Fearlessness, fortitude and endurance indeed! Anyone who served on this mighty ship, the "USS Intrepid," should be very proud (in WWII, she was torpedoed once and hit by four separate Japanese kamikaze aircraft and also served in Viet Nam) and we are very proud of you for your service to our Country! "The Fighting I" is impeccably clean , just as one would expect from our Navy. Rest well, "Dry" -- you served us well! I would love to visit her, I visited "Mighty MO" the "USS Missouri" in Bremerton, WA, in the 1976 and was so impressed, I'm sure I would feel just the same about the "USS Intrepid."

My Daughter and I had The Pleasure of Viewing her. It made me feel very Humble and Proud. Standing at The Gunnery I could almost feel what it must of been like when Enemy Planes were Shot Dow. I had the chance to visit the Intrepid back in 1993, still very vivid in my memory. Funny thing is, as most tourists in NY, we didn't even know she was here and it was a museum. When we stumbled on her while randomly discovering in the neighbourhood, I was so exited I jumped around my dad like a doggo. He had no choice. Sorry the bad English.

The Intrepid ship is a must see! Its huge and covers air, sea and space crafts! Its definitely interesting to see the these carriers up close! Be sure to plan your trip because it can get busy and the lines are long. I suggest you come earlier, they open at 10am so be there before that. The fact that you can tour an Aircraft Carrier is super cool! They have so many other attractions like an SR-71 blackbird, a Concorde you can tour and a full size replica of a space shuttle! Such an amazing place to experience with your children!

I havent been on the intrepid probably since I was 12 or so, 45 now, I remember it much more raw, almost how it used to look during its service time, things are very clean now, everything is behind glass, I remember touching everything.

cherifbar I was on it in the early 80's also. Then again in the early 2000's. They have made a lot of changes. Moved the aircraft around and blocked people from getting close to the aircraft and control panels in the bowels of the ship. I wanna go again.

My dad was a US Marine that was a first day lander on Tarawa 2nd Marines Red 2…..after being wounded on the third day he was in R&R in Hawaii then after his recovery he was reassigned to the USS Intrepid CV11…..he was a gunner on 25 November 1944, port side gunnery tub…..he said they got general quarters around noon, man your battle stations and were directed to shoot at the sun….the Japanese used the sun as their strategy, however two Kamikazes got thru…..my dad was seriously wounded by the Kamikazes attack hitting the Intrepid in addition to all the other bullets and bombs……..very dangerous day for both sides……God bless and protect the US Navy and the USMC….Semper Fi.

Yes, it's an A-12. People get them confused all the time. The A-12 is single seat, has a pointier less broad nose, and is shorter in length than the SR-71 which also has a spiked tail. Besides the spiked tail, the big "tells" of the SR-71 are the second crewman windows on the side and a broader nose. The chine area extends further on the SR-71. I think this serves both an aerodynamic (additional lift for the heavier SR-71) purpose as well as extra internal area/storage for the sensor packages. The main reason the SR-71 continued in service while the A-12 was retired after a year of service was that the SR-71 was the more versatile plane. The speeds of the plane were identical but the SR-71 carried more fuel for greater range. The only advantage the A-12 had was higher altitude capacity (about 5,000ft more altitude) but that's to be expected for a lighter plane with the same wing area. You could "missionize" the SR-71 for every flight with interchangeable noses and removable chine sides for different types of radar and other sensor packages you couldn't carry on the A-12. The A-12 basically carried a camera for reconnaisance and that was it. Yes, the camera on the A-12 was bigger and had higher resolution as a consequence. The bay the A-12 camera was in was adapted to carry the second crewmen for the SR-71 and other 2-seat (A-12T, D-21, YF-12A) derivatives of the A-12.

From what I could see there are not that many areas of the ship open to the public. I know that they spent alot of money on refurbishing this ship but on what? For the amount of money they charge to see this ship I would not waste it. Go see the USS New Jersey where virtually the whole ship is open to the public.

@@Skyprince27 It's NOT a replica and it's not an SR-71. This is an A-12, the original Blackbird aircraft that evolved into the SR-71. It's a single-seat, slightly higher-flying plane with less range. They flew these planes over North Vietnam for a about a year and snapped high-resolution photography. To my knowledge, the only sensor the A-12s ever carried was a camera with a very big lens and high-resolution film (film that was at least a foot wide!) that could resolve images down to maybe a foot or less resolution (probably 7-8 inch resolution minimum) from an altitude of 80,000ft-90,000ft. This was before spy satellites could do that from much higher altitudes. Part of why the A-12 was replaced by the SR-71 after only a year of service was because the A-12 was CIA and, if they lost one, it'd be harder to make excuses for that (see Gary Powers/U-2 Incident), and the SR-71 was the more flexible plane with the same top speed but greater range. The A-12 could fly a bit higher but that's the only real advantage it had. You could fit more sensors on the SR-71 and vary those sensor packages according to mission. Also, because you had 2 men on the SR-71 the pilot could do his job of flying the plane instead of having to do everything. The reconnaisance officer on the surface has more tasks (navigation, fuel/range calculations, AND operating the reconnaisance gear) but the Blackbird was a complicated machine. It's better to split the workload between 2 people with an air-breathing vehicle as complicated and dangerous as any space vehicle built to date. They literally were wearing spacesuits with any jet that sustained altitudes greater than 65,000ft like the U-2 and Blackbirds did!
