Inside John Derian’s Enchanting Seaside Home in Cape Cod | Design Notes

John Derian welcomes us into his magical ‘old world’ house in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It was a rainy day in Provincetown, Massachusetts, when the designer John Derian first saw what would eventually become his house, an 18th-century Greek Revival number in the centre of town.
Built in 1789 for a sea captain who could keep on eye on happenings at sea from the front windows, the house was then extended backwards in the 19th century, which has now been transformed into a small shop for John's dreamy homewares. As a result of this evolutionary process, there are plenty of attractive quirks to the architecture and decoration, from the faded 20th-century wallpapers to the seashell and horsehair plasterwork. I absolutely love that he didn’t do any major renovations!! So many beautiful historic homes in this country are being renovated, and they often lose the things that make them unique in the process. I have so much respect for anyone that recognizes the beauty in old homes and chooses to preserve them even if that means foregoing some modern conveniences.

The most charming house I have ever seen!! this is what real talent gets you!! A dreamy home even without costly renovations! If I lived even remotely nearby I would be John's customer to his shop and I would beg him to have a small glimpse of his home.

From a practical side, my one concern is flaking paint that might have lead. If there are no small children or pets, it's probably fine. It is definitely a beachy vintage look, and I prefer that to lots of bright colors and 'big' patterns that might work in a modern space. I grew up in a Mid-Century home, but haven't lived in a house with a dishwasher or even a garbage disposal since I 'left home'. Even houses from the 1920s/1930s were solidly made, and have fun features like built-ins, milk doors, and mirrored medicine cabinets above the kitchen sink. His house feels welcoming and cozy, with his collections and fun antique art. I'm always a fan of 19th Century style botanical and scenic images. Nice video for the late summer.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOh! This past Saturday in Provincetown, I saw the shop sign and was I drawn to it but also so confused, but I kept looking at the sign for some reason, trying to understand, perhaps was it an interior design business or a shop. And now I see the same shop sign this video! Such a missed treasure! Will visit next time!

I've always loved walking past this house and admiring it. I was a bit stunned at the look of the interior. The owner has amazing aesthetic taste. But, as noted by another commenter, I would not feel comfortable living with the state of decomposition that the house exudes.

Very charming. Delightful. It would be nice to spend a weekend there! (I would not enjoy being the owner, simply because of the dusting and lack of a/c. It used to be true that the Cape and Islands didn't need it, but for the past several years it has no longer been true!! Some of our neighbors have recently installed A/C, where just not that long ago it was an absurd idea.)

I admire the fact he can live with the decor as is. Companies will reproduce the wallpaper... maybe he should do this while parts if the wallpaper still remain... these companies archive the patterns too. If it was me I would have to polish that place to within an inch of its life 😂😂😂 but I could never have a place like this😢😢😢) Enjoy your dreamy life... I love the delightful shop at the back.
