My son is on the spectrum and he used to cry whenever we would sing him happy birthday so we stopped until he started to binge Futurama and now we sing the “What day is today, it’s Dex’s birthday, what a day for a birthday, let’s all have some cake!” and he likes that. You gotta respect it if people react badly to stuff, it doesn’t matter if it makes you happy if it’s about them.

He's 14 now and doesn't get upset anymore, he can say about 30 words or so but he can definitely say, "Stop Mom" if I sing haha. I do it because it makes him laugh and when he says stop I do because I always want it to be funny. 💕

25:00 I get where the coworkers are coming from. For many people, it’s hard to imagine not liking birthday celebrations, so they might have thought they were doing something nice for her. However, they should have respected her wishes. If someone says they don’t like something, especially repeatedly, it’s important to listen and respect their preferences. In this case, the coworkers were in the wrong. They ignored her clear requests and did what they wanted, not considering her feelings. While they might have had good intentions, it doesn’t excuse disregarding her wishes. Respecting someone's boundaries is crucial, even if their preferences are hard to understand. So yes, the coworkers are the "scallywags" here. They should have respected her wishes and not forced their idea of a celebration on her.

Completely agree. They set a boundary, expressed it on multiple occasions to multiple people, and then were guilted for being upset their boundary wasn't respected at all. That 1st story hit hard man. My grandpa died like 2 months ago and I have only now cleaned up my room. But during those 2 months my mom would always come into my room and get mad cuz my room was an absolute mess. And I wanted to clean it I really did but i wasn't in the headspace to do so and I had so many tests to study for that I fell into a depressive rut and had trouble even getting out of bed. Basically my only two chores were the dishes and cleaning my room, and my family kept calling me lazy and asking me why I couldn't do such simple tasks, and at the time, I didn't know how to articulate the fact that those "simple" chores felt impossible and also just pointless when I didn't feel I had a reason to get out of bed in the morning, to face another day, and just existing took all of my energy. I agree with this, especially when they're able to retire in their dream life. She was a good wife and a good mom and deserves a good retirement, not a world-shattering confession that likely break up their marriage and ruin the last decade or so of her life and maybe even make her homeless or find her moving into a small uncomfortable apartment alone all so her husband can get it off his chest. That's the epitome of selfish. Let her live her last years in peace.
@nabaaaeАй бұрын
In that story OP thinks that his guilt and unhappiness over is infidelity is enough of a punishment. That's inherently unfair. It's his wife's decision whether or not to stay with him after she finds out the whole truth, and he's taking the choice away from her. He thinks (and he's trying to convince us) that he's being selfless by keeping it a secret, but in reality he's just too afraid to face the consequences. And maybe after telling her, they can work through it and he'll finally be happy. I don't think he deserves to be miserable the rest of his life because of one mistake.

The humor about these depression messes is this: No matter how bad it seems, no matter how long it's been building, it'll get cleaned up in an hour or two when you're ready. It'll also feel very cathartic! Don't beat yourself up over it. Don't fret that you're broken (you're not - you're behaving like a human being). Just keep waking up each day (even if that's at 2pm - no shame) and looking forward to being more mentally healthy at some point. Once you're finally there, that mess will be long gone. You matter! You don't have to be gone or disappear for people to know that you matter. Ask for a hug, talk to that person you just hugged, own your stuff, and ask for accountability and their ear occasionally.

But in that same vein, I absolutely understand the procrastination and the putting it off. Well I do not have depression, I do have ADHD and anxiety and sometimes you just can’t do it. I find the best way to do it is a little bit at a time. Maybe you start with your nightstand. And then you move onto the other nightstand. And then you do the left side of your closet and then the next day you go to the right side of your closet. And then so on and so on. Just a little bit as much as you can handle and at your own pace. 24:43 also for this part I’m going to say no. It would be murky if they hadn’t told their coworkers ‘hey I’m uncomfortable with this whole thing please don’t celebrate my birthday’ but they told EVERYONE IN ADVANCE! That they were uncomfortable and did not want this. It was no longer about them being a spoil sport and not wanting to celebrate, but the fact that they stated their boundaries and their coworkers completely trampled all over them. If their coworkers wanted to a reason to throw a party and have cake they could have said hey we bought a cake for OP’s birthday but they don’t want to be bothered about it please respect that and enjoy the cake. Or found some other reason to celebrate. At the end of the day it doesn’t make the reason if someone says they are uncomfortable about something then others need to respect that.🙂

As a man in my ‘30s with a lot more life experience than the people in the first story, IT’S A MESSY ROOM! If your friends care about your room being messy, they’re not really your friends. If they were actually your friends, they would help you clean up and help you through your depression.

It's really great to see you bond with your sister in this fun yet relaxed way, and how you both are able to express your differing viewpoints about these situations.

Related to the first story, Jéssica really said it. Life gets busy. I’m working 8 hours a day while doing my master’s thesis and my room gets so messy, but I’m so overwelmed with everything lately I just wanna rest

As a 30yo single male, with one older brother, being part of this sister dynamic was great. Had the chatter on in the background, gasped at the same times, laughed at the same stuff. Cozy. Thanks Kris

The cheating husband one is so hard, and I'm not even sure there is a "right" answer or whether it's subjective depending on your spouse and their wishes. I know that if I were the wife in that situation, I would want to know so that we were living in honesty with each other and so my spouse can find peace, whatever the outcome.

With the Pastry thing, IMO, and also as I've had something like that happen, won't the question "Do you want something??" Also cause problems? Like "You know I'm on a diet, why aren't you supporting it and trying to make me eat pastries and remain fat? I don't want a pastry! You're doing this to be malicious!"
@AliceB07 ай бұрын
No you're misunderstanding. It's not about him or what he did. She is just uncomfortable with being on a diet and is taking her frustrations out on him. If a partner treats you like this, leave them.
@cjpietropinto92937 ай бұрын
Pro tip. My husband will ask "I'm getting ... I know you're watching what you're eating, is there something else I can get you." Works a treat. We're currently 21 years married.

I feel like the guy that cheated on his wife years ago and now wants to tell her is being selfish and just wants to relieve his own guilt. Telling his wife now will break her. He needs therapy before he does anything. Her finding out will open a wound and will feel like it just happened, even tho it was years ago. He needs to fix himself and get advice from a professional. Before he hurts his wife for his own conscience. What good can come from that confession? Personally if my wife had cheated on me 15 years ago, I don't think I'd want to know.
@heidiullrich9667 ай бұрын
I agree with you 100%. Confessing would destroy her. Your comment was exactly what I was thinking. He needs to keep his mouth shut and deal with his own guilt for his wife's sake, at this point.

I literally CAN'T eat sweets. If I do I feel like complete garbage physically, I get heart palpitations, I get anxiety, my brain gets foggy, and it's just not a good existence. But I LOVE sweets. So getting me a cake that I can't eat but expecting me to stand around and be happy that there's cake that I can't partake in would just be cruel.
@westonisntsilly7 ай бұрын
thats what i was thinking! i think that if he had gotten the girlfriend something from the bakery it could also feel like hes not respecting her choice of going on a diet by continuing to get her sweets when she said she didnt want any. sorry if im misinterpreting what you said 😓

as someone with anxiety and a.d.d. i struggle with even brushing my teeth, i have to put a reminder on my phone to do it otherwise i won't. there have been days where i just refused to because the feeling of the toothbrush on my teeth makes me nauseous. so the thought of cleaning my room and having family members telling me my room is "gross" really pisses me off internally. it's not like its "gross" either, it's literally just clothes that are folded and in a pile. i have a small room and everything looks bigger than it is. so the feeling of being told the place i spend my free time in is called "disorganized" and a "endless pit" really makes me mad. my point is: if someone did that to me (first story) i would be livid and want to knock someone out.

When it comes to the birthday girl i feel her. Some people have a social anxiety and feel uncomfortable when people at work do the whole birthday thing. For some people the whole birthday thing, being sung to, given cake blowing out candles, or given gifts especially in the work place is just too much attention then makes you feel obligated when this obligation is only going to bring on more social anxiety.
@frozenfantasy24587 ай бұрын
Yes, and although obv it wasn’t this girls situation I was also thinking about how some people don’t celebrate birthdays for cultural or religious reasons as well. So even more reason to respect someone saying they don’t want it, there are a lot of reasons that it could be uncomfortable for a person.
