I’ve never had a problem with those rounded poly bag inner sleeves. Many of my US Columbia LPs from the mid 1960s still have them. It may depend on storage conditions I would guess. I have got rid of all PVC outer sleeves in my collection though.

plasticizer from PVC foil. phthalates (oily substance) often used to make PVC flexible. These have the tendency to ofgas from the PVC foil.

With that Charlie Parker record, I think what happened is that the previous owner applied some kind of fluid to the record and then stored it in the plastic sleeve. They used to sell this horrible spray cleaner/anti-static product in some record stores back in the 70s that was oil based. I think it was made by a company called "Recoton" Your were supposed to spray the record with it and then wipe off the excess with a cloth. Then it left behind an "protective coating". The chemicals probably reacted with the plastic inner sleeve.

Hi Eddie. That makes sense. Strange thing is there were other records from this same collection that had their original plastic sleeves but didn’t have any reaction. One thing is for sure the Charlie Parker inner sleeve was definitely not the original to the record. That may be why it reacted and the others did not. ​@@TheVinylRecordMissionhi, new subscriber here. Yeah I remember those record sprays here in Australia and yes they did leave a residue on the plastic inners. When I discovered that, I wiped the record down again as well as the inner which I turned inside out and wiped it down. You might like to try a spin clean on that Charlie Parker. I'm confident it will clear the residue and maybe solve your surface noise issue too. I also have a second turntable with a dedicated mono cartridge for my mono LP's and I notice a great reduction in surface noise in older recordings. Cheers mate.

In 1980, as a teenager I bought 2 dozen thin plastic trace paperlike audiophile inner sleeves from a popular Canadian record store chain Kelly's Stereo Mart (closed in 1983) with the once iconic Kelly's logo printed on each sleeve. Sadly in recent times many of these sleeves have lost their integrity, breaking at the slightest bend or touch, I would guess the sleeves, like the dreaded PVC were off gassing in their own way until the plastic sleeve broke down and crumbled to powder and flakes. Luckily, all the records that were stored in them since the 1980's were not ghosted or damaged

I had something very similar happen to a couple of vinyl albums after I had replaced the original paper inner sleeves with archival quality polyethylene/rice paper inner sleeves. I immediately suspected it to be the new sleeves. However, the culprit actually turned out to be the degradation of an original Technics SL-D3 turntable mat, which had gone unnoticed. Oily vapors/gases being released from the breakdown of turntable mat were apparently being picked up by vinyl and condensing upon re-sleeving the record. Fortunately, the records cleaned up nicely and play fine. As a note, the offending turntable mat was removed, placed to the side and within about a week a visible oily sheen had developed on its surface.

I am 100% in your corner on the acid-free paper sleeves! The other critical part is those tabs are on the outside. A lot of the worst sleeve scuffs I have seen over the years came from the tabs being on the inside (especially on card stock sleeves). Your demo was great. I have put hundreds of records in those over the years and taken the care to insert and remove the record carefully each time. Zero issues with scuffs (or acid damage/off-gassing). I am using the MoFi-style inners now for less static and dust (no issues yet), but quality, acid-free paper inners are very acceptable. As for that first record, it often seems like the more rigid the type of plastic, the greater risk of reactivity. I know that is too general to be of much help, but my basic rule of thumb is just keep rigid plastic sleeves (inner and outer) away from records. That will probably save the day 75% of the time. As for the remaining 25%, I admit I am still kind of just crossing my fingers.

Yes we are in agreement again. Knowing how to use record storage supplies properly and carefully erases the negative myths about perfectly good products. Acid free paper inner sleeves are perfectly acceptable record storage options.

Rule of thumb: PVC's = BAD. Unstable. Leaches & outgasses. Process accelerated by temperature fluctuations. Polypropylene: (commonly used in the UK in the 60's + some US labels such as London, Columbia... stable and perfectly fine as long as no cleaning residue left on the record. Caveat: cleaning residues left on vinyl can interact with the polypropylene contacting it, causing that thing called 'bag rash.' It is NOT the poly itself, nor the vinyl, its the active ingredient interfacing the two thats the culprit. Clean clean clean! Polyethylene (audiophile inners, Japanese inners, UK inners starting mid-70's, some US labels ca. 1980 onward). Best. Very stable. Paper: Perfectly fine. Acid free is best. However even old paper that tones (browns or tans) is not harmful to the vinyl itself. Remember kiddies: always make sure your vinyl is thoroughly rinsed squeaky clean before sleeving.

There is a video on KZbin that adresses this problem. I can't remember if it dealt with the record or the cover. At the same time, I recently found a Frank Strozier Jazzland LP with a fairly uniform film on the entire record. I kept it, thinking that someday I' d buy the recommended fluid. So the video probably dealt with the problem on the record. (I'm getting old and forgetful😊.) The fluid might cost more than the value of the LP(?)

I had some records in high density polyethylene frosted rice paper sleeves and they were left in the cold car and got similar marks, I thought it might be condensation then they warmed up the marks were there. I also had some CDs in the rice paper, HDPE frosted sleeves in the cold car ,then brought them in house a week later and they had the rippled marks ,so cold damp to hot might cause it even on the HDPE sleeves

The first Uk pressings of Pink Floyd The Wall often have had the pvc title sticker having gassed the first LP. I have a copy that has the shadow of the rectangular title sticker on side one of the first LP.

PVC sleeves (inner and outersleeves) are causing the biggest problems. If it's on a record I come across when I am out shopping (and I want the specific album), I immediately look at the condition of the record sleeve and the record itself. If it's not OK, I won't buy it. And that happens a lot. If there's no harm yet, I might take chance and removed the sleeve immediately and clean the record. But I rather look for a copy that hasn't got such sleeves if I have the choice.

They are costly, but I have had an ultrasonic brand for three plus years. It can clean up to 10 records at a time. Run you around $1,000.

I've seen old thick plastic outer covers look exactly like that. When you peel the sleeve away from it it leaves a horrible sticky glue type substance on the LP sleeve. I have been told you can clean that off the cover but they weren't desirable enough records to bother repairing.

Man those PVC outer sleeves are terrible too. A friend of mine gave me an “audiophile” quality Johnny Cash album that came in one of those, no inner sleeve. I didn’t play it for years. Took it out a few years ago when I was ultrasonic cleaning my whole collection; unplayable.

Great tutorial on handling records stored in paper sleeves to prevent scuffing. The old "rice or onion" paper sleeve may actually be glassine paper, which is made from wood pulp. The US post office still uses glassine envelopes for stamps.

Umm I’m not sure if you actually think those plastic inner sleeves came from the late 50’s early sixties or you are being sarcastic? No there were no poly sleeves used then only paper, light thin paper. The thicker sleeve are not safe to use but the thinner ones are ok. The lighter poly sleeves are used a lot in Japanese pressings.

I actually have records from the 1950s that are still SEALED in their original plastic inner sleeves like you saw in the video. The plastic inner sleeve from the Charlie Parker record is clearly an after market sleeve. But the other records in the video are in fact the ORIGINAL plastic inner sleeves that were included in those original 1950s U.S. pressings. I was not being sarcastic. I’m going to do a video in the near future with sealed copy so you can see for yourself.

Well I had that after having used a certain German cleaning technique called ANTISTAT.... the shite liquid leaves those marks even after completing drying overnight, so someone used that crap thinking it was good..... I've had to re clean all of the ones cleaned in that crap ANTISTAT liquid.... So it was most probably cleaned by someone conned like me.... By the way after using that liquid and playing a brand new record, by the time one side finished there was a ball of crap in the stylus.... It's that liquid.... AVOID...
