Had an office on 33rd and 10th until 2019. We were relocated because it was being converted into a residential building. This was one of the biggest corruption based development projects in NYC history. First off Brookfield (the owners) were giving over 1.5 Billon dollars in grants, subsidies and 0% interest loans. On top of 15 years of tax free status. This was an issue because they are none US based company (Canadian). During the construction Brookfield only used 15-20% unionized employees, the remainder were low wage small contractors. The rent for all of the business within a 5-10 block radius and has more than doubled. A restaurant a few blocks away had their rent raised from 15K 2019 a month to 40K in 2022. The capacity rate in the residential and commercial building is 18%-30% allowing Brookfield to write off losses on this and other unrelated projects. To sum it up, NYC gave Brookfield over a billion dollars in subsidies without contingencies. The developers used none union employees to save coast and drive down wages. The rents in the area sky rocketed at a time when sales are down. Our tax dollars (governments don’t make money they use tax dollars) went to subsidize a project of a large a developer, that didn’t employe locals and drove up the coast. Shame on the mayor and the government during that time.

@prestonradtke2222 жыл бұрын
The only thing that Hudson yards has over other neighborhoods in the city, If you are a resident, is that since everything is so new, apartments and condos, don’t come with the inherent frustrations of older buildings. They obviously don’t have the vintage charm, but the appliances and creature comforts are much higher than prewar buildings which populate the city.

@@georgiasmith7615 that’s true, they were mainly thinking of people working in Manhattan. commuting from Williamsburg every day could be kind of a drag compared to Hudson yards. also, downtown Brooklyn is OK, it’s just a bit too chainy for me.

Once again Jon delivers with another excellent video. So pleased he did a guide to Hudson Yards and covered all the main areas. Very useful. Not been to NYC since 2018 so this will be a must see new area for us when we finally return in April. Looking forward to seeing it as it was just being finished when we last visited. Not cheap as Jon says but we have to see it. Equinox is a quality brand but boy it’s not cheap. The Edge looks amazing and the Shopping Centre looks quality. Love how they have decked it out for Christmas. Not sure about that Paella being worth $18? Nice cameo by Ben again. Very sharp with the one liners. Shame about the Vessel situation. Surely they have to open it up again. Very sad what has happened but surely it’s worth a go again. That Casino idea will be interstice to see if it gets the go ahead. This will be done in style no doubt. Nice work Jon. Thanks.

The shopping at Hudson Yards is a bit boring. It’s mostly chain stores that you have in most major American cities. Why do you need to travel to NYC to see that? What I love about NYC is the unique small boutiques not in other cities. The Shed is great thought. They have amazing avant garde performances. I saw Bjork there in 2019.

I get that it’s expensive, and people hate on it. But the developers created a VERY NICE new part of Manhattan with architecture, sculpture, trees, walkways, restaurants, and shops. What would you prefer?? Graffiti, garbage, homeless, and crime??! (I think New York already has ENOUGH). Yes, it would be nice if there were a few more non-chain shops, and restaurants to give it more character, but Hudson Yards is a great addition to the city!

The problem with the Vessel was the barriers were at 4 ft high, making it very easy for anyone who had horrible intentions. Sadly 4 people, one being 14 years old, did. Even before the death of the final person, there were pleas to bring the barriers higher or put preventive measures added the barrier, but the architect and officials of the Hudson Yard felt it took away from the look. Now no one can go up there.

If the developers of HY wanted to go for something boldly futuristic and creating a new model for urban communities, they failed miserably. Mistake one was isolating HY rather than continuing the street grid into the neighborhood, which effectively makes it another one of those "towers in a park" dystopias. And, from what I can tell, it's basically just glassy highrises set above a shopping mall and pedestrian square. Oh, and they threw in a couple of "cultural" things into it just to make it seem like a vibrant place, when it's just an even less inviting iteration of Battery Park City.

I thought New York law prohibits gambling of any kind in the city. Most gambling in the city has to be done through third parties under the table at least from what I know. Steve Wynn will likely never get past that law. The entertainment complex though is a good idea as it would give New York something other than Coney Island to do. The city really needs like a indoor space where you an do rides and stuff and not worry too much for the season nor weather.
