Most of the time, the designers don't get the eyes right, this destroys the illusion. One mistake they like to make is putting too much tear fluid in them, like we can see here. And the movement of eyes is almost never respected; eyes don't swing smoothly from left to right or stop moving to rest on a certain object, they are constantly moving around and focusing on new focus points. It's not that is wouldn't be technically possible to do this, I guess the creators are either lazy or they havn't done enough research on how the eyes' muscles work. All the rest is pretty impressive, though.

Oh, great.. Another "graphics don't matter" person.. Yeah, gameplay is what matters most, but don't forget what they are called after all.. VIDEO games. Presentation is a BIG part of it.. Big enough that 99.9 percent of gamers have stepped up from their Atari 2600's into the bold new world of better graphics... And it's not just eye candy, superior graphics do very much add to the gameplay.. My favorite genre for example, PC racing and flying sims, would have been impossible without advanced 3d polygonal graphics.. And the further advancement in texture rendering and post processing effects bring greater realism, thus greater immersion.
@Jan_Strzelecki6 жыл бұрын
*+KidAteMe1* _what. This isn't even the point of the video. Why even bring up gameplay?_ Because good gameplay and good graphics are what makes a good game. We've already had many good games _without_ photo-realistic graphics, hadn't we? *+bliglum* _Oh, great.. Another "graphics don't matter" person.. Yeah, gameplay is what matters most (...)_ Then why do you argue with me? Good gameplay and good story can make up for average graphics, but photo-realistic graphics can't make up for bad gameplay and laughable story. In your racing sims, are you really going to pay attention to all the "advanced 3d polygonal graphics" and superior textures in the middle of the race, with cars zipping around you at high speed? In the middle of the action, you tune out extraneous details and focus only on important stuff. Did you know that the newest Far Cry and GTA actually have simplified gameplay, compared to their predecessors? For example, cars in Far Cry 2 leave behind a trail of crushed grass, (as they should), but cars in Far Cry 5 don't. Concrete barriers in Far Cry 2 can be damaged, but those in Far Cry 5 are indestructible. Dead bodies realistically are thrown around by explosions in Far Cry 2, but in Far Cry 5 they simply disappear. There goes your immersion, sacrificed on an altar of advanced graphics...

If it wasn't in 60fps it would be WAY more realistic. Try switching to 480p, it's a lot better. Why? Because 60fps reveals the imperfections of the movements. And for the textures, 3D models, I think the key to achieving more realism is focusing on IMPERFECTIONS rather than perfection, because... perfection doesn't exist. If you look yourself in the mirror or take a picture you'll notice A LOT of imperfections, uneven jaw, tiny wrinkles, red-black spots, tiny little hairs, grease, etc... All those minor imperfections really count.

We just need the power to do real time ray tracing for entire scenes now. That should get us past the uncanny valley. I'd say 10 years for high end home PC's.
@TheBurleybrawler6 жыл бұрын
My prediction was based around last year's GDX1 server ($55k at the moment and already replaced by GDX2) being able to do real time ray tracing demo's today. Though the Star War's Unreal demo made on this server has no faces and low frame rate in it admittedly. I don't expect it to be in all the latest games by 2028 just real time demo's like the video above. Seeing as the the GDX1 server is better than 4 current Titan GPU's. I was thinking of a high end PC being measured as using the 2 best cards released in 2028. Say 2 x whatever the Titan is called by then. As for compute power progress I'm assuming a curve similar to the last 10 years as well. Where 2027 to 2028 should jump more than most of the first few years combined. Example cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/NVIDIA-Pascal-and-Volta-Compute-Performance.jpg I'm also assuming some of the movie industry ideas will filter down from Blender, Maya to Unreal's rendering (and more) e.g photo.qip.ru/photo/geopard/4007269/xlarge/95833997.jpg I may be fussier by 2028 but here's to hoping anyway.

It's like if you gave me a paper mache model and I pasted a real photo of a person's face on it, that part's going to look very real. The rest, not so much. :-D That's an exaggerated example but I think many miss that we're "capturing" reality at the moment in the most photorealistic CG characters. We're not "simulating" it, we're "capturing" it, and capturing has far more limitations than simulating (ex: we can't make these characters say something new without getting the actress back into the studio to capture her facial motions and voice). That's not a "CG character" in the truest sense, that's a "capture from real life".

kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJmcnqanltR9kNk My last Unreal Engine 4 faces video got over 1.2 million hits in just 2 weeks.. Insane! So I did decide to create a new video of even better realistic computer generated faces! Also a mix of other videos, like UE4 generated hands, Far Cry 5 trailers with very realistic captured faces, and for the ones who missed it, both Unreal Engine 4 Face Demos from last GDC. Enjoy! Credits go to the original authors! Dexter studios for the first intro Braulio FG for the hands and Unreal Engine 4 Face Demos kzbin.info/door/ib7wFUEQ3CyN0SV3Yc3nfA

I still think the main thing i pick up on is the transition periods between being animated and being perfectly still. Real people never stop moving. They need to work in a background loop of tiny movments to really bring them to life

The movements of the fingers, hands, facial expressions etc is too smooth, if you would compare it to your movements... they should improve on that for now instead. It’s much more important

@peperle6 жыл бұрын
This is very impressive! For me, what gives it away is that the movements are too smooth. Here, the eyes move in a uniform way, all the movement seem calculated, a little too graceful. With the two hands, when the fingers touch, they don’t REALLY seem to touch. In reality, eye movements are fast, they go from one side to another in rapid bursts. We have little twitches, our actions aren’t perfect and smooth

We're already starting to see FOIP (Face Over Internet Protocol) which will soon be integrated into games, so that your character in a multiplayer game echoes your lip movements and facial expressions in real time. Also, all this mocap generates a lot of data which could be used to facilitate a machine learning generated NPC ability.

It would convince me from being far off but it's still not real. It looks like they're made out of plastic or some sort of matte clay. I believe that real life will never be recreated; bold statement yes, but it's also bold to say that video simulations will be indistinguishable from reality.

One of my friends told me about a study which revealed data about how people feel after seeing artificial faces. They visualized the data on the x y axis and it was almost linear, but there was a huge fall just before the real face. Small, but not obvious imperfections made people feel creeped out in general. Recommend checking it out

DmC_Alexander 666 I’m reminded of the difference between Final Fantasy game and cutscene footage over the years. The amazing FFX cgi was shocking, and the game engine had many limitations and tricks to consider when trying to even look consistent. The effect can be so jarring that I greatly preferred the N64 limitation of in-engine cutscenes in a game like Starfox, to the crisp cd graphics of PS1 that gave way to muddy graphics and foggy worlds. It’s getting better all the time though, so the gap should be narrowing.

The graphics level of lighting and detail is there. But the movement/animation of eyes and mouth is soooo crucial. Humans are so good at recognising other humans speak, reading their face and their body language. I can still very clearly tell it's CG when the images are moving. If you freeze-frame some of these shots, you could fool people. Though give it some more years and it will be indistinguishable. Corridor Crew did a video on why the Star Wars faces of Lea and Tarkin were still in the uncanny valley and what would make them convincing looking/moving.

It's not just knowing beforehand that it's not real. They haven't quite nailed the physics or the movement, but there's something about all of it - even the most realistic-looking - that's just too clean, too polished. Still, it's absolutely astounding that they've gotten so close to mimicking human appearance and motion.

The holy grail of realistic looking CG people is getting the talking mouth right. That´s where I always spot it first. There are other tells, that you can get away with if you only see the character in short cuts, but that one seems to be the most difficult one to solve.

It seems we all agree the dead give-away is when the characters start talking or moving. Real human movement is imperfect, quick, and tense...as soon as we see perfectly smooth mouth movement, or an arm that hangs in the air for an extra second, we know something's off.
