Lana Lang was given ring by an alien that gave her power to acquire powers of an insect, crab, scorpein or some other species in Superboy #124, Oct.1965. Earth 2 version of Insect Queen appeared in Superman Family # 213, 1981. (copies similar character The Fly that was produced by Archie Comic company in 1959 that also got ring from alien that gave him insect powers.)

Exactly as far as I know Lana Lang was the original Insect Queen and an honorary member of the Legion of Superheroes.

During the Golden Age of DC Comics, Lana Lang joined Legion of Superheroes as Insect Queen. She had a ring which gave her different powers of the insects, like flight with insect wings, facette eyes for better visions. Interesting how this new version made her a real insect queen.

I liked her Silverage origin better, it had a small town charm the new origin is lagging. In that story a very young Lana Lang finds a weird looking Insect/Alien-Man who have crashed down on earth, and is in mortal peril since a tree has landed on top of him (crushing him). Lana helps him, and he gives her a ring (with a small insect trapped in amber inside of it), to show her his gratitude. It turns out the ring allows her to channel insect powers (similar to Vixen, but just insects). Lana soon dawns a Queen Bee costume (in order to help her fly and sting e.g.) and becomes a member of The Legion of Superheroes. (The Ring would later be stolen by a jealous girl from Lana's school, but this other girl would use the rings powers to do evil. However she would be stopped by Superboy, and Lana would get her ring back.)

As great as this video was the actual origin of the character is from the 60's Golden Age Super Boy comics. Lana Lang gets a ring from an alien that gives her the power to turn into any insect she chooses. Her body usually changed it's shape into a humanoid version of said insect. This version of the Insect Queen got to be a reserve member of the Legion of Superheroes.
