Part 1 Questions and Timestamps:
WWSD & Ammunition
01:39
Samuel J
With the Army looking for a 7.62x51 caliber service rifle would that effect a change in your wwsd rifle project?
03:30
James K
For WWSD, you seem to be neglecting 62gr improvements such as soft-points (LEO rounds) or Mk.318/SOST. Are you still reevaluating the ammo choice? Keep up the good work!
05:00
Pascal P
If AR-15s suddenly disappeared, what would you get instead?
07:21
Kevin H
If you guys WERE going to design a bullpup for use, as Karl said in the WWSD vs Tavor videos, as a SMG with rifle capabilities, what caliber would you chamber it in (expecting ideal resupply no matter the choice) and why?
2G-ACM and Matches
12:14
Eamon
Would you guys ever consider doing a series or a match focusing on revolvers? I have seen you guys run shotguns and older bolt action rifles in matches before and even do videos on some of these less modern designs but have yet to see something similar in regards to revolvers. Personally I would be very interested in seeing a revolver video in a similar format to the pistol grip only shotgun (comparing revolvers to semi autos or other firearms).
15:33
Mark S
Have you considered incorporating 'malfunctions' into 2 Gun ACM? Have snap-caps loaded into peoples magazines so that they have to cycle their action or potentially transition to their pistol depending on the stage.
18:03
Christopher B
I have enjoyed watching the matches you and Ian have competed in while wearing outfits and using gear and weapons of various time periods or conflicts. It gives an interesting insight into the practicality and effectiveness of the various setups/weapons. My question is, have you or Ian considered competing using prohibition/gangster era weapons and gear? With one of you using a law enforcement setup, and the other utilizing what was available to gansters/Mafia of the time period? Thanks
21:16
David G
Has anyone ever shot a 2 gun with 22LR.......? And if it can't knock a plate over how would you score that? Not sure why but it was a random thought after watching one of your 2 gun video's.
22:11
Thomas B
Where can I find listings of shooting events like Hard as Hell and 2GACM, and how far in advance are dates usually set?
Gun Laws and Education
23:28
Arne K
If possible, can you guys please give us non US viewers a general overview of US gun laws? Sometimes I watch your stuff and thing: “how the …. can they actually do this legally?”
34:32
Matisse E
What has been or would be the most effective way to educate the general civilian population in how to safely handle firearms?
38:59
Marlon S
Why are so many shooters such bad shots? Coming from a full-bore background I'm constantly astonished by the lack of fundamental marksmanship principles many people online show. Poor trigger technique, flinching and no awareness of natural point of aim are all par for the course. Why don't people want to further their skills? And have you thought about some videos focusing purely on the basics of marksmanship?

Couldn't agree more on public school firearm safety. For better or worse, guns are part of our country, our culture and embedded in the very document that is the foundation of our government. If the dos and don'ts of other rights are to be taught, I think it's irresponsible to avoid (and demonize, actually) the most fundamental safety training of something pretty much everyone is going to encounter at some point in their lives.

Karl is also wrong about the transport requirements for firearms in California. It's totally fine to have ammunition, loaded magazines etc in the same container as the firearm, as long as it is not in (or attached to) the firearm. I'm not sure where this myth came from but it's one I've heard repeated way to often.

Ignorance about firearms extends to the elected officials who are writing the laws as well... there was a US senator, I don't remember her name, who proposed that instead of trying to ban guns there could be a prohibitive tax on magazines, so that when people shot all the bullets out of them they couldn't get more. She didn't understand that magazines were reloadable.

This is why I love this channel. They are able to look at a situation from a logical, non politically biased perspective or at least do so on camera. The unfortunate us "us vs them" mentality in this country is extremely sad and is what turns me away from a lot of other channels. Thanks for the amazing videos guys!
@MrBandholm

With the risk of being wrong, "us vs them" is not just something in the US ;) Regarding "non political", well one just have to see how much Karl has to keep his thoughts in check :P But seriously, this channel, and forgotten weapons, does the right thing, and does it better that any other channels I have seen... They have fun, but are serious... None of that shooting a melon to pieces or a soda bottle, just for cheap effects(!) and that is what makes all the difference.

I do my best to keep those thoughts in check because my opinions on that stuff don't matter. Logical conversations are what matter and we, as individuals, can draw our own conclusions from hopefully as uncorrupted a data source as is possible. I've never wanted anyone to tell me what to think, and I don't want to ever tell anyone else what to think (regardless of how some people perceive our content erroneously). ~Karl

@Fenris B I've never lived in the southwest, but spent a week there in August once. It was hotter than it seemed to me, but just wetting my tee shirt cooled me off for a minute. I hail from Missouri, the summers here rarely have 2-3 days over 100F, but it's not unusual to have 30 days in the 90's. And it's a humid heat. Where just setting in the shade will soak your clothes in sweat. And unless there's a breeze, you just kinda stew in your own juices. But this is where I was raised, I have no real desire to live any further north (I don't enjoy the cold),but I would love to live in Northern Arkansas. The Ozark mountains are a beautiful place. There's just no money there for my trade. So I visit there in the summers to float and fish the crystal clear rivers. Cheers, and a Happy Holiday season to you and yours.

110°F is tough but we have temps at that level here in Alabama but we have really horrendous humidity that makes it even more challenging. The Southeastern US has lower summer temps, on paper, but when the heat index is figured in, it's miserable here also. Our running joke is that we have 10 months of summer 6 weeks of fall/spring, and maybe 2 weeks of actual long sleeve weather.

I believe the main merit of bullpups that should be looked at is not directly the shorter OAL, but that the layout allows for delivering rifle level ballistics from a carbine size package (or rifle carbine ballistics from an SMG sized package). From my understanding, the 5.56 cartridge was designed to be fired from a 20" barrel and when shot in barrels that are increasingly shorter than that, increasing amounts unburnt powder is wasted with every shot and velocity is lost. 5.56 depends on velocity to tumble/fragment reliably in tissue to deliver stopping power otherwise it leaves a rather insignificant wound comparatively, at least according to army ballistic research. I forget the exact velocity a 5.56 bullet stops reliably tumbling/fragmenting but I remember that when fired from an M4 the bullet slowed to that velocity significantly sooner than an M16, and for the 10" Mk18 the barrel is so short it actually never achieves that velocity. So, a 5.56 bullpup rifle the size of a Mk18 could have the advantage of retaining bullet fragmentation capability due to the longer barrel length, and a bullpup rifle the size of an M4 can potentially have the bullet velocity of an M16. However, for a competition rifle, I don't think bullpup rifles make any sense at all. Lethality isn't relevant, but ergonomics are. For combat/service rifle, I think they at least provide some consideration between conventional operation and increased terminal effectiveness, depending on the caliber. But that's just my take for whatever it's worth, not a contention by any means.

I shot a .22lr 2 gun a few years back (it was a pre-match to a 3 gun competition) and it went ok , but slow. They used a lot of those small silhouette steel targets. So some stages might have 2 dozen or so small knock overs plus stationary targets. Don't think they do it anymore. For those interested in .22lr I would look for steel challenge matches.

Great Q&A, but I noticed a thing that needs a correction. I'm a Californian, the private party transfer firearm does not have to be on the approved list if you're doing it face-to-face. It has to be on the approved list only if you're shipping the firearm to another FFL, or if you give it to a fun store to sell on consignment. For example, gen 4 glocks are not on the approved list, but I could buy one from an LEO if I did a face to face ppt.

We have a hunters safety course in West Virginia (at least central WV) that is taught in 8th grade where the state police teach students for a week how to safely handle bolt, pump, breakaction, and semi firearms as well as hunting safety. It is an opt-put course but it's exactly what you described because they are part if the culture and around but also hunters are everywhere so even if you don't hunt it's important to understand it and be safe in the woods.

I agree with Ian's suggestion of some kind of competency test, or at least an intro gun safety video, at public gun ranges. I have always considered public ranges highly dangerous for this very reason. Some ranges obviously recognize this problem as well, since I noticed one of the newest ones established near me actually has somewhat armored stall dividers, and made a point of advertising as much, just in case some dunce happens to not only be pointing a gun somewhere other than downrange and also manages to fire it while doing so. I have a relevant, humorous (depending on your humor, considering this is in the past and did not result in an accident) story. I took someone to a range in order for him to try out shooting some 1911s for the first time. This was an outdoor range, with simple shooting tables 5 or so feet apart. Before going, I had already explained to him how the platform functions multiple times, with a mechanically similar airsoft gun. He still managed to create a situation in which he's fiddling with the gun while it is pointed to the side, almost toward me, while asking me how to disable the safety. I was on his left (Thankfully I was in the furthest left lane). The man on his right had already started making incredulous glances over at him. I immediately told him to keep the gun pointed downrange, and once he did, I noticed that the safety had already been off that entire time, and told him as much. The man on his immediate right turned ghost white and had this look of terror on his face, but said nothing and did get back to shooting once I corrected the situation. This man grew up shooting various types of guns on a ranch, which makes this story even more relevant when it comes to range safety. He had already fired off a few magazines without issue before this. Every time I go to a range this event comes back to mind, and I wonder whether or not somebody in a neighboring lane is going to, intentionally or not, muzzle somebody. It could be someone who had never held a gun before, or someone that's come to that range on occasion for years. You never know.

re: california. thanks for addressing us, much appreciated. as far as sales, you were close, but not quite. PPT (private party transfer) does go thru an FFL, and there is a 10 day waiting period, but the gun does not have to be on the roster you alluded to. i can buy off roster guns (like gen4 glocks) from a private party, but not buy the same gun at the retail level. at the retail level it absolutely must be on the roster. re the waiting period, there's the 'no sooner than 10 days' rule, but also 'must be picked up within 30 days', or you start the process again. so, if you live in so cal and buy in nor cal, you have 2 long drives, more if you miss the 30 days window. re: a benefit to PPT is that this state limits your handgun purchases to 1 in 30 days at the retail level. PPTs are excluded from that, as are long guns, so PPTs give us some of the freedoms that our neighbors to the east have. (sacramento is trying to change all of that to make gun ownership even more onerous. our laws are completely nonsensical, and as far as we can tell, they're only there to add hurdles to gun ownership.) thanks for thinking of us. also, glad you addressed the caliber question, i had wondered the same thing (55gr, 62gr, 77gr, ...)

Is too show knowledge of the equipment, how to operate, appropriate behaviour ( belay device, knots, interaction with other people ) a simple demonstration is required when visiting a new gym for experienced climbs for the first time (5 min) a membership is given when attending your regular gym ( no need for the demonstration) and training and supervision is given to new and inexperienced climbs until a level of competence is achieved, allowing full access. Re: Marlon S, question about why so many shooters are bad shots. Excellent question! I shoot a lot at a local range, and also volunteer as a range safety officer there. I get to observe a LOT of shooters. And I've been struck by the same questions. Why are so many people who come to the range bad shooters, and, the bigger question is, why do so few of them seem to want to get better? I am baffled by this. With almost anything I do, I try to be good at it, and I try to get better at it.

The officers who ambushed Bonnie and Clyde had at least 1 Thompson, and I'm pretty sure they had a BAR, in addition to pistols. I'm pretty sure they had another full auto weapon, though my memory is a bit fuzzy at the moment.

I definitely think shooting in the desert is different than at a range. I've seen the bullet holes in lane partitions, people need to prove to know or be shown how to manipulate a gun for their own and those around them's safety. I've seen way too many shooters turn a handgun 90* to manipulate the slide and sweep the shooter next to them.

Follow up question ( although i'm not the guy that asked the question about the ar15 disappearance ): What caliber do you think the AR18 and its derivatives would be chambered in if the AR15 and 5.56 had not made an appearance and would there have even been a AK74? As far as I understand russians kept the AKM until someone came up with 5.45, because they saw the capabilities of 5.56 in vietnam, so if vietnam and russian afghanistan would have been fought with 7.62 on both sides due to american fascination with stopping power and russian inertia and satisfaction with the existing design, would 5.45 even have happened?

On the point about teaching about guns in school I live in North Carolina and at least at my school in 9th grade health and fitness we did have a lesson on firearm safety. It was mostly focused on hunting safety and we didn't do any handling of any guns but it did go over the basics of what a sight picture looks like and what gauge meant and to never point a gun at anyone loaded or not. Idk if this is standard curriculum in North Carolina or if it was just something my teacher or school decided would be good and I'm pretty most everyone at my school was extremely familiar with guns already because NC is a relatively gun friendly state but it was good to see nonetheless

Great points about competence, and squelching ignorance. Just so u know, private party transfers between us Kalifornia subjects are actually exempt from the "safety roster", as are consigned guns, curio and relic handguns, and most or all single action revolvers. This has caused price increases in the marketplace, especially for guns that are no longer on the roster or are no longer made. The waiting period is 10 days, as you believed. And yes, no NFA stuff at all here. Great video guys.

In CA, there's a roster for acceptable handguns, but with rifles it's based off of features. So I can build a WWSD 2020 rifle as long as it has a grip fin and don't have a flash hider or a foregrip. It's not illegal to own and use standard capacity mags, but only police can actually purchase them at this point. Alternatively you can have a regular pistol grip and a fixed mag, but that's silly. The rub is that when purchasing a complete rifle, it needs to be CA compliant before entering the state. So a lot of companies don't offer CA configured versions, and most FFLs aren't gonna install the grip fin/take off a flash hider for you. Also most counties no longer approve concealed carry permits, so you can't legally carry for the most part.

Where I live in California there is a gun range that requires both a competency test as well as putting 3 rounds through a target at 15 feet with the gun you want to use on their range. I scoffed at it at first but after seeing bullet holes in the walls and shot up target carriers at all the other ranges I have to give them some credit.

What Ian said at the gun range is true in NH. All outside ranges I've been to are members only and you need to take a safety competency course and pass the course to be accepted. Even indoor rental ranges have you fill out a forum and ask what your competency is with rifles and pistols. Doesn't stop everyone from being unsafe but atleast maybe the RSO will be able to watch them closer and correct any safety violations.personally for me I haven't had to worry about it because of how serious my father taught me about gun safety when I was a child starting with BB guns then moving from there. Even with BB guns he had me act is though they were a real firearm.

Where I live in West Virginia (Wv) is right across the border from Maryland (Md) and the situation is very similar to that of Arizona and California, including which side of the river you're on. In this case, the river is the Potomac. If I walk halfway across the bridge that separates Wv and Md, while carrying my AR15 pistol, I have now become a felon, as they are banned in the latter and I don't have a Md carry permit. Wv also has constitutional carry of a firearm but it's next to impossible to get a carry permit in Md. If I were carrying one of my AK rifles across the border, it would be the same situation, as they're not compliant with their rifle laws.

Sorry to ask once again, but this time you said it yourself- the intended engagement range for assault rifles is 300 yards or less. Yet you still want to push the AR-15 into a DMR role and apply the old rifleman doctrine and criteria to it... Are you truly convinced that an intermediate cartridge gun is up to that? (I'm not)

Safe handling of firearms can be taught in 5 minutes. The people who don't understand it can't be made to understand it by spending more time, money, and effort. I've met a couple of them.

When I was a kid in school we actually had rangers that came around to the schools and discussed firearms safety and water (boating, etc) safety. Not happening today. P.S. That really wasn't that long ago. BTW I carried a pocket knife all the way through public school and college.
