What I really like about this movie is like what Doug says, "You're gonna get your bad moments in life, and some sacrifices have to be made". However, it also shows you that it's okay to let your natural emotions go sometimes. It's okay to be sad, but it also shows you that when times do look dark good things can come out of it. And it shows that sadness is what eventually led to Riley feeling a sense of happiness, because of other people's kind actions.

anyone think Inside Out feel like a Miyazaki movie? the profoundness of it, and the silent moments are extremely Miyazaki-influenced. Pixar needs to make more of this, coz Ghibli doesnt get enough credit, so Pixar needs to bring it back to the mainstream.
@RheaStorm9 жыл бұрын
Tim Tran Ghibli doesn't get enough credit? Don't get me wrong, Studio Ghibli movies are for the most part, good. (Even the non-Miazakyi ones...sorry if I butchered his name) But they are one of the few animation studios not based in America in where their movies get a lot of praise and showing here. They get plenty of credit for their works.

Dylan Paterson I actually think it was optimized younger than most Pixar works. Not as low as Cars, but lower than the others.
@Keaze9 жыл бұрын
Scott Finkelstein It was literally chock full of symbolism for psychology and mental processes that kids would not understand. It's only childish if you watch it with your brain turned off.
@scottfinkelstein98659 жыл бұрын
Kaze I'm going to have to disagree about children not understanding. Looking at both the final product and writer interviews, the "symbolism" (it seems a little different from what I think of for that term, but I can't quite put my finger on how) was made to be accessible to children, and is largely about things of greatest relevance to a younger audience (although not nearly as tightly focused as MLP, which I can respect for quality but find unwatchable due to being in such a removed stage of life). The pacing also seemed to most closely match the aesthetic sensibilities of a younger audience than many other Pixar works.
@Keaze9 жыл бұрын
Scott Finkelstein I genuinely think you just didn't want to bother appreciating this beyond the superficial level, probably because of the colourful visuals. The movie has a lot to offer if you don't just write it off based on superficial ideas and it most definitively doesn't deal only with stuff relatable to children. I'm kind of baffled at even the idea of this. Thinking that the theme of emotions is only relevant to children is extremely childish.
@scottfinkelstein98659 жыл бұрын
Kaze And I think you're in denial to the fact that you enjoyed a work meant for children because you've conflated quality with age of the intended audience. There is not one piece of symbolism in this film that is inaccessible to a child. There is zero need for prior knowledge by design. The makers of the movie felt no need to tell their story using obscure Christian iconography. It is almost Jungian in its directness. As for the themes, both the director and the psychologists consulting on the film have gone on record saying that the film is for children first acquiring self-awareness and experiencing more than the most fleeting of sorrows for the first time. They are the ones first tasting sadness and grappling with what it is and whether it is okay. For most adults, sorrow is an old friend that we know well. It's nice to be reminded of the lesson in Inside Out and have it affirmed, possibly for the first time, but it's not something we are only now learning or debating within ourselves.

Honestly, I like the fact that Disney movies aren't all sunshine, that the characters have to deal with hardship and even permanent loss. I was at the edge of my seat, knowing things will turn out for the better but still tensing up at all the destruction around them. This is the kind of movie that kids and adults can both get something out of, the notion that we have to make everything stupid and absolutely sparkling in a kid's movie is heavily insulting to kids. They need to be able to face hardships like this so they can know how to deal with them and not let it break them.
@EveryThingGirl2385 жыл бұрын
People who want to think the world is all sunshine and rainbows. Who want their kids to grow up not knowing what it's like to lose, what it's like to feel lost, or not have something. It's growth and healthy to know not all things are going to go your way, and not all things are going to be happy You'll have down times, and the point of this movie is to show that we all go through it, and it's okay. You're right, totally missed the point. Ug I hate people at times.

Mathew Godfrey Actually, AUTO was only responding based on his programming. His programming was, by the way, to almost resolutely protect the Axiom which included not bringing them back to Earth on the basis that Earth would still be uninhabitable. Even if AUTO was a kind of Pixar take on HAL-9000, he/it was not evil. Being programmed to do a certain thing is not the same as being evil. And it's debatable whether or not Charles Muntz is evil too.
@mathewgodfrey15179 жыл бұрын
That's why I used the term "antagonist" rather than "villain", because they are both rather different things. An antagonist isn't always necessarily a villain in the story. Take Harry Potter for example. Voldemort is villain. Snape is an antagonist. (spoiler) Now it is rather debatable that the "I don't know what they're called" that send Bing Bong to the Subconscious can be antagonists, but I think they were more comic relief characters.

I just hope the next 85 years of cinema, millennial filmmakers can push for more innovative content like this film and NOT rely on rehashing or referencing franchises/ culture from the 80's and 90's soo much. Seriously, after Spielberg releases READY PLAYER ONE, that should be the film to close the vault on this current wave of 80's/ 90's reboots and remakes. Look at where we were in 1915 vs 2015. We need more imagination people. As Doug's brother said, this film "restores your faith in cinema".

The Electrocist Except this concept of controlling ones thoughts has been done to death already. Nothing original
@MK-oz2lf9 жыл бұрын
slug237711 Well, if you watched this video, Doug's brother addressed this "topic" and I agree with him in that; it's not about the "Originality" about the concept, but the originality in its execution. That's what made this film so compelling and clever compared to other stories with similar expositions. Ex: Herman's Head. Do you know how many times (good & bad) there have been the "boy meets girl/ boy looses girl/ boy wins girl" story arcs made throughout history? Millions. Yet when it is done well, it doesn't feel old. So.... what's more important: Great storytelling or uniqueness for the sake of uniqueness and possibly botch your film in the process?
@guyincognito75099 жыл бұрын
The Electrocist Hey, reboots and remakes can be GOOD, we shouldn't just STOP with all of them. I can't stand it when people go, "oh do something ORIGINAL for once!"Remakes and reboots can be original! Mad Max Fury Road was a continuation of an 80s franchise, it was awesome! The Chris Nolan Batman Trilogy was a reboot!I just think people should stop acting like it's the end of the world every time a reboot/remake gets announced.
@MK-oz2lf9 жыл бұрын
Guy Incognito Hey Guy. Yes, I can realistically say that reboots and remakes will never cease to exist, however, in my comment as you can see, I was emphasizing the overkill that the film industry has been focusing too much on with ORIGINAL films from the 80's and 90's and rehashing them again today. There's too much creative input in these types of films versus the films that pursue new ideas. Usually they're "indie" stuff. There's an imbalance basically and I was figuratively saying (with the vault visual) that it can be good for the film industry to take a break and focus on a new direction. You mentioned Mad Max Fury Road. Great film. People argue it can stand on its own without the other 3 films and I agree. It is a great movie because it brought back the huge, practical, extravaganza film-making that old school blockbusters use to do in an age of CGI gluttony. It was refreshing. Now imagine if filmmakers, with that same enthusiasm creating new worlds and stories and making people just as excited as you were with MMFR. There's a lot of "cook-cutter" productions these days. Because the focus has been too much on nostalgia, and I get it, but... it's a "double edge sword" if you see what I mean? Thanks for responding.

Brave was a let down. I liked the premise of the story, with the strong, independent bow wielding redhead who don't need no man but then it suddenly turned into brother bear and I just sat there like 'what just happened?'. I liked the aesthetics, especially the forest and the wisps it was so interesting but then they screwed that all up when they introduced the plot. It had an interesting protagonist that they could've done so much more with a great setting and then they didn't deliver with the actual story, which in the end is the most important part. Inside Out was the reverse Brave for me.

I have to bring up one running joke that you glossed over: The Tripledent gum commercial. It just made me (and the rest of the audience) laugh my ass off whenever they used it. We've all had that one thing that gets stuck in our head and refuses to leave (might I just say... Statefarm?), and they bring that full-force. They use it every chance they get, ESPECIALLY the bus driver scene in the credits, where all of the emotions were anger. So many laughs...

The folks at Pixar have a talent for taking seemingly unoriginal ideas and making them seem fresh and new! I think Doug even said it himself during Disneycember, Toy Story, with it's premise of toys coming to life when no one is around, is clearly nothing new and has been seen a million times, but you never hear people harping on Toy Story for being unoriginal! Mainly because it's just that good a movie! So it seems like the same can be said for Inside Out, and I for one can't wait to see it!
@iHeartsNostalgiaPit9 жыл бұрын
Bowmaj 86 yeah you're right Toy Story wasn't really original, there was already a film like that that was made in the 70's Raggedy Ann and Andy a Musical Adventure (how has Doug not reviewed it yet, and yet the Greedy scene was on the mindfuck list) though there was no toy rivalry in the film though.
@bowmaj86669 жыл бұрын
iheartryanstyles I always remember "The Forgotten Toys" a Christmas Special about a Doll and a Teddy Bear who get thrown away when their owners get new toys for Christmas and have to go on a search for new ones. Now that I think about it, it has a spookily similar premise, with a toy's fear of not being loved by their child any more. I think it even came out the same year!

I'm amused by people like YMS who say that this concept has been done a million times and therefore is not original. Pretty much, there is no such thing as a truly original concept, although I do find that it's possible to be truly original with your presentation, which is what "Inside Out" achieves. What I love about this film is how well-researched it is and how wonderfully it imagines a physical analogue of the processes of the subconcious. It covers the concepts of core memories, the relationships between emotions, how emotions change over time, how we learn to balance our emotions with age, and so forth. For children at Riley's age, these things are indispensable lessons thought will make growing up SO much easier, and I really wish this film has come out when *I* was eleven. They're right, too. This movie is cathartic.

By the way, regarding when Brave won the academy award for best animated film, last year, how to train your dragon 2 should have won, not big hero 6. I like big hero 6, but httyd2 was far the Superior film. Kind of a tangent. But oh well.

Somehow watching Inside Out with my mom made this movie even more fun. Not only did we laugh and cry at all the right moments, but also the "express your sadness" idea hit home for the both of us. My mom works as a counselor so I was practically raised on the "it's okay to cry" philosophy. Sure crying makes us look vulnerable and nobody like to make themselves vulnerable. But you know what? Crying is all part of the healing process. Otherwise, you just go numb and unfeeling if you keep it all bottled up, which the movie expressed amazingly as well.

There was also Cranium Command at EPCOT, which also explores the idea of characters working in your head. Pete Docter worked on the pre-show animation for that, though it was directed by the same two guys who would go on to direct Beauty & the Beast. His head made a cameo in that animation. Knowing he was working on Inside Out, along with the fact that pretty much all the best people there outside of Lasseter weren't really heavily involved in the last 3 movies, I had high hopes for this picture. I'm glad to say this did not disappoint. I'm really looking forward to any stories in the future w/ these emotional characters, whether through shorts or another movie. Speaking of another movie, this could take the same aging route that Toy Story took. That scene w/ Fear filling in for the Dream Shfit. I want an MST3K setup there where a group sits behind the control panel while commenting on the low-quality dreams they're subjected to.

I find it funny when people try to argue that this movie doesn't portray emotions accurately and yet there are psychologists that not only helped with the movie but praise it. I remember going to a counseling center and Inside Out was everywhere and all the counselors talked about how well it portrayed emotions. Maybe it was because they couldn't connect to Riley's situation.

I work at a movie theater. And before I saw the movie, a couple came up to me and stated a disliking of the film. Curious because I was eager to see the film later on, I asked them why they didn't like it. Both agreed that the movie pushed in to much sadness, that they feared it was teaching kids that sadness was a good thing. Since I was working I only nodded said sorry they didn't like the film and told them to enjoy their day. But after they left I thought about sadness, how after a good cry you feel better, how sadness mixed with other emotions, is an amazing feeling. And no matter what that couple said, I was still going to see that film. Finally the days comes that me and a friend of mine go see the film. And all of my thoughts on sadness were perfectly showed on that screen. Sadness isn't just the dark we all see. It's more like the map to help us find our way and move forward. I adored this movie, and am looking forward to more movies as strong like this in the future.
@EveryThingGirl2385 жыл бұрын
That's the thing, Sadness IS a good thing. Bottling up your emotions isn't a good thing at all, Kids need to know it's okay to cry, it's okay to be sad. I had a good cry after a horrible day at work, mostly just letting some tears fall because the frustration hit over the edge for me. Honestly I felt better because of it, and was able to take a breath. It's parents like that that kind of make me roll my eyes in annoyance. Because they are the kind that possibly will push their kids to the extreme and these kids will have problems later in life. I've seen kids who's parents tell them to push back there emotions of anger, fear, and sadness. All for the sake of just being happy, but if my experience at work taught me anything, even mature adults get angry and they need to cry it out. We may not do it as much as kids, but sometimes a good cry is what we need.

My main concern about the trailer was “All right, where are they taking this concept?” The trailers didn’t care to show that, and I almost want to say it was for the better due to just how great the parts they didn’t show were. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the direction they took this, and it’s a very close contender with _Wreck-It Ralph_ for my favorite movie of all-time. And it figures: they’re both figurative representations of what happens behind the curtains, and both feature characters that realize their roles aren’t without meaning. The latter tops out for me because it’s a video-game movie, of course, but I cannot deny _Inside Out_ being the overall superior film that anyone can get into.

As someone who is usually happy-go-lucky all of the time, not only did I think the movie is a symbolism of depression, but since I'm usually happy all of the time, I've found that usually being happy ALL the time is never good. Eventually your going to get sad or if you didn't the people around you will automatically think "Oh their so happy! their life must be perfect and they don't need any help, they don't need assistance for anything" and they won't be there for you because they think your so great. I absolutely loved the movie and how it actually showed that sadness IS important and that everyone has it, throughout the movie the parents talked about how perfect Riley was and how happy she constantly was until they realized that she can get sad too. I really think Pixar put a lot of emotion (no pun intended ;D ) into this! good job, Pixar!

I think that the clown was purposefully made not-scary to sort of tap into childish fears, the fact that you fear over something that isn't scary at all. The clown doesn't have a scary design, but the lighting and the environment and the music all play into making you a part of that fear. When I watched this, the clown didn't scare me at all, but because of the environment I still felt that same fear that a child would fear towards an un-intimidating clown. But that's just me :)
