children’s entertainment. When i say nostalgia, that means nothing in the older demographic past the year of 2015 (because that is nostalgic for me)
so stop asking me to review these live action teen series on netflix like ginny and georgia, outer banks, and never have a ever.
yes, every once and a while i talk about something outside of my niche if i really want to, but i mainly put that content on my patreon.
i don’t do this all the time because i don't want to take away from the focus on my channel. like i did when i talked about don't toy with me miss nagatoro, and when cassie howard pissed me off and i included her in that white women tears videos. when i make these videos you guys keep getting on me to talk about things outside my niche.
and no, i will not make a second channel to talk about these things.
im going to stop putting these videos out publicly all together and just put them on patreon if you guys wont understand that.
if i have a video that is patreon only and you tell me to post it publicity on youtube, you’re blocked.

It's always sad to see people being racist in fandoms, ESPECIALLY in kids’ cartoon fandoms. Like, WHAT could've happen to make you so racist over a KIDS’ SHOW? And though this isn't a cartoon fandom, the Genshin fandom is so racist it’s insane especially towards the Chinese

I saw a skin color palette comparison between Genshin and another game by a Chinese dev and the difference was HUGE. There was a huge variety in the other game's palette (from light to dark and even some fantasy colors like green) and mostly light tones in Genshin's. Saying "there are mostly light skin people in China" is a terrible excuse when a) The internet exists (Though China does have a limits, looking up references of how people look probably isn't a prohibited thing, and given the track record of anti-Chinese propaganda, who knows how far the censorship goes. That said, I've literally never been there to know and confirm/dispute things) b) Other CN developed games are using a variety of tones for their characters. (See the example above. Also the Chinese version of Miracle/Love Nikki even made different skin tones for the character, though their track record towards in-game POC characters hasn't been the best. ) c) There are dark-skinned Chinese people, but because of colorist beauty standards, they're often overlooked and ignored, to say the very least.

I play Genshin a lot and this is the thing that bugs me the most. The fans are very anti black and hate any criticism of the game thru the lens of race (the African-coded hilichurls, and lack of dark skinned NPCs or player characters) and say things like "not every game has to represent you" and "it's a fantasy world", as if those worlds aren't deliberately created by people in the real world.

There is nothing more exhausting than defending a fictional character you don't even like (because the show had no interest in developing them), because the fandom has decided to crap on them for the upteenth time. And that's not even addressing shipping and how quickly nonwhite love interests are kicked to the curb. I had no idea how many people missed the fact that rue was black. I bet it was because in the book katness talks about how rue reminded her of prim who was white and blonde but like the point wasn't "she looks like my sister so I care about her" it was the fact that they were both so young and the government felt totally justified to murder them. The heartbreaking part is that katness already sacrificed herself to save her sister but was completely powerless to then save this just as innocent little girl. Also I want to add that the scene where katness is putting flowers around and in rues hair after she died is an absolute tear jerker in both the book and the movie. It's so gross that people saw Amandla Stenberg (rue's actresses) in that state and were like "it's not as sad because she's black" jfc

One thing I really get angry about is the fact that people (mostly non black people but also some non-dark skin black people) always (exaggeration) seem to to draw black characters lighter with loose curls (or just none at all! Ninjas really be trying it!) And when we come and confront them on it the give crap excuses with "lighting and colour-references and hair blow-outs and straight hair wigs" (I AM NOT EVEN LYING) but the second a girl makes a character's hair just a little bit to curly or skin barely a shade darker they come at us with the "stop bringing your woke agenda into every piece of media" like ? Anime fandoms are also horrible when it comes to racism. Make Naruto black and all of a sudden you’re “blackwashing” but if they whitwewash him, it’s okay 🙄. Also the whole thing that happened recently with the Percy Jackson show and the casting of Annabeth. These people will scream from the rooftops “hire based on talent, not race!” and got mad Rick Riordan did JUST that.

i just _sincerely_ love how people constantly ignore the popularity of whitewashing in a large majority of fandoms while there's a high chance those same people will complain about how "blackwashing is overtaking fandoms!" and how much that "the double standards are unfair and stupid!" "blackwashing and whitewashing should be treated equally." And then they also go on about generalizing editors as them always trying to "fix canon" and they generalize about them being racist to white people lmao. the way they constantly don't care about learning the subtle (or even blantant) ways of racism and/or colorism in people's art by whitewashing just says a lot. you can have your own negative opinions on blackwashing but honestly most of those negative opinions are based on ignorance and lack of awareness about the constant racism and/or colorism in fanart. also that exact point. i love how people got mad about Ariel's casting when it was blatantly obvious she was casted due to talent (like her voice is literally so beautiful and she sounds like a literal princess!!). people be like "have fun with your art don't let anyone stop you!" or "Choose by talent not race :)!" but then bitches will be like "🤯😡💢The character is casted as BLACK and its ONLY because of political and WOKE reasons!!!" the next. the oppressors need to choose a struggle lmao: either be mad about minorities constantly being used by companies or people that don't care for their rights or be mad about minorities existing. its that's simple lmao

All the characters of color on PJO got stories concerning their ethnicity, such that to change it to anything else is to erase the character entirely. It’s amazing how these people love to talk about how a show’s writing is homophobic or misogynistic, yet the moment you talk about the racism it’s just to create drama all of a sudden I remember ranting and explaining how racist it was to demote Alya and Nino as characters that had “one job” which is to be the Black best friend. I think this came around the Risk episode, because everyone wanted to be mad at everyone and everything BUT the writers Anyways, I said what I said and ended up getting a bunch of hate anons, some of which kept referring to one user. I checked them out on another blog, since apparently they blocked the sideblog I made the rant post with. They went on a whole thing about how me, and a bunch of Black people I referenced, were acting silly, making it uncomfortable for White people to engage in fandom, and how they can’t “ever criticize Black characters without being called racist” Mind you, this blog is apparently big within the ML fandom for talking about the writing, particularly with the misogyny. So yeah, while they were complaining about Black people making White people uncomfortable, I’m the one actually getting threats and harassment because of them. Idk what is it with Black characters where people don’t want to consider the racist writing messing with their characterizations, as opposed to misogyny writing messing with female characters. I mean I know why, it’s just incredible these guys don’t want to acknowledge it despite being so blatant about it

(LONG COMMENT!!! my apologies...) the alya situation gives me flashbacks to how people tried Amber from Invincible. not only was she a white person in the comics (meaning, fans already hated her from the start for being "woke pandering") but also in the comics she was just... an everyday girlfriend of a superhero type. no thoughts, head empty, no complaints ever about Mark. the series had the nerve to give her (as white and nonblack fans say) a "sassy" atittude. EVEN BLACK MEN WERE CALLING A YOUNG (JUST 17!!) YEAR OLD GIRL A BITCH AND A PIECE OF SHIT FOR BEING MAD AT MARK FOR NOT SPENDING TIME IN HER WHEN HES SUPPOSED TO BE HER BOYFRIEND..... even if you think she was being a lil overdramatic about Mark spending time being a hero except of being there for her, remember shes a child... but nahhh black women being inmature? thats a luxury for white women, only they can be babied when in the wrong. :/ the discourse around her character is so nasty 😭 most black women that defended her were just harassed and stereotyped as being "just as annoying and bad of a partner as her" and they were ALL palm colored people saying "black women are bad dating material".... just yikes 😞

Thinking about how Allura got treated in the voltron fandom. Like did she mess up occasionally yeah, but she deffo wasn’t anywhere as bad as people made her out to be. I remember when she made zarkon see/feel the suffering he caused to an innumerable amount of people and the fandom was attacking her for it, like zarkon hadn’t destroyed her entire PLANET and killed her whole FAMILY. There was nooo sympathy for her, a lot of people didn’t even try to understand her and in my opinion she didn’t do anything wrong. The fandom was really defending a coloniser/mass murderer and her oppressor and the MAIN villian cos Allura got rightfully angry. It was baffling. Esp when u consider the Keith is the canonical hot headed character of the show and he didn’t get half the aggression Allura did. His actions are constantly justified by the fandom. It was disgusting. Honestly between that, Allura constantly being called a “Mary sue” and her dying for the other characters she was treated horribly by the fandom and the show writers. SMH.

I've noticed with some fandoms or media genres that there are white fans, especially of anime and video games (mostly in space of mostly men in my experience) that seem to just have this default mentality when they just assume the things they like must have been made for them, or that they are marketed for white people be default as some sort of weird way they gatekeep against criticism or people who want better. I don't know how many times I've seen forum debates where you have people who think everything they like as a white person is just white by virtue of projection. Even bizzarely with stuff like Anime where white americans are not the primary audience but they just think they are, because they happen to like it. Video games is a more newer topic where its divided like that. Where for whatever reason white fans just don't assume minorities (often black people) play video games, read comics, watch cartoons or anime, and treat diversity like an invasion of something that they just claimed was theirs, and to me its not unlike the mentality of how this country was formed. "It's mine because I'm here." Like especially asking for more variety for race options in character creation modes some games have. You ask for more black hairstyles or better skin color options and some people get mad and call it pandering, even though white hair options are already there. They complain because they don't want others to get stuff that they decided isn't necessary.

Meanwhile, people who make racist edits or whitewash a character, they’re called “trolls” and people who criticize them are called “sensitive”. If you want an example of this behavior, watch Hero Hei, he’s a racist who said that vitiligo is “a bad attempt at not being racist” and called black person racist just because she made a black edit of an anime character. Even if it is “trolling”, whitewashing and racism aren’t jokes.

But I think the worst case of fandom racism I've seen was the aftermath from the whole Nessa in Pokemon situation (who I am glad has a black VA, considering how marginal they are) where some guy was so angry at the whole debate over her skin color in fanat, that he just draw her in high resolution as a chimpanzee in a wig. The guy got so offended over the debate that he just went full mask off and posted his art. You could search it up to find that. It was one of those moments whenever someone feels so taken back that a poc disagreeing with them that they just drop slurs thinking they shut you up or win the argument, like their nuke. I'm not saying the Pokemon fandom is racist (some racist people exist in it that I've seen) but I don't know wtf that was about.

This is for the Stranger Things Fandom, IF KALI PRASAD (008) WAS A WHITE GIRL WITH BLUE EYES OR SOME SHIT INSTEAD OF A BROWN SOUTH ASIAN GIRL YA’LL WOULD BE ALL OVER HER RIGHT? I don’t care who disagrees with me but Kali deserves to come back for season 5. She should fight by her little sister’s side, she deserves a normal life with El and her new family, she deserves to experience life instead of living on the streets hiding away or being experimented on in a dumbass lab, she deserves to go to college just like Johnathan, and she deserves a family, KALI DESERVES THE LIFE SHE’S BEEN DENIED.

You can’t even speak on the racism towards Maddy Perez on the Euphoria Subreddit without the thread being immediately locked because people (mostly white people) got offended that it spoke about the racial biases within the fandom and critiquing Cassie. Also the amount of weekly “Cassie did nothing wrong” is exhausting because she is blatantly wrong but people will try to justify it.

What I really can't understand is when people treat a character being wrong like it's the worst thing they could be. They say everything they can to justify the actions of their faves, and forget that "justified" and "right" are not synonyms. When a white character does something wrong or harmful towards a character of color, of course there can be reasoning behind their actions, justifications, lines of logic, patterns of behavior, and anything else that would make the action make *sense* in the narrative, but that will never change the fact that what they did was wrong or harmful. No amount of justification will ever make it "okay" that they did it, and people pointing out that what they did wasn't okay, aren't necessarily saying that the character is then the absolute scum of the earth for it. But given how I when the shoe is on the other foot, how often I'll see people immediately taking to slurs and accusations beyond the actions seen from the character when the harmful act is done by a person of color... I can't tell if it's just projection at this point, or maybe there actually are people acting like this to their precious white faves and I just don't see it because I simply don't exist on that level...

This reminds me of how they treated this one black character in a show called Invincible. Her name is amber (she was originally white in the comics I think) and the amount of hate that got directed at her because she didn't like the fact that her superhero boyfriend (Mark) couldn't manage his regular life and superhero life and kept stringing her along and lying to her because of it. I do agree that she should have been more understanding of his situation but why are so many people being more aggressive and hateful towards her and saying that she is the true villain and is worse than Mark's father who literally BEAT HIM UP and almost KILLED him, called his mom a pet (he was married to her for DECADES), believed everyone on earth was worthless and did not care if they died (and was willing to kill them), killed off a whole race of people (and probably more), killed other superheroes that he'd known and was friends with for years and has no remorse, and then lied and manipulated everyone about it. You got to be crazy to think that a teenage girl is worse than a literal terrorist, murderer, and abuser to everyone including his own son. I'm pretty sure everyone wouldn't be thinking this if amber was a white girl lol

the casting of the pjo show was really telling in terms of fandom racism. the author has done so much to showcase diversity within his publishing company, yet so much of the vitriol is directed at a 12 y/o black girl just because she doesnt match how they pictured her character in the books. they literally bullied leah off tiktok multiple times. even when they announced the show would have colorblind casting, fans were harassing artists who portrayed annabeth as black or percy as latino, for example. luckily my tumblr is pretty well curated so i didnt see it as much on there, but on algorithm driven sites like tiktok or ig a lot of artists or cosplayers would simply turn off comments bc of the harassment.

Someone made a fan page for the book and used a young girl hanging in a noose and called it "red lives matter". When I a queer black woman essentially a red of the real world pointed out how racist it was I was told I was a "snowflake" and "take things too seriously". Finally! Someone speaking out against this shit! Don't even get me started on the Fantasy fandom, it can get so bad that I don't even want to be associated with fantasy anymore, much less as a fantasy writer. For example, I had this happen the other day on a comment I posted among fellow Earthsea fans under a Studio Ghibli video no less on what we wished a book accurate film or show of the books would look like. Someone legitimately responded "I hope they don't go woke and cast too much POC in it"......The books' cast is literally all brown and black people.....Like, the only major white characters, is two white women, both of which were victims of a patriarchal system. But the fact that someone who claims to be a fan of these books can say that...Just, how on earth did you miss the mark this hard? And how can you call yourself a fan of Ursula K.LeGuin when you stand against one of the issues she's always been fighting tooth and nail against? In fact, this is the same book series she fought tooth and nail for when they wanted to whitewash Ged on the cover "Because it would sell better". Ged's described in the books as being reddish brown, and heavily dark skinned at that. Also sadly think this is likely the reason the books never blew up despite being one of the best fantasy series of all times within fantasy circles. Next to LOTR and others such as Harry Potter and Narnia, no one simply bothered to pick them up because Ursula K.LeGuin deliberately decided to center her fantasy series around brown and black characters. It's not the fault of those other writers, it's the fault of the general image of fantasy being and having always been made for a white audience and white audiences first and foremost by Western media. Especially since even nowadays, fantasy books that build their world on non-white cultures to this day never get as popular as those that typically lean to a aggressively European culture. Not to mention as a fantasy creator, who knows how many times I have to justify making my own characters black and brown more than I have to do for characters who are white and white passing, outside of very specific circles.

This video was an absolute breath of fresh air. I had noticed this kind of treatment of characters of color at times in fandom but I was never the type to engage in fandom much outside of complimenting artists for their art online since they absolutely deserve it for the time they put into their work (and on occasion a REALLY well written fanfiction). I'm not white, but I'm not black either. I'm just pretty mixed I suppose (seriously I took a DNA test out of curiosity recently and there a crazy amount of stuff going on there). As a Hispanic girl I realize that I do relate to some of the things you've mentioned. I remember looking at characters as a kid and thinking I could never dress up as them since I didn't look like them. (Although I did ignore those thoughts at times and dressed up as Merida for my birthday since she had curly hair like me and I liked her personality). This mentality continued on for a while until I met a friend who told me that sort of thing didn't matter. It made me want to try out cosplaying some day for fun at least. However, I still feel pretty hesitant at times about cosplaying a character that doesn't have light brown skin (think Alya or Katara). I guess I'm scared of how people would react at a convention if I were to ever go considering how I've seen people react online at times.

So I also recommend it to anyone that hasn't seen it yet. Also, I'm a POC who's barely involved in fandom at all but I hate that fandom racism continues to be a problem. I even sometimes wonder if it's worth trying to cosplay on TikTok sometimes. So far I've only cosplayed as a British white character from an anime I watched called Hellsing Ultimate. As of now, I want to try to cosplay as Peter Ballard from Stranger Things but I worry about potentially getting attacked for it since...he's portrayed by a white actor. Anyway, great video once again Harri!

Your channel has really helped me and many others learn about this stuff and be aware of how it rears its nasty head into EVERY fandom. If I hadn't known about your channel I would have never been able to point it out as well as I can now I think what really introduced me to fandom racism was the Left 4 Dead community. Everybody was so nasty towards Rochelle and made it seem like she was a bad person and every character hated her (which is completely false. She is liked by every character and is a generally very nice person) There are only 2 women in the game and Rochelle is the only black woman. So you could imagine how bad that went (Zoey is white. I do think the fandom was nasty towards Zoey in a different way but there is no doubt white men who thirsted over her were the worst when it came to Rochelle hate)

While I think fandom racism is definitely at its worst in cartoon fandoms (through what I've seen) it undoubtedly is bad in gaming fandoms too. Especially when it comes to black women Edit: Actually I do think most video games (especially first person shooter games like CoD) are worse with racism. Not even just racism but bigotry in general. I think bc cartoon fandoms generally tend to be bigger or just have more active fandoms they seem worse but thinking about it more they're definitely not as bad as gaming communities. Still bad tho

In certain cases, a lot of the shows spoken here treat the characters of color very much how a white character would be in the same situation. No real issue of race within the show yet the fans bring in their double standards where nobody asked. We've seen heroes/general protagonists clash out of heightened emotions plenty of times. Comics is full to the bring with good guys fighting each other over a misunderstanding before settling their differences to face their foes. However, the lack of characters of colors in these major roles often leads to those that do break this glass ceiling an open target for all. Suddenly, they can't make mistakes or even slight errors in judgement like any given white character. Nope. Fandom looks for any reason. Hypocrisy be damned. If "race didn't matter" as they try to claim, then they have super shallow readings of the text.

Wait wait, the Amphbia fandom is racist? Maybe I didn't see it because of the language barriers, but I'm just learning O-O Because from other fandoms I expected it more (Such SVFOE, I do not know how it was abroad, but in my country people were going for Marco, although in practice Star was a toxic person, seriously, I did not like her, and I watched because I hoped that something would develop there, you know what it looked like, and Star pissed me off at the moment, when she showed her aversion to the monster trying to become a better person, I don't remember the name of the episode, but Star pissed me off so much that I started to boil) I am scared of how much racism shows up in fandom (And I say this as a person who is not racist for obvious reasons), but racism is not the only thing I find, ableism happens too (This applies to me more), but the very fact that the "Amphibia" fandom has these types of features surprised me, because as I mentioned, I could not notice it through language barriers, I do not even know if the translator is interpreting me correctly, because although reading comes out tolerable (Although with longer sentences, the words start to overlap and I stop understanding anything), I have a drama with writing (So How does the translator translate into a word that I would prefer not to write, it is unfortunately not my fault, because I try to avoid negative words)

And with Chloe it looks like this that when she had this "Arch of Redemption" I even started to like her, but you know what came out, it pisses me off more about how Thomas treats her character, I understand, you want to create a character that will not change, but why the hell to build such a bow and give hope for character development, to at some point have "You know what? The status quo must go on" So yes, with Chloe pissing me off the use of "Status quo", which is the greatest damn thing that has been used for years, you give hope that the character will become a better person, so that, as I mentioned, you should go back and then pretend that it was not was quite common in old animations and less and less of this phenomenon, but unfortunately, it takes place and destroys the whole In addition, Chloe is a child abused by her mother, many of her features fit a child who wants to keep her balance when she is not there, as if the creator hadn't wasted this potential, I wouldn't feel frustrated (her character was annoying in the first one, I didn't like her myself) some hope began to emerge in the second, that her character would come out of the schematic, but then he was third and everything collapsed) What I feel for Chloe, annoyance, because seriously, wasted potential can be the most annoying, well, at least the fandom had a little fun writing fanfiction, but you know what it looks like, I didn't like Chloe in the first season, in the second season, I even started, and in the third it's known how it ended (I know, I repeat myself, I do not justify her behavior, but I would prefer for her to conclude at some point that she is hurting and she would start to change for the better than what we got, because this "false arc of redemption" gave hope, she is a bad person and I say it straight, but it would really be possible to do something about her character, because now we're back to the fact that Chloe is angry, and if she was actually bad, I don't know, she would be like Belos from TOH who is a credibly bad person, it feels like a kilometer and his story is so complementary that you feel dislike for him, Chloe has a problem with how she was led character) With Chloe I have problems with writing her and with how Thomas approaches her character (Because such an aversion to her character is something strange, in the sense that I have OC myself, which for obvious reasons stopped being liked by me, because with age I began to notice who they are for real, but you need to be able to control your aversion to your character, no matter how terrible it is, you have to create it sober, because now Thomas looks like that kid who, after an argument with his parents and a bad day at school, starts creating pictures or a story about how they all die in the most brutal way) So yes, in the first season I didn't like her (At most Lilia pissed me off more, but that's it), the second one influenced a different perception of her character (The scene with racism was in the first season, i.e. before this pseudo "Arch of Redemption"), And now I don't know how I feel about her character, because she had potential, but it was wasted

Guys like Geeks and Gamers along with The Quartering really ruin stuff like Prey and House Of The Dragon with their covert racism and sexism. One of them got called out by Zack Snyder this last year. That's really saying something...

Something I also notice is how stingy rural areas are to anything that's not white or straight.

I found it interesting to listen to the conversation and was surprised by some insight! Mainly, the comment about the word m****o. Before this video, I just thought that it was a description in the same vain that mestizo is (which is what I suspect I am; even when I was little, I get confused on the Black and White discourse because I know I am neither, so how do I feel about it?), to describe someone with mainly Black and White ancestry (in the same way mestizo is used for someone with mainly Indigenous and White ancestry). So I was surprised when I found out after looking up the term that this word is offensive, and now I am confused about the descriptor Mestizo (because I mainly use it to describe race, as it is a bit of a weird thing for me because I know my ethnicity and nationality, but not race). And thank you for the insight! I am also one with a hobby on drawing and storytelling and making characters of my own (and working on the same story since age 11) Recently, I was trying to be a bit more conscience about what I portray (as early as around 13, committed since 15-16) so thank you! :)
