To be fair, VW Group did offer an amazing 4L V8 TDI twin turbo on several models in Europe until a few years ago. And in the past, they sold a V10 TDI and the 6L V12 TDI twin turbo. In recent decades, even in North America, engines have been getting smaller on average. In the past, big V8 engines were an American classic, but now they are rare. Some of the only new cars with a V8 are, for example, the Corvette, and high performance versions of the Mustang. But those are sadly only gasoline, not diesel engines. Certain pickup trucks and very large SUVs are the only place you'll find big displacement diesel engines in the 6L range. But even GM is only selling a 3L diesel these days on new large models.

One thing that B57 make happy is it share simillar block construction to B58. So BMW make both diesel and gasoline engine on simillar cylinder block. And diesel usually run with higher boost from the factory. Thats make B58 very strong because the block has same standard as B57 does.

That explains why they went back to the closed deck design for these engines. They need to handle the high compression ratio and torque output of the diesel versions, so are perhaps over-engineered for the petrol versions.

The M550d B57S with the 4 turbo's is actually a very robust and stable engine. We have several clients in our shop that have them, no engine issues at all, not even a higher kilometers (200000+). The previous N57S engine did have some issues, specially when tuned. Tuners did not understand the 3-turbo engine then and overdone it. The M550d B57S can safely be tuned to 480HP and 900NM (even 1000NM, that is the ZF torque limit). Alpine still uses this engine in the D5S, it's a real gem.

6:28 the 10 injections per engine cycle thing is a staple of modern common rail direct injection diesels, basically fuel is injected gradually instead of all at once, which improves power, torque, performance when cold and emissions. It was actually pioneered by FIAT who patented the JTD system (jet turbodiesel) which later evolved into JTDm/Multijet and later still into Multijet 2 and 3, which is used on FIAT group (FIAT, Lancia, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Jeep and so on) diesels up to this day. Not meant for tuning. This engine meant to achieve the v8-v10 powerbands from the '90s and '00s with smaller displacement. The only reason this engine is complicated on this level because it was trying to survive the Euro 6d and in the meantime it became a ticking time bomb. At 10+ years old and over 200k miles these will be the most unreliable, most expensive things to own ever.

@jonathanjones8044 Жыл бұрын
@@shadowsiren3058. Couple of more things, examine the harmonic/dampener balancer very closely. If it is bad, it will take out the main bearings pretty quickly. Look for cracks in the rubber portion. If your AC quits and the charging system light comes on, it is about to leave the “chat” if it hadn’t already done so. And lastly, change the oil/filter every 5K miles. The 09s and 10s appear to have less problems than the 11s do. I think BMW sold about 10K of the 2011s versus maybe 2,000 for 2009 and 2010s combined. Since there are about 5Xs of the 2011s may explain the higher bearing failures. Some speculate that BMW may have received some faulty main bearings. Fun cars to drive though. My G31 M550d WITH EGR and catalytic downpipe BUT with an individual ECU program has 473hp and 850Nm. I hope I’m going over the 500hp barrier if I remove those “bad” components… 🫣

Imagine this engine swapped in BMW 3er and AWD. That would be a killer.

Why 4 turbos instead of a supercharger?
@F14foreverF147 ай бұрын
Germans truly are the kings of Diesel, Rudolf Diesel himself would be proud of this beast. Delete EGR and this baby would ACE that pesky Euro6 limit and do 50mpg

How would the reliability be? It would be a disaster to fix or maintain considering there's 4 turbos. It would be smarter to have what Audi has set up or better yet have 2 electric turbos instead of 4 in a sequential set up for more reliability and lesser complexity for maintainence. That way you have that instant torque without the need of more moving components which will increase the chances of a break down. They could've also done a single turbo and single auxiliary compressor like how Volvo does it or better yet just have the same twin turbo I6 in the 50i series and attach a electric compressor. No more turbo lag but good performance.

tuners like g power or abt always keep their power outputs low for reliability. So normal Tuners push these engines to over 500hp with 1000nm of torque.

I think you got something wrong with the emissions regulation. It's not correct that they sacrified due to the fact that the engine is emitting more than 95g of CO2 per km. In fact most (larger) engines don't. And it is allowed to produce such engines anyway. In fact what counts in Europe are the over all emissions of the brands fleet. If your company fails to meet the emission goals then your company has to pay penalties. So many companies sacrified their larger engines - especially those which sold worst. And those two facts came together for the x50d or the 760i. Both emitted a lot of CO2 AND weren't sold very often. Combined with even stricter upcoming emission standards (Euro 7) that marked the end for this fascinating engine. Funfact: when I bought my G31 (btw you forgot this model in the lineup ;)) I was struggeling with myself which 6-cylinder diesel to choose. In the end I decided to go for the 530d as the 50d is faster in acceleration and that is about it. This only pro argument for me stood against higher maintanance cost, more parts that could fail, higher buying price and so on.

I’ll bet with an emissions delete and upgraded turbos this thing would easily see 1000hp

World record for a 3 liter BMW diesel is held by a Romanian in the low 8s. He uses the iron block M57, the N57 that has the bagillion turbos is made out of glass and will fail even at stock power levels.😊

OMG they used Piezoelectric injectors again, like in my N54 335i.Have they not learned their lesson from the late mid 2000s. Interesting engine though im sure the torque is absolutely effortless.

The best thing that engine can do is brake down and bankrupt the owner. Good luck to the bastard who gets the task to get those 4 turbos in sinc correctly! Also, a 1.6 4 cylinder is a small engine, not a 3.0 I6..

Is it more reliable than the m57?
@TruePurpleHaze Жыл бұрын
@@R3YNZ it has issues with broken oilpumps that lead to spun bearings and also suffers from (somewhat rare) timing chain failure. The N57 in the E9x 325d and 330d is the most reliable variant.

With a deisel putting out that kind of torque and horse power I would be concerned about the aluminum block and the main bearings. Should have used iron block
