Let's tour Spanish Harlem aka "El Barrio" in the East Harlem Neighborhood of Manhattan, NYC. The area was once home to the largest Puerto Rican population outside of the island, but is now home to many other cultures. We'll explore with Ariel from ‪@UrbanistExploringCities‬ a Puerto Rican born New Yorker, (a.k.a a Nuyorican) who will show us places to eat, and things to do in Spanish Harlem! Smash that like button so KZbin knows you enjoyed this.

That’s New York in a nutshell. East Harlem was first Italian then Puerto Rican now Dominican, Mexican and a bit African and Chinese. This over the past 70 years. The transformation is constantly in motion. I love how NY enables recent immigrants to start their American dream. 25 years later, their kids are college educated with great jobs.

It doesn't matter if it's a strictly Puerto Rican neighborhood or a mix of different ethnicities of different Hispanics and other groups. The neighborhood should still keep the name Spanish Harlem because that's basically it's spiritual legacy.

This is one of my favorites videos. I went to the Spanish Harlem earlier this year and it's different from 90s. However, you still have a big Latino community. There is so much Latin history here and if you love salsa you must visit La casa Latina and take pictures of all the murals that remaind there. Viva el Barrio🔥🔥 Thumbs up👍👍👍👍

I’ve always wanted to visit Spanish Harlem. I used to go all around Lower Manhattan (especially Chinatown) & all the way up to the Upper Westside but never got around to go all the way up. I grew up not too far away from Humboldt Park here in Chicago, which is the PR enclave here. Not nearly as vibrant anymore (a lot of gentrification is happening), but it’s still there.

Thanks for this very nice video...Yes, the Latino Music Shop is legendary and so are the murals and food establishments.. Many aren't aware that at the turn of the 20th Century, in East Harlem, many Jewish families shared the neighborhood with Italians ( Fiorello LaGuardia , former NYC mayor) was their District Leader and Congressman). A few of my favorite spots to visit are Rao's Restaurant - 455 East 114th St ( almost impossible to gain entry though), Patsy's Pizza ( the original Patsy's)- 2287 1st Ave, Keith Harings " Crack is Wack" Mural at 128th St and Harlem River Drive and finally the Harlem Courthouse at 170 East 121st St ..a very beautiful Romanesque Revival structure. Keep up your labor of love and MERRY CHRISTMAS to Here be Barr and family and Ariel and family and ALL SUBSCRIBERS.

I’ve been going to the Graffiti Hall of Fame since the 90’s. They renovated that place. It used to be pretty beat down and you could sneak in through a hole in the fence. Shoutout to James Top for still doing annual events there. Street Art wise, the last time Banksy was in NYC, he did a piece in Spanish Harlem. I visited the mural before the graff writers tagged over it. It was the “If You Loot, We Shoot” piece showing a Wall Street trader stealing a bunch of cash.

Hi guys, lovely collab!! I love seeing u together. Just a note about the word "capicú" that Ariel referred: it comes from catalonian and the meaning is "cap i cúa", that is : head and tail. It is referred to figures that start and finish with the same number, and can be read the same right to left and left to right. Example: 1221 In dominó, you shout "capicúa" when both ends have the same number. 👍👍

Yes, the neighborhood has changed from 29 years ago (when I moved there). You had la Marqureta, the summer concerts on 115th and Park Ave, the parade/fair etc. It was a family oriented area. Ppl knew if u were from the area or not and looked after you. After 9/11, ppl started moving uptown to Spanish harlem, harlem, the heights and inwood. This really changed the dynamics of the neighborhood and made the area unaffordable. However, it's still a melting pot of cultures.

You're gonna think I'm nuts, but I recognize your quick b-roll clip as a plate from Cafe Manolin. Best place in Old San Juan for lunch! I gotta check out that playlist!
