Meh, it was a prototype. If the Army still wanted infantry tanks it would have gotten a Meteor like everything else the Brits fielded from '46 on. It would have made about 20-22mph, just a couple of mph less than Centurion. The issue wasn't the big Vauxhall, it was the shiny new Leyland. Centurion had pretty much every tank in the World beat in terms of it's balance of mobility, firepower, protection, crew ergonomics- heck, it was even pretty reliable, which must have been a bit of a novelty for the war generation of Brit tankers. It made late war heavy and medium tanks obsolete overnight. The Brits didn't go back to heavy tanks until they needed to fit a 120mm gun a decade later. Even that was a temporary measure while they sorted out the L7 for Centurion...

@@billyclement5141 But that is true, the only real future Black Prince would have had is if the bigger turret ring was part of technical requirements of ORIGINAL Churchill. Back then it had less armor thickness and thus it would have had less mass and bigger turret would have allowed to avoid 2 pounder and hull cannons. And maybe this way they would have chosen sloped front over frontal MG when they would have gotten to increasing the armor thickness. This way Meteor and 17 pounder would have just gotten onto it naturally in 1944 and britain would have had a tank that can duke it out with Tigers and Panthers in Normandy when it was needed.

Another great broadcast - I always enjoy these inside the hatch episodes. I was watching an old movie "Theirs is he Glory" filmed in 1945 last night and it makes me think that the Chieftain doesn't properly appreciate how small men were in Britain by 1945. They were much smaller framed as a whole due to two world wars worth of rationing with a period of depression poverty in between for good measure. Today we are all over-fed and battle with obesity and have done for at least three decades to the same extent Brtis fought hunger and malnourishment. I think they had more room inside the turret that you'd think.

The Chieftan refers almost exclusively in regards to height. In many tanks, a person of below-average height even in the 1930s and 1940s would find the headroom less than optimum. I don't think he has ever addressed the girth of a tank crewman other than the size of some tank door in some French and British tanks. As to the question of rank doors (hatches) he has spoken about the myth of the 'small hatch Shermans' and how the hatch size was more than sufficient for him.

Much of it is down to infant/child nutrition being hugely better now (or worse, depending on your view point). Also, Army fitness (and general fitness in athletic circles) was focused on stamina and endurance rather than absolute strength. My Grandfather was a pre-war regular in Coldstream Gds, eventually retiring in the 50s. He was tall at 6', but was not a broad man by modern standards. Interestingly, he commanded Churchills during 44-45 with Guards Armoured, and considered the Churchill a nice roomy tank.
@charlesadams17214 жыл бұрын
@@duncanhamilton5841: Perhaps. I grew up in the 1960s and 1970s and knew quite a few men who were in various Armies during WWII (including my father and three uncles), a bunch of Germans and Austrians who emigrated to the US after the war as well as more than a few Brits who came to the US as well (I grew up in the Washington, DC area) and many of these men were at least 5'8" in height. They were not mostly heavily muscled me, but they weren't small men by any measure. Now, if you say that malnutrition was not a problem for people from America, but you couldn't tell the difference between the Americans and Europeans until they spoke. As to the Black Prince, I think people are taking umbrage over Nick's comments about the size of the turret, well, if you look at the room in the hull. where Nick has an insane amount of room when he is is the drivers and co-drivers seats. Please note how he has to reach way over to his left to open the emergency hatch. I think he was surprised by the relatively tight quarters of the tank commander and gunner.

@@duncanhamilton5841 I had an uncle who was a Matilda II gunner in the desert campaign then transferred to Churchills. He once said he thought that compared to Matilda the later Churchill marks were positively luxurious. He died in the late 1970s and with hindsight there’s lots of questions I should have asked him but never did. It would have been interesting to know what he or other tankers of his generation made of modern MBTs’ ergonomics had he been able to see the Chieftain’s videos. As for the Guards, they always only recruited tall men - one of my wife’s grandfathers was in the Household Cavalry from 1917 to 1938. We’ve a photo of him in everyday dress (overalls, not the fancy stuff worn when on ceremonial duties) standing next to his horse. He was over 6 ‘ tall but not heavily built. He missed the First World War because by the time he was considered sufficiently trained it was already over. He tried to re-enlist in 1940 but was rejected on age grounds and because after leaving the army he’d immediately got a job on a farm (experience with big horses being very useful until tractors became ubiquitous post-war) and agricultural work was a reserved occupation.

It varies a lot. My grandfather (fathers side) and step-grandfather(mothers side) grew up during WW1 and they where both tall man (over 180cm, one a Westfalian, one a Pommerian). As are my father and his brothers (born 1934-1938) with my father at 182cm being the smallest and youngest. Although I have encountered an account where the unit's chaplain took it on himself to remove bodies from knocked out tanks(this was a duty the men were meant to fulfill, but the chaplain wanted to spare the men of the unpleasantness of this duty, and it was something he could do to help the men on top of his spiritual duties.) Now if you have ever asked yourself how exactly you would get a dead body our of a tank, well its basically impossible if the body is not dismembered and he used a tank machete for this purpose.

I don't know if question from comments are accepted for Q&A or it is mostly done with Patreon, but here is one: There are a lot of discussions about alternate paths tank developement in various countries might have taken, most prominent being USA, USSR and Germany of course:( However, in line with those discussions as well as existence of Black Prince and suprisingly long career of Valentine, *was there an alternative route for Matilda to take?* Yes, Churchill was supposed to replace other infantry tanks, but we know that Valentine stayed and was upgraded up to being somewhat an analogue to early T-34-76 and T-34-57 in terms of armament and protection if not in mobility. Was it possible to expand the lifespan of Matilda by squeezing enough from it to make it a full equivalent of KV-1 tanks? And use that expansion of its line of duty to instead demand bigger turret ring on Churchill from the beginning? I know that there were attempts to put different turret on Matilda and put 6 pounder in it, there was russian attempt to upgun modified turret to 76mm gun and there were versions with 75mm very low velocity howitzers/launchers. So what stopped Matilda's modernization? Was there no mass reserve in suspension left? Would the turret of first Churchill allow enough space if put on Matilda? And what guns would Churchill 1 have if it would be created with bigger turret ring to begin with? Was it possible to use the naval AA guns that were used to make Gun Carriers, but in a turret? Or even put a renowned 25 pounder into it?
@tisFrancesfault4 жыл бұрын
The Matilda basically was deployed at its peak state. It lacked any real upgradablity. A major issue is it lacked size. There was a prototype with a 6pdr Cromwell turret, however it wasn't really worth the hassle. And the Russians tried shoving a 75mm into it, but again, no good, too small. The Churchill was a rather narrow tank and could not fit a 17pdr turret at all nor the 3inch 20cwt. It could have had a 25pdr howitzer, but it would be priest like with a big ol' turret.
@TheArklyte4 жыл бұрын
@@tisFrancesfault 1)Valentine also wasn't ideal, but it was told to soldier up. You should also consider the turret ring of Matilda and normal Churchill. Space CAN be made with new turret. But new turret ADDS weight. The question is if it was possible to squeeze some from suspension. 2)I mentioned those attempts. They were using "alien" turret as well as one that was simply extended. I however mean completly new one designed for the task. Once again, think of later Churchill turrets, but with less armor thickness ie weight. 3)that's why I talk about changing Churchill at drawing board to have turret ring of Black Prince. It would be wider and heavier, BUT this is long before Churchill started to fatten up with armor. It also means that we wouldn't have to worry about hull cannon as we wouldn't be using 2 pounder in the first place. Unless someone comes up with theidea to coax it with 25 pounder howitzer. Then maybe it'll make some sense. But that's still a mad idea and main point is to get rid of that gun. Both naval AA 3 incher and 25 pounder are big girls, but so is 17 pounder. Even more so in fact. And yet here it is in BP. We can also argue that due to weight constraints when uparmoring, they'd be more inclined to get rid of frontal MG and just slope the armor. As well as add more ammo to main gun. And obviously Meteor will end up on this tank naturally as it'll be in service for several years instead of competing with Centurion.

The machine-gun feed is most likely costs and standardization: sure, you can make parts to feed it from the left but if you're familiar with production (and/or you watch Forgotten Weapons) the biggest cost for a project in terms of cost is *always* tooling. You can spend precious money your country doesn't really have (the uk was bankrupt and propped up on american loans at the end of the war) making specific bits that are only going to be used on a specific prototype/tank.... ...or you can slap a bit of metal on to make feed it from the 'correct' side for a fraction of the cost. This might just be wishful thinking, but I suspect having the box there perhaps makes it easier to change ammo.

The British and the Americans sent huge numbers of war materials to the Soviet Union via Lend-Lease, including tanks airplanes. The Americans sent absolutely huge numbers of food, fuel, and vehicles, even whole truck factories to the Soviet Union via various programs. Radios were a very common item to be sent by the Brits to the Soviets.

@The_Cheiftain or anyone who can reach him. I'd like to see a video about tanker head gear of WW2. Was looking at some photos of Soviet tankers with their padded ones & I know he's gone off on berets but seems like in addition to Oh my god the tank is on fire a bit about Oh my god this terrain is rough or I'm just trying to do my job here but banged my head & got myself a concussion would be fun. Well maybe fun isn't the word I'm looking for but you get my drift right?

I really like the "Black Prince" and personally believe it is what the "Churchill" should have been to start with. That said 20/20 hindsight is no basis for academic critical engagement.
@DornishVintage4 жыл бұрын
It's just that by the time the Churchill was designed, nobody ever thought you would need to fit a 17pdr inside a tank.
@gordonlawrence14484 жыл бұрын
@@DornishVintage That was a failure of thinking or possibly espionage. I would think it should have been obvious that no matter what tanks you are facing now, they will be improved rapidly during war. EG the Panzer III going from 15mm of armour to 30mm in less than a year, The 37mm was upgraded to 50mm too.
@Max-hb9yu4 жыл бұрын
Gordon Lawrence I’m pretty sure the panzer 3 was originally meant to use the 50mm gun but the gun wasn’t ready until after the fall of France.

This is a prototype. Protruding bolts and metal parts inside the Churchill caused many injuries and British tankers also lacked the helmets worn by US tank crew. Is this vehicle as bad.
