I feel like game developers nowadays are focusing too much on graphics and not a lot on gameplay or story. A game does not need to be visually pleasing to be good. A game with bad graphics can be hugely entertaining as long as the story is well written and the gameplay doesn't rely solely on suspense and ill-timed jumpscares to try to make it good.

About the ball bouncing down the stairs, the first (or at least the most famous) instance of it is the 80s movie "The Changeling", in which a man moves into a big old house after his wife and daughter die. If I remember correctly, the ball first comes bouncing downstairs, and the guy just picks it up without much of a reaction and decides to get rid of it by throwing it into a river (I think it reminded him of his dead daughter). Then, when he gets home, down comes the ball again, still wet, and _now_ he freaks out and backs away from it in horror. Now THAT is how you pull off the ball bouncing downstairs scene. Also, did they really name the fucking guard Roy? Couldn't they give him a slightly more intimidating name? No offense intended to any Roys out there, but you gotta understand that "Oh god it's Roy!" doesn't really sound that scary. At all.
@Barbayat797 жыл бұрын
But at least Roy made it funny, doubt any other name would've been that much scarier ;) Ah, the Changeling what a great movie, one of the few horror films that actually crept me out. Should put it on my watch again list - I'm sure I got the DVD around here somewhere.

@AniGaAG7 жыл бұрын
Not to mention this was researched so badly, the dev didn't even make proper distinctions between things. Like, this is not a case of one person having multiple personalities, but of multiple separate minds inhabiting the same head, to put it in simple words (which psychology does indeed make a distinction between). Not to mention always this crazy people shtick - most people living with either of the above, be it an unhealthy or a healthy instance of either, are totally harmless, and an also not minor number of them manage to live completely normal lives despite their "headmates". Yeah, there are harmful instances, but... urgh. Certainly not *this* nonsense.

@proudblackjynx Not quite exactly.. but partially there!.. Alters aren't imaginary. Alters are parts of a personality not integrated, however, so you had that part down. However, every identity is an alter. Even the "host" or "main fronter".
@linkyboy85367 жыл бұрын
@sashasparrow Many people do know about their alters, but DID remains a hidden disorder for many which is just another way the brain tries to protect someone. So not knowing about them is very possible and is how a lot of people start out when their alters develop.

Really close but no cigari'm afraid. the "Fat Buddha" is Budai/Hotei was, ostensibly, a monk named after the cloth sack, in which he carried all his possessions. He is said to have lived around the early 10th century. Siddhārtha Gautama however lived around 1300-1400 years earlier, formed his teachings, accrued followers/disciples and presumably died sometime thereafter. Apparently Budai was of the Buddhist doctrine and it is said that he was another incarnation of the Bodhisattva. It is interesting how most mainstream religions tell of a great being that will lead humanity to greater things (Jesus, The Messiah, Buddha, Krishna, The Imam Mahdi, etc.)

I miss the old third person horror games that had actual gameplay elements. Now all we have are lazy first person horror games without any gameplay elements, just jumpscares and notes reading. Is it so hard to give the character a weapon and healing items? And don't give me that crap about horror games being more scary if we are unarmed, it's horse pockey. The silent hill series are some of the best horror game ever made, SH3 had a machine gun, a flame thrower and a freaking light saber, and still it was (and still) is scarier than all of these locker hiding simulators. If you can't think of anything else than removing weapons to scare the player then you don't understand horror.
@element11117 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree, although I think SH was always more of a thriller than outright horror. There's a very different feeling of tension knowing that you have a gun and the onus is on you to put your enemy down, isntead of turning around and fleeing ( often along paths streamlined by the devs ). Also, its cool to mix it up sometimes and keep the player guessing. Like SH4 with its apartment. You dont have weapons there and you keep thinking its the hub area, but suddenly everything flips half way through and it becomes dangerous.
@dmin57824 жыл бұрын
It’s all about atmosphere, gameplay and execution . Amnesia disarmed you entirely and is a first person game but is still one of the scariest, on par with SH. Outlast would fit this modern cliche but the execution is great. I think that’s the difference. Too many “horror” games did this mindlessly, hoping it would work without acknowledging the best of the older ones.
@huxleyable2 жыл бұрын
Even without weapons at least implement good stealth mechanics and intimidating monsters or enemies to hide from. Like you called it a hiding simulator but it's not even that, you don't hide from anything there's no real gameplay at all. I agree that no weapons = scarier is horseshit. When a game gives you a weapon and it's well executed of course, it means that whatever the hell is chasing you won't just jump scare you or loom around you, you have to defend yourself which can be scary. However, if you don't want weapons or combat then implement stealth and puzzles. SOMETHING to put SOME tension into the game.

WHERE'S THE FREAKIN' DOOR, BEN? >:[ *Edit: As for the maze and the not being able to sprint aspect, I can explain why so many games resort to doing these kinds of things. As a (sort of) game developer myself, (I play around with RPG Maker, big whoop) when making a game, you have to think of ways to make your game lengthy without just using nothing but cutscenes and walking. When you can't sprint, it adds to the overall length of the game. Some developers think they can get away with it and that players won't care, but this is simply not the case, obviously. Especially if there is a lot of walking from place-to-place in your game. And the maze? What can I say? Thinking up puzzles is very time-consuming work, especially if you're the only one doing it. So, game developers use the most easily thought-up "lengthy" puzzles as possible and it just ends up being incredibly damaging to your game because 1) It's not fun, and 2) It's incredibly lazy and everyone can see it. The different puzzles you can add to your game depend entirely on the style, and, when done right, very simple puzzles can make for either a very fun game, or a very boring game. Anyway, that's my two cents. :3
