I’m a lifelong resident of Indiana. I can remember fellow late 1980’s High School kids, getting so excited about spring break at Myrtle Beach. It was a big deal to pack up a car with friends, ditch the parents, travel hundreds of miles, and stay a week at a place bubbling with kids from other states. Hanging out at the beach, taking in the colorful attractions, and getting t-shirts to prove you went somewhere like an adult! Girls would come back with great tans and the faint scent of moisturizers, to keep from peeling. I was a little envious of the adventures they had, but imagine I stayed out of a lot of trouble. Lots of stories of underage drinking and hookups with people you’d never see again. I’m 53 now, and appreciate getting to see what I missed! Thanks Adam!🙂

Yes, it was a haven for teenage trouble. I'm in NC and Myrtle Beach was the place to go to celebrate graduation. Interesting that the excitement was with teens elsewhere.
@AdventureswithRoger3 жыл бұрын
It was somewhat of a status symbol, to have been to Myrtle Beach on spring break! People that had went were visibly more tan than everyone else, had a T-shirt from one of the shops, and would grin at each other like they were part of an exclusive club! Like Vegas for teenagers.

As a long time resident of SC, I’ve never understood people’s fascination with Myrtle Beach. People travel from all over the country to go to Myrtle Beach, but it is by far the worst beach to visit in SC. There are so many more beautiful beaches in the state like Wild Dunes in Charleston, Hilton Head, Kiawah Island, or even Tybee Island in Georgia. A one time visit to Myrtle is more than enough.
@leighnewman61603 жыл бұрын
I’m 51 and have lived in SC my whole life. I grew up going to MB. I think it’s just a nostalgia thing for me. We typically stay in Litchfield, and we go to HHI more, but MB has its own charm. We’re going in a couple weeks for the weekend to just eat some good seafood, stroll Broadway, and visit the outlets. No, it’s not a great beach, and I can’t imagine traveling from outside of the state to get there, we’re less than 2 hours away, but for me it will always hold a special place.

It was great growing up in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. I stopped going when they tore down the iconic Pavillion. They ruined it.
@TheBioExplorer3 жыл бұрын
I worked one summer of my college years at the old Pavillion amusement park that anchored Ocean Boulevard for generations. It was a crazy summer. We would work until midnight and then still have 3-4 hours we could hit Dixie Electric nightclub or one of the others. We then walked the beach towards a really cheap, falling down... hotel on the south end of Ocean Boulevard where my roommates and I shared a small efficiency for the summer. They truly ruined Myrtle Beach when they turned the Pavillion into just a shopping area. These days when I visit I stick to North Myrtle Beach which is by far nicer with less crime.
@Karen-jp1ns3 жыл бұрын
Those were the days! Yes, they ruined their own brand by tearing down the Pavillion! It's too depressing to visit now.
@TheBioExplorer3 жыл бұрын
Yep... they made the BEST cheeseburgers & corn dogs (Pronto pups) at the Pavillion. I managed one of the food stands and one day the old gentleman that started the place came in with the guys running food service and taught us how to make the perfect "Pronto pups" these corn dogs had to have a special batter at just the right consistency so that when you pulled them out the batter they had a little curly tail on the end which stayed in place even in the deep fryer.

We lived there from 2004 to 2017. It was at it's peak then. The Palace Theater at Broadway-at-the-Beach was torn down. That's where the Broadway name came from. They had Broadway-style shows there. Planet Hollywood gone, a huge Hard Rock Cafe inside an Egyptian pyramid now a Dave & Busters. There was an I-Max theater, Magi-Quest, a huge Dragon's Lair golf attraction with a dragon that talked & spit fire, etc. Lots of other attractions bit the dust. Broadway-at-the Beach has become more & more carny looking. It was more like Downtown Disney & Pleasure Island back in the day.

This is probably the only time Ocean Avenue has no people except for a few people with a hardy soul that can stand the wind. Broadway at the beach is a tourist "trap" destination for one and all.
