Making A Blowgun: Life In The Amazon Jungle

The Blowgun is one of the most recognizable hunting weapons in the Amazon jungle region. Kids generally learn at a very young age to use a blowgun by hunting insects and small animals.
South American blowguns are different from ones we use in North America in that they are generally longer, and they are shot upwards into the trees. The mouthpiece doubles as a handle when shooting in this fashion.

I have one that was given to my grandfather. Was made by an old man back back in the 60s in the Amazon. It’s definitely not split the barrel is incredibly smooth and straight. It’s made from a hardwood.

Would be great if you could make a video how to build a blowgun in normal forests like the one where you normally fo your videos or like the forests in germany. I think many of the tasks would be very similar for example the glue because you csn gather glue from birch bark :)

@Anthony Maurice The jungle really does provide all. Differently shaped stones were used, and different grades of rocks with different properties were selected for different purposes. Even for this, one would have to become fairly adept and skilled at making tools - to make further tools. 'Flint knapping', as it was called in neolithic (?) Europe, was as important a skill at making tools, as was using the tools that it made, as was using those tools to hunt or whatever.

It's a very valid point that many of us are completely inept at bushcraft. However, one shouldn't be too hard on oneself: we are extremely skilled at living in *our* current-day lifestyles. Think of how much we have to teach our kids. That realisation makes you, and *should* make you remark on how skilled we actually are in our own fields, and daily lives. Living is not 'easy' in any generation or lifestyle. That said, I really do admire these guys, and sincerely HOPE that there will be living records like them of these fine, sustainable practises in centuries to come. Culture is amazing. It should be preserved at all costs. Our 'open borders' practises does not help that in *our* cultures.

How did the material for wrapping the outside get flat? When they stripped the inside out of the special vine 13:34, the result was a round cord. I guess you didn't show them flattening it out? Oh, wait, it was the OUTSIDE of the vine that they used, not the inside! Which was sort of naturally flattened.

Thanks for videoing & show this! At the 'gluing the halves together' part, I was wondering how they were going to keep the glue from spilling over into the bore, if they were going to glue them like woodworkers would do, by gluing the edges first and then tie/clamping the halves after. But they don't glue the edges directly, they tie/clamp first, then brush hot glue onto the seam, apparently letting capillary action suck the glue just partway into the join and not go into the bore at all.
