Our past misperceptions and false judgements about life, about ourselves, about God, and about our relationships to life, to each other, and to God reside in the old Adam of our souls. The old Adam's image is distorted by the inordinate flesh or disproportionate appetites and inappropriate desires and fears. It is also distorted by wrong worldly ways or values or beliefs or ideologies. The old Adam of self identity in us is a distorted and inaccurate image of God, sinful and adulterated, sometimes grotesque. The pure image of God or new Adam in us comes not from the flesh or the world, but from the spiritually illuminated awareness or spirit of the soul, discipled by Christ and enlightened by the Spirit who he sends. The new Adam or true self and image of God in us is born anew from above when the old Adam in us is crucified with Christ. With the old Adam buried in the dark tomb or recesses of the heart, the new Adam is resurrected from the deepest part of the soul, the heart, once dark but then illuminated by Christ's Spirit. Inordinate appetites, inappropriate desires, disproportionate pleasures, inaccurate misperceptions, false judgements, wrong worldly values die with the old Adam. The new Adam is a clean slate or page on which the Word writes, on which the true Image of God makes his impression on the soul. God places his seal ✝️ on the newly softened heart.
