Inside the new glowing Air Wick mist diffuser

A new variant on the Air Wick mist diffuser, that glows brightly as it mists out aroma.
The aroma is based on a very refined low-toxicity oil based carrier (isoparaffin) with highly concentrated aroma chemicals that are either synthesised or refined from natural plant oils. The oil travels up a wick and is atomised into a fine mist by an ultrasonic disk. The mist imparts a strong aroma into the air despite using only a tiny amount of the oil.
While experimenting, I diluted a blend of essential oils with low odour white spirit, and had good aroma results. This was purely experimental, and is not recommended. Even though the quantity atomised is very small, it is still a fine haze of oil in the air.
The circuitry is very similar to the previous version, with a crystal controlled microcontroller or dedicated chip. It allows the setting of various aroma strengths by determining the run time on each aroma time cycle. When turned on it runs for 8 hours and then sleeps for 16 hours to save liquid.
The circuitry uses a boost circuit to create 12V for the atomiser circuit, and interestingly, the control chip is initially powered from the battery directly, but gets powered from the boost circuit while it is active. Possibly to avoid instability due to the battery voltage dropping under load.
The LED placement, reflector and ribbed diffuser gives a strong visual effect.
Note that the oil bottles have a child proof cap on them. To remove the cap you have to press down on it hard while rotating it. Those with a delicate grip strength may need to ask for the assistance of a fried with a harder grip to assist in the initial opening.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:- www.bigclive.c...
This also keeps the channel independent of KZbin's algorithm quirks, allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

Isoparaffin is a petroleum-based product that gained popularity originally as a laxative. It's specifically quite low in the carbon chain length, at 13-14 carbons. If you're familiar with petrochemistry you'll notice this is just above petrol (gas) (C4-12). Indeed isoparaffin is considered a high quality fuel for certain motors. What's interesting is that these products *used* to come from crude oil distillation (fractionating column diagrams are a simple way of looking at it). But now as we adapt to the need for a circular economy, we're getting these light hydrocarbons from a lot of other sources. Tyres and other sources of rubber, old cars... lots of fun stuff. That we're all rubbing on our faces and sniffing with delight.

I put a mechanical heat recovery system in our house. I think it's much more effective at keeping the air fresh than all these air freshening devices. It saves on heating too. But not all houses can be easily retrofitted, as the vent pipes can take up space you don't have. Still like Clive's reviews of air fresheners though.

I did not try to reverse engineer the PCB myself, but something in the schematic seems off. The SI2301 (A1SHB) is a P channel MOSFET. Sure, it can conduct in both directions when turned on, but due to the internal parasitic body diode, you would have no way to turn it off if used like shown in your schematic. EDIT: The only purpose of the MOSFET seems to be to stop the zener regulated supply from backfeeding into the battery and avoiding the voltage drop of a diode between the battery and the MCU, but NOT to disconnect the battery supply. So, the circuit makes sense, but has a different purpose.

The diode orientation is effectively blocking the 5V supply from back feeding to the batteries.

How do you know that these individuals didn’t do that? They have the engineering degrees, occupational experience and they’re in appliance design. It’s likely they would have either directly and/or indirectly worked on more conventional appliances such as a timer, microwave or coffee maker. merely one appliance designed, built and shipped to a customer that functions as intended for a good length of time in my opinion metaphorically and literally exceeds the amount of work some people may have done in their lifetime. This outweighs everything else.

In fact, I shall be getting one of these as soon as I see them on the supermarket shelves. Lets hope that they continue to make the refills! On the matter of refills, I wish to point out that if one decides to make one's own, it is essential not to use hydrocarbons as a base fluid. So stopped working.. I still believe there is probably protection circuits to stop the main unit getting damaged, but I can't hold the thing steady enough to get the meter in there... Anyway take it easy up in Edinburgh. I took a Glade air freshener and removed the PCB that only allowed 9,18,36 min sprays and replaced it with a ESP32C3 micro-controller a MX1508 motor controller and a 3.3 vdc regulator board. Flashed the micro-controller with ESPHome which allowed me to controller the MX-1508 motor controller to have it spray when i want it to. ESPHome allows me to integrate it with Home Assistant a home automation program and with the aid of mmWave sensor can now have it spray only when i'm in the room and when i enter a room, etc.

I wonder whether the SENSE line is used to estimate the phase difference between the current going through the piezo and the voltage used to drive it? From that phase difference it is possible to find the resonant frequencies of the system (which will be slightly different for every bottle, because of small changes in the mass loading on the diaphragm).

The sense resistor is used to detect the rate of change of current going through the inductor. The idea is, at magnetic saturation, the current through the inductor no longer increases with time and instead of just burning power as heat, this signals that it is time to switch the mosfet off. Self oscillating flyback drivers use exactly the same method to drive the core to magnetic saturation, this ensures maximum energy storage hence maximum output voltage without wasting energy as heat.

As always fascinating. The unsung engineers/designers who make unusual circuits out of common parts always impresses me. What I would like to add is that oil based air fresheners are dangerous for certain pets, birds especially. Something about atomized oil getting into their lungs is very bad for their health. Not sure about the science around it but bird experts do advise against oil based atomizers. There’s some evidence that cats don’t respond well to certain air freshener ingredients so it’s better to avoid with cats in the house. Dogs seem impervious but I don’t know for sure. Recently I had a stay at a motel where the built in oil based air freshener was out of control and filling the air with a sickly-to-me berry odor. No other rooms were available. The staff (one person) was unable to disable it and I was unwilling to climb to ceiling and disassemble it. Remembering the many ionizer disassemblies Big Clive has done, I got the car ionizer (rental cars can be odorous) and set it up in the room. Berry odor defeated in less than an hour and the rest of my stay!

I don't know what this mcu is, but it's not that sophisticated if it doesn't even have an internal RC oscillator and has to use a 32kHz external crystal. Granted, the RC oscillator is not that accurate and drifts with temperature and voltage, but since the mcu is not communicating with anything, precise timing is not really required.

I just jump the back fence and grab some Eucalyptus leaves, or Wattle. Theres Old English Lavender in the neighbors garden, but 5 miles away. Clive, not sure if you missed something, that circuit won't work as described.

That doesn't have a label on it that says, "May cause cancer on lab rats in California, USA" does it? or "Not legal in California, USA, pursuant to air pollution index laws?" Just asking?

It DEFINITELY does not like being knocked into a sink full of really hot water, I’ll tell ya that. Edit: my bad. Mine was the first model. Perhaps this one enjoys a good spa day. I doubt it though

Weve tried these and justcthink they are a gimmick.. The vapourised mix of oil is heavier than air and although breifly is ejected upwards it dosent disapate above but sinks down and over time makes the surrounding area sticky...

I still think items like these need to be used for practical jokes with unpleasant odour dispersal (other than the ones the manufacturers offer!) in places they can't be seen or gotten to... :P

If it's spraying out vaporised oil, don't let it ANYWHERE NEAR a projector! Fog machines (as used at raves, nightclubs, discos and similar places where beautiful young things go to get laid, drop pills and / or boogie all night) were the bane of my life when I fixed digital projectors for a living. The oil gets sucked inside, coats the optical and cooling systems and requires a major dismantling job to clean out. Things that diffuse oil must be kept WELL AWAY from projection systems or you'll be in for a VERY expensive repair job!

@@bigclivedotcom Have you ever had a look at the Dyson stick vacs? Or a water flosser? I've got one. Very cheap on eBay. I suspect the pump they use to squirt the water out is similar to ones you've looked at in the foam pumps. Just a lot faster/stronger.
