This was my Touareg and I chased the problem for almost a year. I got tired of ruining the batteries and decided to let the true electrical guru fix it. Ivan did a fantastic job and communicated with me during the entire process. I couldn’t of asked for better service. I definitely was not taking it to a VW stealership. It’s now back to being a dependable awesome 32 mpg terrific vehicle. Thanks again Ivan!!

Good design for the battery if you stop and think about it. What is the most common battery issue, cold weather. The battery placed under the seat is one of the most intelligent places for it. The size is a bonus too. You don't have to worry about under power ever. Everyone complains about engineering but IMO, 4 seat bolts to get to a gigantic battery is not a huge deal

If the Touareg is anything like my Q7 of the same generation (it probably is), the seat can be tilted out of the way if you just remove the front two triple squares. It's kinda tight (sucks pulling out the ~70lb battery) but it's easier than taking the entire seat off.

I grew up years ago learning Fahrenheit and changed to Celsius when Australia changed to metric in the seventies . Find Celsius so much easier based on freezing and boiling points of water for zero to one hundred degrees. Hopefully you get to replace the module and we can see it all work correctly.

I had a related issue with a door module on a 2011 Scirocco. One day for no apparent reason the driver’s window dropped a few inches while I was at work. When trying to close the window it would now go to the top and come back down again, leaving another gap of a few inches. Fortunately it was a dry day so I just drove home with the window as it was. VCDS showed no fault codes for that module and the procedure for resetting the window’s travel (taking the window to its extents and holding the switch for a few seconds) did nothing either. So the next logical step for me was to disconnect the battery and then reconnect it. Pressed the up switch and the window went up and stayed up, pressed it down and window went down, and it’s worked perfectly ever since. CAN-based cars are mobile networks, I’m a computer technician and sometimes “off” isn’t truly off until you disconnect the power completely. Apart from the inconvenience of leaving the window open it would have been interesting to see if my issue was also incurring a parasitic loss like this one, unfortunately I’ll never know as the problem was resolved before I had to dig any deeper.

I have a 2017 Range Rover Sport (3.) L diesel) and it was a no start a week ago. Cluster was a Christmas tree...anyway it seemed to be a battery issue so I started diagnosing. Similar to an issue you had a while ago where the Autel was showing 11.4 v but the battery actually had 12.4 v. I started suspecting either the Gateway (GWM) or the module on the battery, but they both tested OK. It turned out that water had gotten into the ECM and destroyed it...but that's not why I'm commenting... It turns out that JLR uses a Bosch system, which is what I assume is on this VW. Buried in the workshop manual is a statement that you should only charge the vehicle via the post under the hood, and NOT directly at the battery. The reason given was that it will likely lead to failure of the BMS - the battery maintenance module that is attached to the negative post of the battery. At one point you had considered doing that, and I just wanted to pass along that Bosch says not to.

I have a feeling the power reset of that module is only a temporary fix as no doubt the customer has been here before, like when replacing the car battery, it would have ‘reset’ that module and it would be fine for a while after, and then it would start all over again! Look forward to Part 2!

2004 V10 Touareg, 500K miles. Dreaded battery drain problem. Occurred at the same time my outside door lock. button stopped locking the car. I put a amp meter on the battery under the seat (which is easy to flip up the seat). And traced the power usage by pulling fuses and relays. Turned out to be a short in the driver side door handle outside button. It became corroded. So the car thought the button was being pushed all the time. Thus activating all the key-fob radios. 5 amp drain, 24 hours a day. Devours batteries, kills the alternator. I peeled open the button, ripped out the surface mount switch and epoxy filled it. I get no thrill using that button.

Just to show how much time is spent on crawling around the car, vs how much time is spent digging through the data on the computer, etc. I think it would make for a very interesting video on it's own. Just a time lapse view, from the upper corner of your garage, looking down on the whole case study.

So the DVD player could make the anti-lock brakes not work. Actually, (I say sheepishly) it was my companies DVD player that did the deed. But all I had to do was add a pullup resistor and it was fixed. But the paperwork was massive. My boss was a genius with obfuscation and when he explained the issue to the car company they thought it was all their fault. Well it kinda was. We crashed the entertainment bus but they put the brakes on that bus.

I connect my memory saver to the dlc then disconnect the battery terminal to make the series connection for parasitic drain test. After meter is in series, I unplug memory saver. I find it easier than trying to do the 'don't lose connection' dance

So, you concluded Ivan, that the cluster was NOT the cause of this cluster; it was the passenger door module. I have had a bit of experience with heat guns and I can tell you they aren't always accurate. You always show a bit of concern over charging for your time. It isn't like you were sitting in a chair sipping whiskey; you had that Russian brain engaged and working, removing seats trying to accurately diagnose the complicated electrical issue. You are not doing this for fun; you need to get paid for your time. It could have been worse, it could have been one of those Volkswagens that is based on a Chrysler minivan. Great video!

These cars are pretty busy when shutting down. It may take half an hour for most of the modules to go into sleep. If the car has keyless entry, this module together with “central electric Gateway” is the last to shut down. Even if there’s no parasitic draw, these rolling tech-containers needs healthy AGM batteries installed.

B.t.w. Passenger door module - that could be water in the module or green crust in the connector causing the issue and keeping the module awake. One thing that wasn't tried as far as I could see was the actual window switch being disconnected since that switch could be the actual item keeping the module awake. There may be other inputs as well - and on many vehicles the passenger door module and driver door module are identical but with different programming, so it could also be an unused input and moisture. Just my take on the issues seen here.

I've never seen water intrusion actually keep a module "awake" and talking. More likely to short out the entire network and set comm codes :)

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics if it's on a switch input pin it's possible. Some switches are actually permitted to wake up the net or keep the net alive. I did work for a vehicle manufacturer for 9 years and got some insights into the logic of what could wake up or keep a vehicle net alive.
