Thank you Pascal for these videos about landing the skate, outside edging and pushing. I don't even have speed skates and this has taken my skating speed/efficiency up a level since I am pretty much self learned with the help of awesome people like you on youtube. One thing that I observed from your technique and have stolen :) is the leg recovery (I don't know if you have a video about that but it has made my stride a lot longer and more balanced/comfortable! )

I’ve been practicing inline skating in the apartment basement and the surface is extremely smooth (some surfaces are shiny). I’ve gotten used to the slippery surfaces and I can decently skate and turn. I can’t transition to the rough surfaces of the outside grounds. I’ve tripped over many time because of non-existent rocks.

It has no sense to speak about pushing to the ground, because the leg is already bearing the weight of the body. If I push more onto the ground, my body would be lifted up and this is not good in the inline skating technique, where the shoulders must always ideally stay at the same height with respect to the ground. It is rather more correct to say that the push must be done having just one foot on the ground (but this is also obvious). The base concept in the push, by the way, is more the "body weight transfer", than the "lateral" push itself. The body weight must be transfered from side to side, thus producing a more effective skate and then more power to the ground. If you want to have the perfect example, take a look at the technique of Enrico Fabris, I think he is the very best by far. He was an ice skater, but ice skating is also used as a training activity for roller skaters to improve technical gesture especially because it trains to lay the foot on the outer edge of the wheels and to transfer body from side to side.
@ThePascalbriand
@ThePascalbriand 4 жыл бұрын
Tommyavi hi Tommy thanks for your technical comment. I invite you to try a bit more about this concept and search for key about how a ground push will maintain more pressure without lifting you up if you don’t want. Ice speed skating is quite different in this... may be I’m totally wrong ;-) but ice will give you a regular grip the inline won’t give you if you don’t try to maintain this pressure. My humble Olympic experience on ice showed me not to try to apply ice technique on inline and that a tutorial for Inline technique defi et m’y not for ice technique . The body weight transfer you mention of enrico fabrics is amazing but will be far to be good for inline. I recommand you to watch my double push video tutorial to get how to move body weight transfert for inline. Thanks for this technical comment even if we don’t agree apparently ... the cool thing is that there are many technique and not one is magic and work for all. I hope to meet you once to speak about it ... on ice or on inline :-)
@Tommyavi
@Tommyavi 4 жыл бұрын
@@ThePascalbriand Hi Pascal, I think the ground push might be more a mental aid for keeping the legs strong, but is uncorrect in the physics point of view, in a leveled skating action the force you apply vertically to the ground is exactly the weight of your body (if you stand on one leg), unless you decide to push more downwards and that's the case you lift body and bump up & down. I was also a professional roller speed-skater in an a team trained by a renowned guy who insisted a lot on this concepts and also with the national team (of Italy)., and we worked a lot on these lines. We learned that much of the effort in speed skating is keeping the legs constantly bend at the correct angle and use them as lateral springs to transfer body weight from side to side, any other movement of the body center of gravity is a waste of energy. Yes, the behaviour of the skate on ice is different because once you are on the edges, thanks to the pressure the blade digs a trail on the ice thus giving a "limitless" grip (and this is what allows the short-trackers to turn with just one foot, thing which is not advisable on rollers). So on ice the grip is constant, yes, but as long as you don't keep the blade exactly perpendicular to the ice otherwise it slips: that's the reason why it is used for improving also roller technique, because ice forces to stay always on the edges, on the internal one for the external leg push, and on the external one for internal leg stand: this latter is important to improve body transfer and especially to make inline double push effective on the rollers. I have seen a lot of guys tring to perform the double push by just winding the internal standing leg but without moving body center of gravity, and this is equal to waste speed just the same way as when you want to slow down by winding the foots left to right. On indoor training, we were making slide-boarding also, for training side push and body weight transfer. When we experienced rollers slipage (for instance, very powerful skaters in turns on concrete ground or even indoor short-tracking), the main remedy was to use softer rubber rollers. There were people mixing up different rubber hardness rollers on the tips and on the rear of the train. At least, I am speaking about my training experience. Congratulations for arriving to take part in the olympics, my career wasn't so successfull :) but I always got interested in the movements study. And yes sure it would be funny to skate together! :)
@ThePascalbriand
@ThePascalbriand 4 жыл бұрын
Tommyavi i think you took to strict the meaning of pushing down. Please check again but i always say push down then to the side. The push down moment is to create grip on your wheels (cause we don’t have this ice grip effect) and this pressure is really needed to use some power... then push to the side. Also pushing to the side if we take things to strictly is very wrong. Pushing 100% to the side wouldn’t make us go forward. The truth is the vector between horizontal and vertical ... and I can tell you the most commun beginner mistake on inline is to apply mainly a side force without enought orientation in the down direction. Notice also that ice technique is not working for inline technique it’s really two different movement ... there are things we can’t do on inline and some other we can’t on ice. I like to teach it really differently. I feel you have less experience on inline cause you mention the word rubber instead of wheels. I invite you to test it more and experiment it. Anyway, it’s just video it’s just few technical info that go forward because of discussion like this. Like I am often say nobody is right... there are plenty of information and everybody can test them all and take what he want for himself... I’m right and you are right too.
@Tommyavi
@Tommyavi 4 жыл бұрын
@@ThePascalbriand I don't agree on this because in physics the grip itself depends on the vertical force on ground and on coefficient of friction. Once you transfer all your weight body on the support leg, there is no way to increase the vertical component of the force on the ground, because it is your own body weight! (Unless you add dynamics effects but as I said this mean bumping body center of mass up and down, which is detrimental for skating efficiency). And yes, obviously I didn't mean that the push is just lateral, but is one of the most important points coaches insist on most, because it's difficult to achieve. Contrarily to what you say, beginners tend to do the opposite, they tend to push backwards. The purpose of slideboard training is instead to teach skaters to push laterally to move body weight laterally. When I mention the word rubber I refer to the name of the MATERIAL of the wheels (of course I know they are called wheels :) ). On the market, as you also surely know, there are wheels made of rubbers with different levels of hardness (ranging from 80A to 88A approximately): the lower the number, the softer the wheel's rubber, the higher the coefficient of friction with the ground. Slippage can be improved/avoided by using softer wheels, taking tough into consideration also that they are slower in gliding (softer rubber produces more rolling friction), so in the end is a compromise according to the kind of ground/track/race/weather conditions/personal needs. You probably misread my comment to think I am a beginner, I have a lot of direct experience over many years, movement observation and study. From my side I can invite you to read qualified literature on the topic, you will find nowhere your concept on downpush. I wanted to comment it under a physical standpoint. Of course, if it helps you mentally in your technique and physiological behaviour it's certainly a useful help for yourself and I don't question this. Happy you, happy everyone. Surely there is not a unique truth, but there are also standards recognized by skating technicians and professionals as the most efficient behaviour for skating.
